A Boxing Day Proposal in Rovaniemi: Why 26 December Is the Calm After the Christmas Rush
Everyone asks about Christmas Eve; far fewer think about the day after. We run Rovaniemi Weddings, our own company, and 26 December is one of the gentlest days of the whole winter for a proposal: the family dinners are over, the lights are still up and the Ice Chapel is open. Here is how we would plan it, honestly, including the limits.

26 December works very well for a proposal in Rovaniemi: the Ice Chapel is open (our A Promise in the Ice Chapel proposal runs from mid-December to the end of March, from €1,800), the town still wears its Christmas decorations, and the day has a slower rhythm than 24 or 25 December. The best options for the day are the Ice Chapel, Yes Under the Aurora in the evening, Dinner in the Glass Dome or the The Fireside Proposal by day. Dates around Christmas and New Year fill early, so write to us as soon as you know your travel dates; see all ten at Proposals in Lapland.

Why Boxing Day Is an Underrated Day to Propose
Christmas Eve is the day most couples picture, and it is lovely. But it is also the day when many restaurants and services in Finland keep reduced hours, and when travellers are tired from arriving. 26 December is different. You have had a day to settle, you have probably already done the Santa Claus Village visit or a family dinner, and the pressure of “the big day” has gone. That makes it easier to keep a secret and easier to be present.
We are the two people at Rovaniemi Weddings — our own company — who check the calendar every week, and we can say that this is a day with a different pace for us too. Set-up, flowers, candles and the photographer all fit more calmly when there is no rush of Christmas Eve around them. Read our Lapland Christmas season guide for the wider planning picture; this post is about the one day that follows it.
There is also a practical argument. If your trip is a long weekend from 24 to 27 December, the 26th is the one evening that is neither the arrival nor the departure. You are rested, you know the town a little, and you still have a full day after the question to enjoy being engaged. Couples who propose on the last evening tell us they spend the flight home wishing they had had one more day to celebrate; couples who propose on the first evening spend it checking the pocket for the ring. The middle of a trip is the calmest place for the question.
The Ice Chapel on 26 December
The Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos in Sinettä, about 30 minutes from Rovaniemi, is carved by hand from snow and crystal-clear ice every winter, and it exists for one season only. For A Promise in the Ice Chapel, from €1,800, it is yours alone for the proposal: we decorate it, there is a bouquet of 30 roses, a professional photographer captures the moment and photographs you together straight after, and a toast follows, usually in the Ice Bar. Entrance to the SnowHotel is included so the evening can carry on after the yes.

Inside the snow hotel the air is cold but still, and candlelight glows through the walls. Add a warm drink and it is a very different feeling from standing outside at −20 °C. Because this is an indoor-feeling space, it is one of our favourite choices for a partner who dislikes the cold; for more on the venue read about the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos.
Four Other Ways to Do 26 December
- Yes Under the Aurora, from €1,500. A private northern lights hunt for two with a guide who is also the photographer; all transport included. Dark winter evenings make Boxing Day a good aurora night, but clouds decide, so we always keep a plan B.
- Dinner in the Glass Dome, from €1,450. A private three-course dinner at Invisible Forest Lodge, less than ten minutes from town, with the décor waiting outside or inside the dome.
- The Fireside Proposal, from €1,400. A laavu fire on private land with warm drinks, cookies and, in winter, a reindeer to feed. A good daytime option when you would rather be home for dinner.
- A Thousand Petals, from €700. A room surprise: rose petals, 70 roses on the bed, 15 heart balloons and a bottle on ice, for couples who prefer an indoor moment with no audience.
All are from-prices and include planning, coordination, set-up and removal. Photographer is included in all of them except A Thousand Petals, where it is an add-on.

A Boxing Day Timeline That Works
Here is the pattern we suggest when the proposal is in the Ice Chapel, because the days are short and the order matters:
| Time | What happens | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Late morning | Slow breakfast, a short walk or a coffee in town | Keeps energy up without a big plan |
| Early afternoon | Rest, change into warm clothes | You will be outside later |
| Afternoon, in the twilight | Drive to Sinettä; we have already set up the chapel | Candlelight is at its best as light fades |
| The moment | You walk your partner in; we step out of sight; the yes; photographs | Private, quiet, 20–30 minutes |
| After | Toast in the Ice Bar, then dinner or the way back | The evening continues without a hard stop |
Your exact times are agreed with us and with the venue when we confirm the date; we never choose them without you.

A Promise in the Ice Chapel
From €1,800 · winter-only (mid-Dec–Mar). Everything you share stays between us — we never contact your partner.
What to Wear in the Ice Chapel
Inside a snow hotel the temperature sits just below freezing, so think “cold, calm, still” rather than “arctic wind”. Thermal layers, wool, warm boots and a hat are the foundation; put the nicest coat on top for the photographs. The partner proposing should keep gloves thin enough to open a ring box. Our full packing notes are in what to wear in Lapland in winter, and they apply here too.

For the person being surprised, the easiest nudge is a simple one: “wear something warm and something you like in photos”. It sounds like holiday advice, which it is. Shoes matter more than anything: you will walk on packed snow and inside the hotel on ice floors with hides and blankets, so insulated boots with a good sole beat anything fashionable. If you plan to keep the evening going afterwards, pack a lighter change of top in a bag that stays in the car, because the dinner room is warm.
Keeping It Secret During Christmas Week
Christmas week is a gift for secrecy: nobody asks why you are dressed up or why a car arrives in the afternoon. A few practical points:
- Tell your partner you are doing a “snow hotel visit”; it is true, and it is not a lie that spoils anything.
- Let us contact only you; we never write to your partner, friends or the venue unless you ask.
- If you travel with family or friends, decide who knows. If you want parents or children close by for the photographs, tell us and we plan where they wait and when they appear.
Weather, Clouds and Plan B
There is no rain in Lapland in winter. In the Ice Chapel the weather hardly matters; on a lake or under the sky, we agree a sheltered alternative in advance and can bring clear umbrellas for falling snow. For the aurora evening we cannot promise the lights, and no honest planner can, but a private tour for two with a photographer-guide gives you two things whatever happens: the proposal and the pictures.
On the cold itself: Lapland in late December can be anywhere from mild by Arctic standards to properly severe. We do not forecast it in a blog post; we look at the real forecast with you a few days before and decide whether the outdoor plan or the chapel plan fits better. Candles and lanterns are chosen for the cold and wind, and our flowers are high-quality artificial and preserved blooms made for Arctic conditions, because fresh petals freeze at −30 °C. Your bouquet will look exactly as it did in the studio when you receive it.
What Boxing Day Is Not Good For
Honest limits: dates around Christmas and New Year are in demand for the Ice Chapel and for private tours, so you may not get the exact hour you want if you write late; some services in town run to reduced holiday hours; and daylight is short, so photographs happen in twilight. None of those stop a beautiful moment, but they are why we ask you to write early.
How to Plan It With Us, Step by Step
The path from first message to the ring on the finger is short, and it looks like this when the date is Boxing Day.
- Weeks before: tell us the story. How you met, what matters to them, how you want the moment to feel. We suggest the option that fits, or shape a custom one — start at Proposals in Lapland or write to us through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings.
- Within a few days: option and quote. One clear quote with nothing hidden, your date held, and the exact place and timing fine-tuned together.
- The days before: quiet preparation. Flowers, candles, photographer, transport, sparkling wine and the weather plan are all confirmed.
- The hour: the moment. We set up while you are on your way and step out of sight; you walk them in, the yes happens, we capture it and quietly pack down.
Write to us as soon as you know your dates; we will tell you plainly whether 26 December is free. We reply within one business day.
FAQ
Is the Ice Chapel open on 26 December?
Yes. The Ice Chapel is built each winter and our proposal there is bookable from mid-December until the end of March.
How much does a Boxing Day proposal cost?
From €650 for a styled setting at your accommodation, from €1,500 for the private northern lights tour and from €1,800 for the Ice Chapel. All prices include planning, set-up, removal and, for most options, a photographer.
Do you work on public holidays?
Yes, we plan proposals around Christmas and New Year. Availability is confirmed with each venue, so write early.
What if we land late on 25 December?
Then we suggest the evening of the 26th or the 27th for the proposal and keep the first night free for rest.
Can a photographer be added to the cheaper options?
Yes, a photographer is available as an add-on to every option and we would choose it before any other extra.
Will my partner find out?
Not from us. We only communicate with you.
Our Honest Final Word
If you can only be in Rovaniemi at Christmas, do not feel that the proposal has to happen on Christmas Eve. Boxing Day gives you the lights, the snow and the Ice Chapel with less pressure, and a calmer calendar for us. This is our own company and we are biased towards a day we know works; if it does not suit your trip we will say so. Start with A Promise in the Ice Chapel, compare it with Yes Under the Aurora and Dinner in the Glass Dome, and write to us through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings.
