Ice Chapel, Frozen Lake or Snow Hotel? How to Choose Your Winter Proposal Setting in Rovaniemi
Three of the most romantic winter settings near Rovaniemi are all made of ice and snow, and couples regularly ask us which to pick. We run Rovaniemi Weddings, so we plan all three. This is a side-by-side comparison: price, mood, season, photographs, warmth and what to do after the yes.

Choose the Ice Chapel if you want a candle-lit, architectural moment and a hotel to continue the evening in: A Promise in the Ice Chapel (from €1,800, mid-December to March). Choose the frozen lake if you want open sky, snow-covered pines and a fire: On the Frozen Lake (from €1,400, December to March). Choose the snow hotel visit — which is included with the Ice Chapel, because the chapel is part of the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos — if you want an overnight stay in an ice or glass-igloo setting around the question. All three include a professional photographer. Compare all ten on our proposals page.

A Promise in the Ice Chapel
From €1,800 · mid-December to March · private use of the Ice Chapel with a photographer
First, What We Mean by Each of the Three
The words are used loosely, so here are the definitions we use.
The Ice Chapel is a chapel carved by hand from snow and crystal-clear ice at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos in Sinettä, a short drive from Rovaniemi. It is rebuilt every winter and melts every spring. Candlelight glows through the walls, carvings catch the light and reindeer hides warm the benches.
The frozen lake is a wide private lake just outside Rovaniemi, surrounded by snow-covered forest, styled with candles and lanterns on the ice, with a fire and warm drinks on the shore.
The snow hotel is the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos itself: a building made of snow and ice with suites, an Ice Bar and the chapel, plus glass igloos for sleeping under the sky. For a proposal, the hotel and the chapel go together, and entrance to the hotel is included in the chapel option.
Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and we plan each of these in the same way: from the first conversation to the last candle.
The Comparison Table
Prices are from-prices and include planning, coordination, set-up and removal.

| A Promise in the Ice Chapel | On the Frozen Lake | |
|---|---|---|
| From | €1,800 | €1,400 |
| Season | Mid-December to end of March | December to March, whenever the ice is safe |
| Where | Ice Chapel of the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos, Sinettä | Private frozen lake just outside Rovaniemi |
| Feeling | Candle-lit, intimate, architectural | Open, wild, quiet |
| Included | Private use of the chapel, SnowHotel entrance, decoration, 30 roses, toast usually in the Ice Bar, photographer | Private lake and shore, candles and lanterns, fire with warm drinks and cookies, 30 roses, sparkling wine, photographer |
| Add-ons | Grander décor, videographer, private transport, more drinks | Videographer, more flowers or grand design, private transport |
The honest summary: the chapel costs more because of what it is and where, and because it includes the visit to the hotel. The lake is the better value for a bigger, wilder picture. Neither is better than the other; they are different moods.
Mood and Photographs: Which Will Look Like Your Story
This is where couples usually decide.
The Ice Chapel is warm in colour. Candlelight on ice gives gold and blue tones, and the carved walls frame you like a stage. It suits couples who like a sense of occasion — people who have always imagined a quiet ceremony, an altar, an aisle. The photographer works with a space that is symmetrical and close, so pictures are intimate.
The frozen lake is cool in colour and enormous in space. The photographer can step back and put you into a landscape, with the pines on both sides and the sky over you. At blue hour or in the evening, the lanterns on the ice look like stars on the ground. Choose the lake if you and your partner are outdoor people, if you love the sense of nowhere-else, or if you hope for the northern lights above.
If you still cannot decide, ask yourself which sentence sounds more like your partner: ‘I want it to feel like a story’ (chapel) or ‘I want to feel the place’ (lake). That small question solves it more often than any table.
Warmth, Comfort and the Cold
Both are winter experiences, and both are cold in different ways.

- The Ice Chapel has an interior temperature around −5 °C and is out of the wind. It feels mild next to the outside, you are inside a building, and a warm toast follows in the Ice Bar. It is the more comfortable choice for the cold-averse.
- The frozen lake is outdoors. Winter temperatures near Rovaniemi can be anywhere from −5 to −25 °C, and in the deepest cold they go lower. The fire and warm drinks on the shore take the edge off, and we keep the time on the ice short.
For clothes, wear thermal base layers, an insulated parka, winter boots and mittens. Take the ring in an inner pocket. More detail is in our guide to Lapland in December. Fresh petals freeze at −30 °C, so we use high-quality artificial and preserved flowers for every bouquet of 30 roses.

A Promise in the Ice Chapel
From €1,800 · winter-only (mid-Dec–Mar). Everything you share stays between us — we never contact your partner.
When Each One Is Available
Because they are made of snow, ice and a frozen lake, both settings depend on the winter.
- The Ice Chapel opens in mid-December and runs until the end of March.
- The frozen lake is available from December to March, whenever the ice is thick and safe to walk on. We confirm the ice before the date.
Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks, so those dates go first; our guide to the week before Christmas explains what to book. January to March is quieter, and in March the days are longer and the light is softer. If you are coming outside these months, The Fireside Proposal (from €1,400) is available all year on private land and in winter you can step out onto the lake as well.
After the Yes: What Happens Next
This is a real difference between the two.

At the Ice Chapel, you stay at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos after the proposal. The entrance is included, the toast is usually in the Ice Bar — a drink in an ice glass, a hot drink or sparkling wine — and you can walk around the hotel together. If you are staying the night in a glass igloo, the evening continues without any transport at all.
At the lake, the fire on the shore becomes the celebration: warm drinks and cookies, sparkling wine and a few more photographs by the flames. Afterwards you drive back to town; private transport is an add-on. Many couples choose a restaurant dinner in Rovaniemi to finish.
If you want to continue to a wedding some day, see our Ice Hotel Wedding in Lapland page, which shows how the chapel is used for ceremonies.
Our Honest Recommendation by Couple Type
What we would tell a friend:
- First trip to Lapland, wants something unique: the Ice Chapel. It is a place you cannot find elsewhere.
- Outdoors couple, loves silence: the frozen lake.
- Budget-conscious: the lake from €1,400 is the better value; consider Right Where You Are (from €650) if you only want a styled setting at your hotel.
- Cold-averse or travelling with elderly relatives for the photographs: the chapel.
- Hoping for the northern lights: the lake, or Yes Under the Aurora for a guided hunt.
- Wants both: the chapel at the start of the evening, then the fire — ask us about custom proposals, which we design from scratch.

FAQ
Which is cheaper, the Ice Chapel or the frozen lake?
The frozen lake. On the Frozen Lake starts at €1,400 and A Promise in the Ice Chapel at €1,800. The chapel includes entrance to the SnowHotel and a toast, usually in the Ice Bar.
Which is warmer?
The Ice Chapel. The interior is around −5 °C and out of the wind, while the lake is outdoors, though a fire with warm drinks waits on the shore.
Do both include a photographer?
Yes. A professional photographer captures the moment and takes couple photos right after the yes.
When can we propose at the Ice Chapel?
From mid-December until the end of March, as it is rebuilt every winter.
What if the weather is bad?
In winter there is no rain in Lapland and falling snow makes the moment more romantic. We can bring clear umbrellas and agree a sheltered alternative.
Can we stay overnight at the Arctic SnowHotel?
The SnowHotel has suites and glass igloos. Accommodation is booked separately; ask us and we can coordinate the timing with your stay.
Our Honest Final Word
If you cannot decide between the chapel and the lake, you have already chosen well, because both are things you can only do here. The chapel is the more romantic occasion; the lake is the more beautiful landscape. The chapel costs a little more, includes more, and is warmer. The lake costs less and is bigger.
Rovaniemi Weddings is our own business, so of course we would like to plan it. Tell us how you met and how your partner likes to feel, and we will say which we would choose. See A Promise in the Ice Chapel, On the Frozen Lake and all ten proposals. We never contact your partner.
