What the Day Is

This is a full-day private excursion built around a visit to a reindeer farm, where you feed the animals and learn about Sámi culture. The Sámi are the Indigenous people of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, and reindeer herding has been central to their way of life for generations. Legendary Adventure, the Tromsø operator, offers the day as a private tour only, so the minivan, the guide and the schedule are yours for the group.

The listing is short on detail, and we want to be clear about that. The operator tells us the duration, price, age, pickup time and inclusions, but it does not publish a full itinerary, so we cannot tell you the exact order of events or which farm you will visit. Our description here sticks to what the operator publishes and to what a visit to a reindeer farm in Arctic Norway generally involves. If a particular detail matters to you, such as a dietary need or mobility limit, ask Legendary Adventure before you book.

It helps to think about the structure of the day before you book. A 6 to 7 hour tour with a pickup at 08:30 means you leave your accommodation early and return in the afternoon, which in the darker months can mean coming home after sunset. Plan nothing for the evening except dinner, and let children nap on the way if they need to. If you have a flight or a ferry to catch that day, choose a different date.

It also helps to know why a private format matters here. At a farm, the animals set the rhythm, and a group that can stay as long as it likes at the feeding stage, or leave when a child is cold, gets a better day than one on a fixed schedule with strangers. That flexibility is much of what the NOK 35,000 buys.

The inclusion of snowshoes suggests that part of the day is spent walking on snow, but the operator does not say how far. We would treat it as a gentle outing rather than a hike, and we would ask the operator if anyone in your group has a mobility problem.

What It Costs Per Person

NOK 35,000 is a big number, and it is easy to dismiss without doing the arithmetic. Because the price is per group, it falls quickly as the group grows.

Group sizePer person (before 5% off)
2NOK 17,500
4NOK 8,750
5NOK 7,000
6NOK 5,833
8NOK 4,375

Even at eight people, this is the most expensive day in the Tromsø range per head, apart from the husky day. It is not a day for a couple on a budget. It is a day for a family or friends who want a private cultural experience, who have the group size to share the cost, and who value having a whole day to themselves with a driver and a guide.

With the 5% reader discount the total drops by NOK 1,750, which on a group of eight is NOK 219 each. The saving is real but small next to the headline price, so decide on the value of the day, not on the discount.

Who It Suits: Families, Three Generations and Small Children

The strongest argument for this tour is the age rule. It is listed for all ages, and a private minivan means a toddler can nap and a grandparent can sit out a stop. For a family with young children, there are very few full-day activities in Tromsø that work in winter, and fewer still that put the children in front of animals. A reindeer farm is at the top of that list.

The day also suits grandparents and parents travelling together. It involves little physical effort compared with a snowshoe hike or a husky day, the pace is yours, and the lunch gives everyone a long sit-down. The Sámi culture element adds something for adults beyond the animals.

It suits less well if you are a couple, a group of friends who want adventure, or anyone who expects dramatic activity. If you want physical outdoor time in winter, a Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 12,000 or the shared Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 1,500 per person is cheaper and more active. If you want animals as the centrepiece and have a big budget, the Private Dog Sledding – Husky Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 95,000 is the other big-ticket option, for ages 7 and up.

Sámi Culture: What to Expect and How to Behave

The tour name includes Sámi culture, and it deserves respect. A visit like this is a chance to hear about reindeer herding, traditional life and the relationship between the Sámi and the land, usually from someone who lives it. The operator describes the culture element but does not give a programme, so we will not invent one.

A few guidelines apply to any visit with Sámi hosts. Listen more than you photograph. Ask before taking pictures of people, and follow your guide’s advice on what is appropriate. Treat the animals calmly, because they are working animals, not pets. Do not expect a performance. If you approach the day as a conversation and a meal rather than a show, you are likely to get far more from it.

If Sámi culture is your main interest, you may also want to look at Legendary Adventure’s other Sámi offerings, such as the Spiritual Sámi Culture Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 17,500 per group for 4 hours, or the Spiritual Sami Experience with chance of Northern Lights5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 22,500, which adds an evening element. Both are cheaper than the full farm day.

What to Wear and Pack

You will be outdoors for much of a winter day, mostly standing or walking slowly, so warmth matters more than agility. Layer thermal base layers, a warm mid layer and a windproof outer shell. Wear waterproof, insulated boots, because you will stand in snow while you feed the animals. Bring a hat, a neck gaiter, warm gloves and a spare pair, and sunglasses for bright days. Our guide to what to wear in Tromsø in winter lays it out layer by layer. For children, add a spare set of mittens and socks, a snack and a change of base layer.

The operator lists lunch and coffee, so you do not need to bring food, but bring something to drink and anything your children need. A power bank is also useful, because the cold drains batteries.

One more practical note for families: tell the guide at pickup about any allergies or dietary needs, because the Sámi lunch is part of the day and the kitchen can plan better with notice. Tell them too if anyone is nervous around animals. Reindeer are generally calm, but a young child who is frightened of a large animal can be reassured by a guide who knows the herd. Wear boots that can handle wet snow and bring a spare pair of dry socks for the ride home.

Alternatives if NOK 35,000 Is Too Much

If the per-person price is too high, there are honest alternatives within the same operator’s range.

None of these has reindeer feeding as the core. If that is what you want, the farm day is the product, and there is no like-for-like cheaper version in the range we have.

Yes. It is listed for all ages, which makes it one of the few full-day winter tours in Tromsø that works for toddlers.

Can I book it for two people?

Our Honest Final Word

The private reindeer farm day is the right tour for a very specific traveller: a family or multi-generational group of six to eight, with children or older relatives who need a gentle full day, and a budget that can hold NOK 35,000 without strain. For everyone else, the fjord tours and the chase give more for less. We have not yet joined the day ourselves, so we have kept this guide to the operator’s published details. If the farm visit is the memory you want, book it early in your stay and ask the operator any questions before you pay.
