Finding an automatic campervan Denmark rental is not impossible, but it is the sort of thing that is easiest to sort out early. Manual gearboxes remain the default for European rental fleets, so automatic vans are a smaller slice of the choice and tend to disappear first when the season fills up.

We have driven a lot of Nordic road, and we know how stressful a surprise manual can feel after a long flight. This guide covers what we can say with confidence, what to check in each offer rather than assume, and how to protect yourself at pick-up. Where the facts depend on the rental company, we say so.

For everything else about the trip itself, our first-timer guide to renting a campervan in Denmark is the companion read.

Short Answer

Automatic campervans exist in Denmark but are less common than manual, so book early, filter for automatic in the search and confirm the transmission in the offer before paying. Expect the choice to be narrower and the price often higher than for a similar manual van. If you can drive a manual, a small manual camper is usually the cheapest route. Our reader code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout.

Why automatic is the harder option in Denmark

Across Europe, most campervans and motorhomes are rented with a manual gearbox, and Denmark is no exception. The page we checked for the Denmark fleet describes the entry-level Budget Camper as a 2-berth, manual, diesel van, small and easy to park. It does not give a transmission for every other vehicle type, which is exactly why we tell people to confirm it offer by offer.

The practical effect is simple: fewer automatic vans, concentrated with some rental companies and some depots. If you need one, you cannot treat the transmission as an afterthought. Pick your dates, run the search, and look at what the offer actually states before you fall for a photo of a lovely van.

What the four Danish van types mean for you

CampervanPlanet lists four types in Denmark: Budget Camper, Comfort Camper, Low-Profile Motorhome and Family Motorhome. They differ in size and kit more than in drivetrain. The Budget Camper is small and cheap on diesel. The Comfort Camper adds space and a kitchen. The Low-Profile Motorhome brings a shower and heating, and the Family Motorhome sleeps four to six with a full kitchen and bathroom.

Our advice: choose the size first, then filter by transmission, not the other way round. If automatic leaves you with only larger motorhomes, check the total weight and the licence rules before you pay. The search on CampervanPlanet shows live prices by date, so you can see how the choice narrows.

How big is the automatic price premium?

We are not going to put a figure on it, because we did not see a fixed number and the answer depends on dates and company. What we can say from experience is that automatic vans often cost more than comparable manuals, partly because supply is tighter and partly because the vehicles tend to be newer.

The way to know is to compare. Run the same dates twice and note the difference, then decide whether the convenience is worth it for your trip. For many drivers who are used to automatics, it absolutely is: a van is large and unfamiliar, and removing the gearbox from the learning curve is a safety benefit as much as a comfort one. Our breakdown of what campervan rental in Denmark costs shows how the premium sits among the other costs.

Booking an automatic campervan Denmark rental early

Because supply is small, we would book an automatic campervan Denmark rental as soon as your dates are firm, and for June to August as far ahead as you can. Summer is the priciest, most crowded time, with Sankt Hans on 23 June and school holidays filling the coastal campsites. May and September are our favourite months for value, but vans do not stay free there either.

If your dates are flexible, shift them by a day or two and try another pick-up city. CampervanPlanet lists six: Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Billund, Aalborg and Aabenraa. An automatic that is unavailable in Copenhagen may well be listed in Billund or Aarhus.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. We compare Denmark campervans across 160+ rental companies on CampervanPlanet — and code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off your booking.

Licence and weight: the check that matters more

Two licence points catch people out. First, if you passed your test in an automatic, your licence may be restricted to automatic vehicles, so a manual van is not an option at all. Second, a bigger motorhome can come close to the limit of an ordinary car licence. In most of Europe that is category B up to 3.5 tonnes, but rental companies set their own rules, so read the licence and weight section of the offer.

The rental company holds a refundable security deposit on the main driver’s card, and many offers take 10 to 20% online with the remainder at pick-up. Our first-timer guide goes through both in detail. Do these checks before you pay, not at the depot.

Confirm it, then confirm it again at pick-up

Even after you book, confirm. Check your voucher for the vehicle description and transmission, and keep a copy. At pick-up, ask the agent to show you the gearbox on the van you are handed, then take a few minutes in the car park to get used to the controls, the mirrors and the size before you drive off.

If the van is not what you booked, say so before you sign. It is far easier to sort out at the depot than three days into the trip. Also check that the rental includes what you expect, since each offer lists what the price covers and what is paid locally.

Manual or automatic: how we would decide

Be honest about your own driving. If you can drive a manual comfortably, a small manual camper is usually the simplest and cheapest way to see Denmark, and the Budget Camper type is described as small, easy on diesel and quick to park. The country is forgiving: flat roads, short distances and gentle traffic outside Copenhagen.

If you rarely or never drive a manual, do not take the risk to save a little. A campervan is wide, tall and heavy, and you will also be navigating unfamiliar signs, bridges and campsite lanes. Paying a premium for an automatic is a small price for a calm first day. A good test is to ask yourself how you would feel parking in a tight campsite loop with a queue behind you.

The middle path is to compare both. Search the same dates for manual and automatic, note the difference and decide with real numbers. We would rather you book the van you can drive happily than the cheapest one on the list.

Driving an automatic campervan in Denmark

Once you are on the road it is the easy kind of driving. Denmark is flat, and the routes on CampervanPlanet are rated easy and two-wheel-drive friendly. Dipped headlights are required day and night, so switch them on before you set off and leave them on. The Great Belt Bridge costs about DKK 250 (roughly €34) each way for a car or small camper, and more for larger motorhomes, while the Little Belt bridge is free.

Wild camping is banned, so book licensed campsites or autocamperplads aires. When you are ready, compare automatic campervans for your dates and enter code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 to take €20 off. For the wider picture, see our campervan rental guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are there automatic campervans in Denmark?

Yes, but fewer than manuals. Rental fleets in Europe are mostly manual, so check the transmission stated in each offer and book early, especially for June to August.

Are automatic campervans more expensive in Denmark?

Often, yes, because supply is tighter and the vans tend to be newer. Compare the same dates for automatic and manual to see the exact difference for your trip.

Which pick-up cities should I try for an automatic?

CampervanPlanet lists Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Billund, Aalborg and Aabenraa. If your first choice has nothing, try another city or shift your dates by a day or two.

Can I drive a campervan in Denmark on an automatic-only licence?

An automatic-only licence usually restricts you to automatic vehicles, so choose an automatic van and confirm the licence and weight rules in the offer before paying.

Is there a discount code for CampervanPlanet?

Yes. Enter code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 at checkout on CampervanPlanet to take €20 off your booking. It is a fixed amount in euros.

How early should I book an automatic campervan in Denmark?

As soon as your dates are firm, and several months ahead for summer. The choice is smaller than for manual vans, so the good ones go first.
