How to Propose in Rovaniemi: The Complete Guide to Getting It Right
We live in Rovaniemi and, through our own company Rovaniemi Weddings, we plan and set up proposals here for a living. This is the guide we would give a friend: where to ask, when to come, what it costs, how to keep it a secret during the trip, and which of our ten signature proposals suits which couple.

The simplest way to propose in Rovaniemi is to pick one of the ten signature Proposals in Lapland we plan through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, and tell us the story. From late August to April the most asked-for is Yes Under the Aurora (from €1,500): a private northern lights hunt for two, guided by a photographer who sets up flowers and candles while you watch the sky. In winter, On the Frozen Lake and A Promise in the Ice Chapel are the two moments people fly here for; all year round, The Fireside Proposal on private land just outside town is the warmest. Every option includes planning, set-up, removal, a bouquet of 30 roses and, in nearly every case, a photographer. Come for three or four nights, propose on night two, and tell your partner the evening is simply a tour.

Why Rovaniemi Is Such an Easy Place to Propose
Rovaniemi is the only city that sits directly on the Arctic Circle, and it is unusually practical for a surprise. The airport is about ten minutes from the centre, direct flights arrive from Helsinki all year and from London, Paris and other European cities in winter, and almost everything we use for a proposal — a private frozen lake, a laavu with a fire, a glass dome in the forest, the Ice Chapel in Sinettä — is within half an hour of your hotel. You need one evening and a good cover story, not a hire car.
The second reason is the calendar. The northern lights are possible from late August to April. The lakes freeze and the Ice Chapel is carved from mid-December until the end of March. In June and July the midnight sun gives soft light until well past midnight. Whichever month you are already coming, there is a version of the moment that works.
The third reason: there is no rain here in winter. The weather plan is about cloud and cold, not about getting wet, and we deal with both every week.
The Ten Ways We Propose in Rovaniemi, Side by Side
Full disclosure first: Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company. Alla founded the studio after planning her own wedding in 2024, and we are the people who hold the bouquet in the snow at −25 °C while you are still on the way. So this is not a neutral review; it is what we would tell a friend. Every option below includes organisation, coordination, set-up and removal, and the prices are “from” prices — add a videographer or a grand floral design and they rise.
| Proposal | From | Season | Photographer | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right Where You Are | €650 | Year-round | Add-on | A styled setting at your own cabin or hotel |
| A Thousand Petals | €700 | Year-round | Add-on | A room surprise, no audience, no rush |
| Surprise Proposal Photoshoot | €1,050 | Year-round | Included (2 hours) | Couples who want a full gallery, not just the moment |
| The Fireside Proposal | €1,400 | Year-round | Included | Private land, a crackling laavu fire, a reindeer in winter |
| On the Frozen Lake | €1,400 | Dec–Mar | Included | Candles on the ice, snow-covered pines all around |
| Dinner in the Glass Dome | €1,450 | Year-round | Included | A private three-course dinner with the question when it feels right |
| The Path to Yes | €1,500 | Year-round | Included (as your “guide”) | A surprise walk in Riisitunturi or Korouma |
| Yes Under the Aurora | €1,500 | Late Aug–Apr | Included (as your guide) | Asking under the northern lights |
| A Promise in the Ice Chapel | €1,800 | Mid-Dec–Mar | Included | The candle-lit Ice Chapel, yours alone |
| The Grand Romance | €2,700 | Year-round | Included | A heart of flowers, glowing MARRY ME letters, a flower-lined aisle |
Every option comes with a bouquet of 30 roses (seventy for A Thousand Petals) and a toast; in the Ice Chapel it usually happens in the Ice Bar, in an ice glass. Transport is included where the option says so, otherwise priced by distance from Rovaniemi.
Choosing by Season: What Is Actually Possible When You Visit
Most people choose the trip first and the proposal second, so start with your dates.

- Mid-December to the end of March: everything is open. This is the only window for On the Frozen Lake (the ice has to be thick and safe to walk on) and for A Promise in the Ice Chapel, carved by hand every winter at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos and gone each spring. The northern lights are in season, and the laavu at The Fireside Proposal comes with a reindeer to feed.
- Late August to November, and April: aurora season without the deep-winter crowds. Yes Under the Aurora works through this whole period; so does the glass dome dinner, where the lights may dance above the dome. September brings the autumn colours that make The Path to Yes in Riisitunturi so good.
- June and July: the frozen lake and the Ice Chapel are gone, but the private land, the surprise walk, the photoshoot, the dome dinner, the room surprise and the grand design all work, with the midnight sun instead of the aurora — propose at 22:00 and still have golden photos.
If you are coming for Christmas, read our guide to Lapland in December before you fix your dates — Christmas week is the busiest of the year, and the Ice Chapel only opens from mid-December.
Our Four Favourites, and Who Each One Suits
Yes Under the Aurora — from €1,500. The one people ask about most, because it hides itself: your partner thinks you have booked a private northern lights tour, which you have. The guide for the night is a professional photographer who knows where the sky is clearest; while you watch the lights, the guide prepares flowers and candles, captures the moment you ask, then photographs you together under the aurora. All transport is included. The best choice from late August to April for anyone whose partner has “see the northern lights” on their list.

On the Frozen Lake — from €1,400. A wide private lake, snow-covered pines, candles and lanterns on the ice, a fire with warm drinks waiting on the shore. Styled for the time of day you choose: soft morning light, the deep blue hour or a candle-lit evening. December to March only, and the quietest of all the settings.
A Promise in the Ice Chapel — from €1,800. Private use of the candle-lit Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos in Sinettä, a short drive from Rovaniemi, with reindeer hides on the benches. SnowHotel entrance is included so the evening carries on after the yes, usually with a toast in the Ice Bar. Mid-December to the end of March. The easiest cover story we know if your partner loves the idea of the snow hotel anyway.
The Fireside Proposal — from €1,400. Private land just outside Rovaniemi with nobody else around, a laavu with the fire already crackling, warm drinks and cookies, and in winter a reindeer to feed. Available all year. The one for couples who want warmth and a long, slow evening rather than a single dramatic reveal.

Yes Under the Aurora
From €1,500 · aurora season (late Aug–Apr). Everything you share stays between us — we never contact your partner.
Where the Proposal Fits in a 3–4 Day Rovaniemi Trip
Three or four nights is the usual Rovaniemi trip, and the proposal should not be on the last night:
- Day 1 — arrive, settle, see the town. Walk the river, eat well, go to bed early. Do not propose jet-lagged.
- Day 2 — the proposal. Evening for Yes Under the Aurora or Dinner in the Glass Dome; afternoon blue hour for On the Frozen Lake; whichever slot we agree for the Ice Chapel. Proposing on day two means that if cloud spoils an aurora plan, you still have nights three and four in hand.
- Day 3 — the daytime activity your partner came for. Huskies, reindeer, Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle about 8 km north of town.
- Day 4 — a slow morning, then home, or the night you keep as the aurora reserve.
With only two nights we can still do it, but write to us early so the date is held; last-minute requests are happily taken when the evening is free.
Keeping It a Secret While You Travel Together
This is the part people worry about most. The rule on our side is simple: we communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and we never contact your partner, your friends or the venue unless you ask us to. Everything is prepared before you arrive and quietly packed down after you leave.
On your side, a few things make it easy:
- Book the proposal as something your partner wants anyway. “A private northern lights tour”, “dinner in a glass dome”, “a visit to the snow hotel” are all true. You only have to leave out one detail.
- Keep the ring in your hand luggage, in a case you can open with gloves on, and on you on the day — not in a hotel safe your partner might open.
- Let us handle timing. For the aurora hunt the guide chooses the moment and the spot. For the lake and the laavu we set up while you are on your way; the only thing left for you to do is ask.
- Do not over-plan the words. Nobody remembers the speech.
What to Wear and What It Really Costs
Clothes. Dress for the setting, not the photo. On the ice, by the laavu or under the aurora you will be standing still outdoors in anything from +5 °C in September to −25 °C in January, so the usual Lapland rules apply: wool base layer, warm mid layer, insulated outer layer, mittens, hat and insulated boots. Our Lapland winter packing guide has the full list. For the photos, one cream or bright piece — a scarf, a hat, a coat — stands out beautifully against snow and night sky. The Ice Chapel sits at around 0 to −5 °C, so the visit is short and warm clothing is normal. For the glass dome you can dress for dinner.

Cost. The ten proposals start between €650 and €2,700, and that already covers planning, coordination, set-up and removal, the flowers and, in nearly every case, the photographer. What adds to it is predictable: a videographer, a bigger bouquet or a grand floral design, private transport beyond the included distance, a dinner cooked over the fire at the laavu. We send one clear quote with nothing hidden before you decide. If your real question is “what is the cheapest way to do this well?”, the answer is Right Where You Are (from €650): we style a setting at the cabin or hotel you have already booked, and you add a photographer only if you want one.
How to Plan It With Us, Step by Step
The process is the same for every option, and it leaves you as little to do as possible on the day.
- Weeks before — tell us the story. Write to us through the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page: how you met, what matters to your partner, how you want it to feel, your dates. We reply within one business day and suggest the option that fits, or shape a custom one — including a proposal during a private husky safari, snowmobile tour or reindeer-farm visit, coordinated with the operator.
- Within a few days — option and quote. One clear quote with nothing hidden, the date held, location and timing fine-tuned together.
- The days before — quiet preparation. Flowers, candles, photographer, transport, sparkling wine and the weather plan confirmed on our side. You pack the ring.
- The hour — the moment. We set up while you are on your way and step out of sight. You walk your partner in, the yes happens, the photographer captures it and takes couple photos right after, and we quietly pack down.

FAQ
How much does it cost to propose in Rovaniemi with Rovaniemi Weddings?
Our ten signature proposals start between €650 (Right Where You Are) and €2,700 (The Grand Romance). The most popular options — Yes Under the Aurora, On the Frozen Lake, The Fireside Proposal and A Promise in the Ice Chapel — start between €1,400 and €1,800. Every price includes planning, coordination, set-up and removal, a bouquet of 30 roses and, in nearly every case, a professional photographer. Add-ons such as a videographer or a bigger floral design are quoted separately, with nothing hidden.
What is the best time of year to propose in Rovaniemi?
Mid-December to the end of March gives you the most choice: the frozen lake, the Ice Chapel, the laavu with a reindeer and the northern lights are all possible. Late August to November and April are aurora season with fewer crowds. June and July swap the aurora for the midnight sun, and most options still work — only the frozen lake and the Ice Chapel are winter-only.
Will my partner find out?
Not from us. We communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and we never contact your partner, friends or the venue unless you ask. Everything is set up before you arrive and packed down after you leave. The easiest cover story is to book the proposal as the activity it genuinely is: a private northern lights tour, a dinner in a glass dome or a visit to the snow hotel.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day?
In winter there is no rain in Lapland, and falling snow only makes the moment better. We can bring clear umbrellas, and if needed we agree a sheltered alternative with you in advance. For the northern lights option the guide drives to wherever the sky is clearest that night; the lights themselves can never be guaranteed, which is why we suggest proposing early in your trip.
Can we propose during a husky safari or at a reindeer farm?
Yes. Besides the ten signature options we design custom proposals around any activity — a private husky safari, a snowmobile tour, a reindeer farm visit — and coordinate the moment with the operator. Tell us the story and the budget and we shape it from there.
How far ahead do we need to book a proposal in Rovaniemi?
The earlier the better, especially for Christmas, New Year and the February–March weeks, because the date you have in mind is more likely to be free. That said, we happily take last-minute proposals whenever the date is available — write to us and we reply within one business day.
Our Honest Final Word
Plainly: Rovaniemi Weddings is our company, so of course we would like you to book with us. But we also live here, and we have watched enough proposals from behind a snowbank to know what makes them work. It is not the budget. It is a moment that fits the trip you were already taking, proposed early enough in the stay that the weather cannot spoil it, with the set-up handed to someone else so the only thing you have to do is ask.
Between late August and April, start with Yes Under the Aurora. In deep winter, for the quietest setting, look at On the Frozen Lake or The Fireside Proposal. If your partner has ever said the words “ice hotel”, it is A Promise in the Ice Chapel. And if none of those is quite right, see all ten proposals and tell us the story — we reply within one business day, and we never contact your partner.
