Bocas del Toro in February: Weather, Surf and Where to Stay
February is one of the driest months of the year in Bocas del Toro, and a good one for a first trip. Here is what to expect, what to do and how to choose a room if you are planning a stay at Casa Cayuco.

If you are reading this in November, February is about three months away, which is the right time to look at rooms. The weather information below comes from Casa Cayuco’s own FAQ; we have not stayed at the lodge ourselves yet — we researched it in depth before partnering with it — and weather is never guaranteed.
Bocas del Toro in February is generally dry, warm (about 27 °C / 82 °F) and good for beach, snorkel and jungle days, with surf swell still active. The lodge lists February as one of the driest months. Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos is a strong base, and our link gives 4% off with the code HungryTravelPanama; keep it in the promo box. February weather in Bocas del Toro
According to the lodge, February to April is generally the drier season on Panama’s Caribbean coast, and February and March are the very driest months. The temperature averages about 27 °C (82 °F), as it does all year. Rain, when it comes, usually falls at night and clears by late morning. The biggest surf swell runs from November to April, so February still brings waves, while the calmest sea for swimming and snorkelling is August to October. The protected snorkel spots work year-round.

For the rest of the year, see our month-by-month guide.
What February is good for
- Beach and swimming: the beach at Casa Cayuco is calm and swimmable all year, with free kayaks, SUP boards and snorkel gear.
- Snorkelling: Isla Zapatillas (half day, $80) and the mangroves ($85), with guided trips. Prices are as listed by the lodge in November 2026.
- Surfing: the lodge offers a half-day surf trip ($75) to less-known breaks in the marine park, for strong swimmers and confident surfers only, with a two-person minimum. See our surf guide.
- Jungle: trails for sloths, monkeys and red poison dart frogs.
- Culture: the included Salt Creek tour.
Is February busy?
As one of the driest months, February is attractive to many travellers, and Casa Cayuco has only 53 beds. We would book soon. We have no occupancy data, so ask the lodge or check live rates for your dates through our link. Remember the minimum is three nights and that early-in-the-year dates may be popular with groups.
In 2027, the new guest lounge and the two new bungalows, Starfish and Cangrejo, will be ready (from 15 December 2026), giving more choice than the lodge had before its reopening.

In February, nights are warm and the breeze is useful, so most open-air rooms with fans are comfortable. If you are sensitive to heat, the villa’s air-conditioned bedrooms are the exception.
Planning your February trip
Fly Panama City (Albrook) to Bocas del Toro with Air Panama, about 50 minutes. Flight 980 arrives around 2:00 pm and matches the lodge’s boat; Flight 981 leaves Bocas around 2:30 pm. If you need extra nights in Panama City, the lodge recommends American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo (mention Casa Cayuco for special rates). Our getting-there guide covers every route.

For a longer trip combining Bocas with other regions, see our itinerary ideas in first-trip planning guide.

A five-night February plan
Here is how we would use five nights at the lodge in the dry season, built only from what the lodge offers:
- Night 1 (arrival): boat from the airport, check-in at 3:00 pm, a swim off the dock and dinner at the communal table.
- Day 2: morning kayak or SUP on the calm beach, the included Salt Creek tour in the afternoon.
- Day 3: Isla Zapatillas half-day trip with beaches and guided snorkelling.
- Day 4: jungle morning (Casa Cayuco Sendero, 2 hours, $25), then rest, a massage or yoga.
- Day 5: mangrove snorkelling or Sloth Creek, and a farewell dinner on the dock.
- Departure: breakfast, then the boat leaves around 12:30 pm.
Surfers can swap one day for the surf trip, which needs two people. Because everything is planned at check-in, you can adjust the plan to the weather and to how everyone feels.
February vs January and March
January is still in the rainier stretch (November to January), though it has good surf; we describe it in our January guide. March is, like February, among the driest months, and the swell is still present until April. If you have flexible dates, February and March are equally strong bets for weather. February may have a holiday effect: Panama celebrates Carnival around February or March, with dates changing each year, so check the calendar if you are combining Bocas with Panama City, where festivities and travel demand can be higher. Book flights early in that week.
For travellers who care most about calm water for children, August to October is better, but for a family on school holiday dates in early 2027, February is a solid compromise.
What to pack for February
Light, quick-dry clothing, a light rain jacket for the odd shower, reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent for dusk and dawn, a headlamp, trail or water shoes and a swimsuit or two. Bring cash for crafts in Salt Creek and chocolate at the farm, because Panama uses US dollars and the lodge suggests having some cash on hand. Electricity at the lodge is solar-powered and available 24/7 with US-style Type A outlets, so a plug adapter may be needed if you come from Europe, and the lodge asks guests not to use hair dryers. Pack medication, a small first-aid kit and a dry bag for boat days, and ask your doctor about vaccinations such as Hepatitis A and B, which the lodge describes as good to have but not required. Our packing guide has the full list.
Who February is not right for
We would rather you book the right trip than the wrong one, so here is who Casa Cayuco does not suit:
- Families with children under 5. The lodge does not accept guests under five, because of the remote location and safety.
- Anyone who needs air conditioning in the bedroom. Only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan.
- Travellers who want nightlife. Bocas Town is 30–35 minutes away by boat, and there is one scheduled boat a day.
- Short stays. The minimum is three nights, and honestly four or five is better.
- Anyone who wants flat, glassy water. February still has swell; the calmest sea is August to October.
What is included
All meals and an afternoon snack, the scheduled round-trip boat from Bocas Town, a Salt Creek village tour, and kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats. Taxes, drinks, tips and excursions are extra. We explain more in our price guide.
How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount
Casa Cayuco does not publish nightly rates, so the booking page is where you see live prices for your dates. This is how to get our 4% off:
- Open our booking link — any button or room name on this page goes to Casa Cayuco’s own Cloudbeds booking engine.
- Check that HungryTravelPanama is in the promo box before you search dates. Our link pre-fills it; if the box is empty, type the code in exactly as written.
- Choose your dates (3 nights minimum) and your room. Search for dates in February 2027. Check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out 12:30 pm, and the daily boat from Bocas Town is built around those times.
- Confirm with the 50% deposit (card or bank transfer). Cancelling more than 60 days before check-in refunds the deposit minus a $100 admin fee; 45–60 days forfeits half the deposit; under 45 days forfeits all of it. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.
We are Casa Cayuco’s partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code, at no extra cost to you. Because bookings are tracked only by the code, please do not skip step two.
