A Custom Proposal in Lapland: How We Build the Moment Around Your Own Love Story

Ten signature proposals cover most couples, but some stories do not fit a menu. We run Rovaniemi Weddings, our own company, and we design custom proposals from scratch around your story and budget. Here is how that works, which signature option is the best starting point, and what to tell us in the first message.

Short answer

If none of our ten signature Proposals in Lapland feels exactly like you, we design a custom proposal from scratch around your story and budget. The best starting points are the Surprise Proposal Photoshoot (from €1,050) when you want a natural, story-led scene; The Grand Romance (from €2,700) for a large installation; and Right Where You Are (from €650) when the place matters more than the set. Tell us how you met, what they love, and what the weather and season allow; we reply within one business day with a clear quote.

When a Custom Proposal Makes Sense

Most couples find what they want among our ten signature proposals: the fire, the frozen lake, the Ice Chapel, the aurora tour, the glass dome, the walk in a national park, the photoshoot, the styled room, the petals or the grand design. They start at €650 and every one is described in detail on its page.

But some stories are not generic. Perhaps you met on a ferry, or at a particular station, or you share a song, a food or a joke that belongs only to you. Perhaps you want the proposal at a specific place we do not list, or in a particular language, or with a few family members present. That is where a custom proposal starts. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and designing the moment from scratch is part of what we do, alongside the signature options.

A useful test: if you can describe your idea in two sentences, it is probably doable and often not expensive. “We met in a small café in Helsinki and she loves pine trees” is already a design brief. We do not need a mood board from you; we need the two sentences and the season. If you cannot yet describe an idea, start from the signature page that feels closest and tell us what you would change.

What We Need From You to Design It

You do not need to arrive with a finished idea. The more of the story you give us, the easier it is to build. These are the things we ask about:

  • How you met, and one or two small details that only you two would know.
  • What they love: colours, flowers, music, food, activities, a place.
  • How you want it to feel: quiet and private, grand and spectacular, playful, cosy.
  • Your dates and the season, because some settings are winter-only: the frozen lake and the Ice Chapel run December to March, the aurora late August to April, while most others work year-round.
  • Your budget, as a range. A custom proposal is designed around it, not around an unknown total.
  • Who should be involved: a photographer, a videographer, family or friends.

Do not worry about writing it well; three short paragraphs in your own words are better than a polished brief. We would rather read how you actually talk about them. All of this stays between us. We never contact your partner and we communicate only with you.

Three Good Starting Points

Most custom designs begin from one of three signature options and move from there:

  • Surprise Proposal Photoshoot, from €1,050. A two-hour surprise in nature, styled by us, with a photographer, a walk at Ounasvaara hill or Vaattunkiköngäs, and an optional second location such as a private reindeer farm (charged separately). The story can be woven into the styling: lanterns, candles, flowers, and decorative elements chosen for you.
  • The Grand Romance, from €2,700. A heart of flowers, MARRY ME in glowing letters, a flower-lined aisle and an abundant bouquet, designed and built on site and captured by a photographer. The location is up to you: a lakeshore, a forest clearing, a snowy hilltop or your own accommodation.
  • Right Where You Are, from €650. A styled setting at the cabin, villa or hotel where you are staying, in Rovaniemi, elsewhere in Lapland or anywhere in the Nordics, with a bigger bouquet or a grand décor design as options.

Proposals During an Activity

One of the most popular custom ideas is to ask during something you are already doing. We can coordinate a proposal during a private husky safari, a snowmobile tour, at a reindeer farm or on any other activity, working with the operator so that the moment fits the day. This is where our team earns its keep: we speak to the operator, agree the spot, set up while you are out of sight and step away afterwards. If you are building a day around a husky tour, see our husky and snowmobile day in Rovaniemi for the activity side.

What Can Be Customised, and What Cannot

ElementCan we customise?Note
PlaceYesIn Lapland, Finland, Sweden or Norway: Rovaniemi, Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä, Kiruna, Abisko, Tromsø, Lofoten
Flowers and stylingYesHigh-quality artificial and preserved flowers suited to Arctic conditions
Activity around the momentYesHusky, snowmobile, reindeer farm or another activity, coordinated with the operator
Photographer and videographerYesA photographer is included in most signature options; a videographer is an add-on
Season and weatherNoThe frozen lake and Ice Chapel run December to March; the aurora late August to April

We are honest about the last row: we cannot move the Arctic. We can only choose the setting that suits the season you can travel in.

Making It Yours Without Making It Complicated

A common mistake is to add more because it is custom. The most memorable proposals we help with have one clear idea and the rest is quiet: a place that matters, a few flowers, light, one detail that is truly theirs. Three details are usually plenty. If you are not sure which one to choose, we will suggest, and we will tell you when a detail is not worth its cost.

Budget is the same story. Tell us the range at the start; a custom design is built around it, and the quote is a single clear figure before you decide, with nothing hidden.

It also helps to decide what is non-negotiable. For some couples it is the photographer; for others it is privacy, or the northern lights, or being able to hold a hand rather than a phone. If you tell us your single non-negotiable, the rest can flex around it, and the design gets simpler and often cheaper. We would rather spend your budget on the one thing that will be remembered than spread it thinly across ten things that will not.

Timing, Weather and Practicalities

Custom takes a little more time than a signature option, so write earlier. We want a few weeks if possible, though last-minute requests are welcome if the date is free. In winter there is no rain in Lapland and falling snow suits the scene; we can bring clear umbrellas and agree a sheltered alternative in advance. In summer the midnight sun gives soft light until well past midnight, so custom settings are as possible in July as in January; the frozen lake and the Ice Chapel are the only ones tied to winter. For what to wear, see what to wear in Lapland in winter.

How a Custom Proposal Fits a Trip

Since we are in Rovaniemi, we know what is realistic in a day: the airport is about ten minutes from town, most proposals happen close to the city, and a custom idea can almost always be placed on your second or third evening. Choose a day when you have not just landed and are not about to leave, and keep the afternoon before free so that nothing in your own schedule can run late; a custom set-up is timed around your arrival, and we would rather wait ten minutes for you than rush the moment. Read our proposal planning checklist for an eight-week planning list if you are starting early.

How to Plan It With Us, Step by Step

A custom proposal follows the same four steps as a signature one, with a little more conversation at the start.

  1. Weeks before: tell us the story. How you met, what matters to them, how you want the moment to feel. We suggest the option that fits, or shape a custom one — start at Proposals in Lapland or write to us through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings.
  2. Within a few days: option and quote. One clear quote with nothing hidden, your date held, and the exact place and timing fine-tuned together.
  3. The days before: quiet preparation. Flowers, candles, photographer, transport, sparkling wine and the weather plan are all confirmed.
  4. The hour: the moment. We set up while you are on your way and step out of sight; you walk them in, the yes happens, we capture it and quietly pack down.

We reply within one business day, we never contact your partner, and everything you share stays between us.

FAQ

What does a custom proposal cost?

It depends on the idea, the location and your budget; we design around the range you give us. Signature options start from €650 and the most elaborate from €2,700.

Can you propose during a husky safari?

Yes. We coordinate proposals during private husky safaris, snowmobile tours, at reindeer farms and during other activities, working with the operator.

Do you work outside Rovaniemi?

Yes. Across Lapland, Finland, Sweden and Norway, including Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä, Kiruna, Abisko, Tromsø and the Lofoten islands.

Is a photographer included?

In most signature options yes; nearly every proposal includes a professional photographer and one can be added to any other, with a videographer available on request.

How early should we write?

As early as you can. A few weeks gives us the best choice of dates.

Will you contact my partner?

Never. We only communicate with you.

Our Honest Final Word

Most couples will find their proposal among the ten we already describe. A few will not, and for them we are happy to build one from scratch. Because this is our own company, we can say honestly when a signature option is simply the better fit; if so, we will tell you. Start with Surprise Proposal Photoshoot or The Grand Romance, look at all of Proposals in Lapland, and tell us your story through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings.
