Solo Travel in Bocas del Toro: Where to Stay on Your Own
Travelling alone to the Caribbean coast of Panama is easy to do and easy to get wrong. The island you sleep on decides whether you meet people or sit by yourself. Here is how we would choose, and why a communal-table eco lodge is a strong option.

Solo travel is a great way to see Panama, but the first night matters. Arrive somewhere with no social heart and you can spend a quiet evening wondering why you came. Arrive somewhere with a shared table and a boat full of other guests, and you have people to talk to before you unpack. We have not stayed at Casa Cayuco ourselves yet — we researched it in depth before partnering with it — so this guide relies on the lodge’s own descriptions and our view of how solo travellers could use them.
For solo travel in Bocas del Toro, the best place to stay is somewhere with shared meals, included activities and a short, easy way in. Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos fits: communal tables for every meal, an included boat transfer from Bocas Town, free kayaks and snorkel gear, and 24/7 staff. What solo travellers should look for
Over many trips, we have come to judge a solo-friendly stay on five things:
- Shared meals. Communal tables turn dinner into conversation.
- Included activities. If paddling and snorkelling are free, you are not forced to spend money to fill the day.
- A simple arrival. A scheduled transfer you do not have to organise yourself.
- A sense of safety. Staff around, and a close-knit community.
- A flexible room. A room that suits one person without feeling empty.
Most Bocas Town hostels and guesthouses are social but noisy; remote lodges are quiet but can be lonely if everything is booked separately. A lodge with communal dining and included gear sits between the two.
Two more things are worth thinking about before you go. First, timing: the generally drier months in Bocas del Toro are February to April and August to October, with the calmest sea in August to October, while November to January is rainier. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and the temperature stays near 27 °C (82 °F) all year, so a solo trip never needs heavy packing. Second, cash and tips: Panama uses US dollars, the lodge accepts cash, bank transfer or credit card, and gratuities for staff are recommended at 12–15% of the stay. Our packing guide has the rest of the list.
Bocas Town or an island lodge?
Bocas Town on Isla Colón is where the airport, shops, restaurants and bars are. It is the easy choice for a night or two if you want to meet people over drinks. An island lodge such as Casa Cayuco, 30–35 minutes away by speedboat, offers nature, a beach and guided excursions, but you will spend your evenings at the lodge rather than out in town. Many solo travellers do both: a night in Bocas Town on the way, then three to five nights at the lodge. Our Bocas Town vs Bastimentos guide compares the two bases in detail.

Why the communal table matters
At Casa Cayuco, breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at communal tables, and the afternoon snack is brought to wherever you are. There is also a large table on the dock for dinners under the stars, where sting rays glide past. A shared table is the quickest way to meet other travellers without any effort: you sit down and conversation follows.

If you would rather eat alone at times, nobody stops you from taking the afternoon snack to a hammock or reading in the guest library. The food is predominantly plant-based plus fresh fish, with allergies and diets accommodated (tell the lodge in advance, as the kitchen uses nuts and gluten).
Activities you can do alone or with others
Included in every stay are sea kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear, yoga mats and a guided tour of Salt Creek village, a Ngäbe-Buglé community of about 900 people five minutes away by boat. Guided excursions cost extra and are planned at check-in: Isla Zapatillas (half day, $80 per person), mangrove snorkelling ($85), the chocolate farm tour ($70), Monkey Island ($70), Sloth Creek ($40) and several jungle trails ($25–45). Those are the lodge’s prices as listed in November 2026 and they may change. A few have minimum group sizes (surfing needs two people and Nidori Beach three), which is another reason shared stays suit solo travellers: you can join forces with other guests.
Birders and wildlife watchers will like the free jungle trail and guided birding; see our guide to sloths in Bocas del Toro.

Is Casa Cayuco safe for someone on their own?
The lodge says it has no safety concerns: it is remote, in a close-knit community, with night watchmen who mainly keep the boats moored. Staff are on site 24/7. We cannot promise anything, and every traveller should use ordinary judgement, travel insurance and a doctor’s advice for health questions. On health, the lodge says malaria and Zika are not a concern in the region and recommends Hepatitis A and B vaccinations as good to have but not required; please check with a doctor.
For getting around, you will be with the lodge’s boat for transfers, so there is little to navigate alone. Our getting-there guide covers the route.
Which room for one person
Casa Cayuco does not publish a separate solo rate here, so ask the lodge or check live rates for your dates. Rooms that suit one traveller well:
- Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama: canopy and sea views, queen bed, in the main lodge near the dining area and the people.
- Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama: the smallest and most unique cabin, thatched roof, wraparound porch.
- Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama: fully screened, in the main lodge.
All have en-suite open-air bathrooms, a ceiling fan and a mosquito net. Only the villa has air conditioning, and it is too large for one person.
A simple solo itinerary
Fly Panama City to Bocas del Toro on Air Panama (about 50 minutes, Flight 980 lands around 2:00 pm), take the lodge’s boat from the airport and settle in for dinner. Spend day two on the kayaks and the Salt Creek tour, day three on a Zapatillas snorkel trip, day four on a jungle trail or a chocolate farm morning, and day five resting and reading. Leave the next day around 12:30 pm for Flight 981 home. Our how many nights guide suggests how many nights to allow.
Who this is not for
We would rather you book the right trip than the wrong one, so here is who Casa Cayuco does not suit:
- Families with children under 5. The lodge does not accept guests under five, because of the remote location and safety.
- Anyone who needs air conditioning in the bedroom. Only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan.
- Travellers who want nightlife. Bocas Town is 30–35 minutes away by boat, and there is one scheduled boat a day.
- Short stays. The minimum is three nights, and honestly four or five is better.
- Solo travellers who want a party hostel scene. This is a quiet jungle-and-sea lodge, not a social bar crawl.
How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount
Casa Cayuco does not publish nightly rates, so the booking page is where you see live prices for your dates. This is how to get our 4% off:
- Open our booking link — any button or room name on this page goes to Casa Cayuco’s own Cloudbeds booking engine.
- Check that HungryTravelPanama is in the promo box before you search dates. Our link pre-fills it; if the box is empty, type the code in exactly as written.
- Choose your dates (3 nights minimum) and a room for one. Enter one adult in the search. Check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out 12:30 pm, and the daily boat from Bocas Town is built around those times.
- Confirm with the 50% deposit (card or bank transfer). Cancelling more than 60 days before check-in refunds the deposit minus a $100 admin fee; 45–60 days forfeits half the deposit; under 45 days forfeits all of it. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.
We are Casa Cayuco’s partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code, at no extra cost to you. Because bookings are tracked only by the code, please do not skip step two.
