Which Lapland Proposal Is Right for You? A Decision Guide to Our Ten Signature Proposals

Ten proposals can feel like too many choices. We run Rovaniemi Weddings, our own company, and we have watched hundreds of couples-to-be narrow it down in the same few questions. Answer them in order and you will usually land on one or two options in five minutes.

Short answer

Pick your Lapland proposal by working through four questions: when you travel, how much you want to spend, how private or public the moment should feel, and what your partner loves. In winter the classics are On the Frozen Lake (from €1,400) and A Promise in the Ice Chapel (from €1,800); all year, The Fireside Proposal (from €1,400) and The Path to Yes (from €1,500) work in any month; for the aurora, Yes Under the Aurora (from €1,500) runs late August to April. On a small budget, Right Where You Are starts at €650. All ten live on our Proposals in Lapland page, and every price includes planning, set-up and removal.

Start With the Calendar: What Your Travel Dates Allow

Dates remove more options than any other question. Two proposals are strictly winter: On the Frozen Lake needs the ice to be thick and safe, so it runs December to March, and A Promise in the Ice Chapel is bookable from mid-December until the end of March, because the chapel is rebuilt every winter and melts every spring. Yes Under the Aurora needs darkness, which means late August to April. Everything else — the fireside setting, the surprise walk, the photoshoot, décor at your accommodation, the room surprise, the dome dinner and the grand design — works in every season.

If you arrive in summer, the midnight sun gives soft light well past midnight and the lakeshore setting becomes lovely in a different way. If you arrive in September, you may get autumn colour and the first lights at once. Our post on the best time to propose in Rovaniemi, month by month has the longer version.

Question 1: How Private Should the Moment Feel?

Some people want an audience and many do not. Almost everything we plan is on private land or in a private space, which is the whole point: no tourists walking through the frame, no queue, no guessing who is watching. The most private options are the lake, the fireside spot, the aurora tour for two, the dome dinner and anything at your own cabin. If your partner hates attention, favour those. If they would love a visible, joyful surprise — a heart of flowers visible from far away — The Grand Romance is made for that.

A middle path is The Path to Yes and the Surprise Proposal Photoshoot: the photographer is present, but it feels like a walk or a couple shoot, so the setting stays calm. Our post on private versus public proposal spots in Rovaniemi goes deeper.

Question 2: What Is Your Budget?

Prices run from €650 to €2,700, and the right choice is rarely the most expensive. If you have around €650–€700, a styled setting at your accommodation — Right Where You Are — or a rose-petal room surprise like A Thousand Petals still gives you a planned, beautiful proposal; add a photographer if you can, because that is the add-on we would choose first. From roughly €1,050 to €1,500 you move into fully photographed outdoor proposals. From €1,800 you have the Ice Chapel, and €2,700 buys the largest design we make.

Question 3: What Does Your Partner Love?

This is the question that matters most, and the one we ask first when you write to us. A short guide:

Question 4: How Does the Trip Fit Around It?

Think about where the moment sits in your itinerary. On a three-day trip we usually put the proposal on the second evening, so arrival is calm, the schedule is not rushed and there is a spare evening if the weather misbehaves. Our three-day Rovaniemi trip with a proposal post shows how. For a longer stay, see the five-day version.

Also consider transport. Yes Under the Aurora and The Path to Yes include all transport; the dome dinner includes transfers within 10 km of the city centre; the lake, the chapel and the fireside spot list private transport as an add-on. If you are staying in the centre without a car, tell us and we will plan the logistics. And keep the secret: we only talk to you, on the channel you choose, and never contact your partner.

Three Real-World Examples of How the Choice Plays Out

These are illustrations of the thinking, not client stories. Someone travelling in January with a partner who loves winter photography will often land on On the Frozen Lake for a blue-hour moment, with the Ice Chapel as the alternative if they prefer a candle-lit interior. Someone visiting in October for a long weekend, with a partner who is not keen on the cold, will lean towards Dinner in the Glass Dome or a styled evening at their cabin. Someone on a summer holiday under the midnight sun will usually choose between the fireside setting and a surprise walk, because those are the settings where the light does the work.

If two options tie, we are happy to talk through the difference, and if neither fits we can design a custom proposal from scratch around your story and budget.

Common Mistakes When Choosing

After years of listening to people describe what they have in mind, a few patterns come up again and again. Choosing for the photo rather than the person. A frozen lake is spectacular, but if your partner dislikes being outside in the cold, a dome dinner or a cabin setting will look better in the album because they will be smiling. Over-relying on the aurora. It is wonderful when it appears, and it needs a clear sky, so we always build in a second evening or a plan that still works without it. Leaving it too late. The Ice Chapel, the lake and aurora evenings are limited and December fills quickly. Forgetting the cold’s effect on the ring and the flowers. Our bouquets are made of high-quality artificial and preserved flowers because fresh petals freeze at −30 °C, and we keep the ring warm until the last moment. Planning the proposal but not the hour after it. Think about where you will warm up, eat and call your families; most of our options include a toast, a fire or a nearby restaurant to make this easy.

None of these is a disaster, and all of them are easy to avoid if you tell us your story early. That is the main thing a planner does: ask the unglamorous questions before the romantic moment.

If You Are Still Torn: Our Shortlist by Type of Couple

When someone writes “I just cannot decide”, this is the shortlist we reach for. The nature lovers: The Fireside Proposal, because it works in every season and a reindeer to feed in winter is a small delight. The romantics who love a story: A Promise in the Ice Chapel for winter, where the chapel is carved by hand every year and exists for one season only. The adventurous: The Path to Yes, where your “guide” is a photographer and the trail leads to a prepared spot in Riisitunturi National Park or the Korouma canyon. The couples who are happy in a restaurant: Dinner in the Glass Dome, where you have a private three-course dinner and the décor waits inside or outside the dome. The couples with a tight schedule: Right Where You Are, because it needs no transport at all.

If you want to see these side by side, our post comparing the Ice Chapel, the frozen lake and the snow hotel goes into detail on the three winter classics.

How to Book: Four Steps

  1. Tell us the story — how you met, what they love, how you want it to feel — through the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page. Weeks before is ideal.
  2. Receive an option and a quote within a few days, with nothing hidden and your date held.
  3. Quiet preparation — flowers, candles, photographer, transport, sparkling wine and the weather plan confirmed.
  4. The moment — we set up while you are on your way and step out of sight; you walk them in; the yes happens; we capture it, then quietly pack down.

We reply within one business day. See all ten on the Proposals in Lapland page.

FAQ

Which proposal is the most popular?

The four we are asked about most are Yes Under the Aurora, On the Frozen Lake, The Fireside Proposal and A Promise in the Ice Chapel, which start between €1,400 and €1,800.

What is the cheapest option?

Right Where You Are starts at €650 and A Thousand Petals at €700. Both can be extended with a photographer.

Do all proposals include a photographer?

Nearly all do, as a professional who captures the moment and takes couple photos right after the yes. Right Where You Are and A Thousand Petals offer one as an add-on.

Can we change our mind about the option?

Yes, within reason and availability; tell us as early as possible. A custom proposal is also possible.

What if the weather is bad?

In winter there is no rain in Lapland; falling snow is part of the charm, and we can bring clear umbrellas. We also agree a sheltered alternative in advance.

How far ahead should we contact you?

The earlier the better, ideally weeks before, though last-minute proposals are possible if the date is free.

Our Honest Final Word

If we had to compress the guide into a sentence: choose the setting your partner would choose for a perfect evening, then choose the version of it that fits your dates and budget. Everything else is detail that we, as the owners of Rovaniemi Weddings, are happy to carry.

Browse the Proposals in Lapland page, pick the two that feel right, and send them to us; our favourites for a first look are Yes Under the Aurora, On the Frozen Lake and The Fireside Proposal.
