Proposal in Rovaniemi in March: Deep Snow, Long Light and the Last Weeks of the Ice Chapel

March is the month many people overlook and many locals love: the snow is still deep, the days are long enough to be photographed in, the aurora is still around and the Ice Chapel stands until the end of the month. We run Rovaniemi Weddings, our own company, and this is how we plan a March proposal for travellers.

Short answer

March is one of the best months to propose in Rovaniemi if you want winter without the deepest cold. Snow is still deep, daylight is growing quickly, the northern lights are still possible, and three of our winter favourites are still open: A Promise in the Ice Chapel (until 31 March), On the Frozen Lake (while the ice is safe) and Yes Under the Aurora (aurora season runs to April). The Fireside Proposal and The Path to Yes work all year. Prices start from €1,400–€1,800 for those, and from €650 for a styled setting at your own cabin with Right Where You Are. Book earlier than you think: March is popular with people who want snow and light together. See all of our ten proposals.

Why March Is Worth Considering

Most guides push December and February, and we understand why. Christmas has the magic and February has the snow. But we live here, and when friends ask us for the month with the best balance, we often say March. The deep winter is still present, the evenings are no longer dark by mid-afternoon, and you can stand outside long enough to enjoy the moment rather than endure it.

Yes, Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, so we are not neutral. We plan proposals here all winter, and March is the month when the fewest things go wrong for the couples we look after: the light is kinder to a photographer, the ice and the Ice Chapel are still there, and the temperature is less likely to be at the extreme end. This is a guide to what March really looks like, which of our proposals suit it, and how to fit the moment into a trip.

What March Looks Like in Rovaniemi

The Lapland winter runs from November through early April, and March sits at the bright end of it. Snow on the ground is usually still deep. Temperatures can still be well below freezing, particularly at night, but you are less likely to meet the coldest weeks of January and February, and a sunny March afternoon can feel gentle. Treat that as a general pattern, not a promise: Lapland weather varies from year to year, and we always plan with a weather alternative.

The big change is light. After the polar night of December, the days lengthen fast, and by the end of the month there is more than twelve hours of daylight. For a proposal this matters in practical ways. A late-afternoon setting by the fire is bright and warm-looking in photographs. Blue hour arrives at an easy time of the evening rather than in the middle of the afternoon. And a dinner proposal does not have to wait until you have been awake for twelve hours in the dark.

Snow glare is real in March, so pack sunglasses. And if you are reading about the long season more widely, our month-by-month guide to proposing in Rovaniemi sets March beside every other month.

Which of Our Proposals Work in March

Most of the ten proposals work in March. The table shows the ones that people choose most for this month, with the season each is open.

The Ice Chapel in March: Why Timing Matters

The Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel is carved by hand every winter and melts every spring. It is bookable through us from mid-December to the end of March, which means March is your last chance in the season. If someone in your life has said “ice hotel” more than once, do not leave this one for the end of the month. Ask early for the last dates of the season. We hold the chapel only for the two of you, with the decoration and the photographer in place.

The chapel itself is cold but not as cold as outside, at around 0 to −5 °C. The visit is short and everyone wears warm clothes, which is part of its charm. After the yes, the SnowHotel entrance included in the price lets you stay and look around, and a toast follows, usually in the Ice Bar. The chapel is a short drive from Rovaniemi; we describe the full experience in our Ice Chapel proposal guide, and the venue is on the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos page.

The Frozen Lake: Ask Us About the Ice

On the Frozen Lake is open from December to March, but only when the ice is thick and safe to walk on. In March the ice is normally excellent, and the extra light means you can choose how you want it styled: soft afternoon light, deep blue hour or a candle-lit evening, perhaps with the aurora. We prepare the shore, set candles and lanterns on the ice and light the fire with warm drinks and cookies.

Because this is nature, we confirm the ice condition ahead of your date and agree an alternative if needed. Most often the alternative is the laavu on the same private land, which is why many couples who love the lake end up choosing The Fireside Proposal as the fallback.

Northern Lights in March: Good Odds, No Guarantees

The aurora season runs from late August to early April, and Rovaniemi sees the lights on roughly two out of three clear nights in the peak months from September to March. That is a good ratio, and it also tells you what matters: clear nights. Cloud is the real enemy, not the calendar.

Yes Under the Aurora is a private tour for two where the guide, who is also a professional photographer, picks the spot with the clearest sky that night. The flowers and candles are prepared while you watch the sky, and the photographer captures the moment you ask. If you are travelling for several nights, give the aurora a night to spare so the plan can follow the forecast; we explain what we do when it clouds over in our cloud plan.

Fitting the Moment Into a March Trip

A March trip of three or four nights is easy to plan around a proposal. A simple pattern that works for many of the couples we meet:

  • Day one: arrive, settle in, no plans. Jet lag and a long travel day are not the time to ask a question.
  • Day two: a normal activity for your partner to enjoy: a husky ride, a reindeer visit, a walk. This keeps the trip looking like a trip.
  • Day three: the proposal, at the time of day that suits the setting: late afternoon for the Ice Chapel or lake, evening for the dome or the aurora.
  • Day four: a slow morning, breakfast in the cabin, flowers and photographs to look back on.

Put the proposal early enough in the trip that a cloudy night or a delayed flight does not take it away, and late enough that you have settled in. For a longer plan, see our 3-day Rovaniemi trip with a proposal. As for secrecy, we communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and never contact your partner. Everything is prepared before you arrive and packed away after you leave.

What to Wear, and What to Do With the Ring

Dress for standing still outdoors. In March that normally means thermal base layers, a warm mid layer, an insulated outer layer, mittens, a hat and insulated boots. Our winter packing guide has the complete list. One bright or cream piece, such as a scarf or hat, stands out beautifully against snow and sky. Bring sunglasses for the afternoon glare.

Keep the ring in an inside pocket close to the body, not in an outer pocket where it will be cold. Keep the box shut until the last second, and practise the glove moment in advance: it is the small details that make people laugh in photographs. Warm hands matter, so a pair of thin liner gloves under your mittens makes it easier to take the ring out.

FAQ

Is March a good month to propose in Rovaniemi?

Yes. March keeps deep snow and aurora possibilities, but with longer daylight and usually less extreme cold than January or February. It is a good balance if you want winter conditions and comfortable photographs. A Promise in the Ice Chapel is bookable until the end of March and On the Frozen Lake runs while the ice is safe.

Can we still use the Ice Chapel at the end of March?

The Ice Chapel is bookable through us from mid-December to the end of March while the snow hotel stands. Dates near the end of the month are limited, so ask early. We confirm availability with the SnowHotel team directly.

How much does a proposal in Rovaniemi in March cost?

Our ten signature proposals start from €650 for Right Where You Are and from €1,400–€1,800 for the lake, the laavu and the Ice Chapel. Each price includes planning, coordination, set-up and removal, a bouquet of 30 roses and, in nearly every case, a photographer. A videographer, private transport and larger décor are add-ons quoted individually.

Will we see the northern lights in March?

They are possible until early April, and in peak months the lights appear on roughly two of three clear nights. No one can promise them, so we plan Yes Under the Aurora with spare nights and always have an alternative setting if cloud rolls in.

What if the weather turns bad?

In winter there is no rain in Lapland: falling snow is often more romantic. We can bring clear umbrellas and, if needed, agree a sheltered alternative in advance. The weather rarely stands in the way of a beautiful proposal.

How far ahead should we book a March proposal?

As early as you can; the date you want is more likely to be free. Last-minute proposals are possible if the date is available. We reply within one business day via Contact Rovaniemi Weddings.

Our Honest Final Word

Plainly: Rovaniemi Weddings is our company, so we would of course like you to book with us. But we also live here, and what we would tell a friend is simple. March is the month to choose if you want snow, light and a little more comfort, and it is the month people forget until the last Ice Chapel dates have gone. Decide early, keep the plan simple and leave the set-up to someone else.

For the full winter feel start with A Promise in the Ice Chapel or On the Frozen Lake; for sky and stars choose Yes Under the Aurora; for a quiet fire, The Fireside Proposal. If you already have a cabin booked, Right Where You Are brings the moment to your door. Tell us your story through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings, and we will reply within one business day.
