Treehouse or Villa in Bocas del Toro: Mono vs Estrella De Mar

Six to eight people, one Caribbean island lodge, two very different ways to sleep: a treetop cabaña 40 feet up in the rainforest or a three-bedroom beachfront villa with air conditioning. Here is how we would choose between them.

Travelling in a bigger group changes the accommodation question. Two or three separate rooms scatter everyone along the beach; a single shared space keeps the family or friends together, with a place to gather that is not the dining table. At Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos there are exactly two units built for that: the Mono treehouse and the Estrella De Mar villa. We have not stayed at either yet, so everything below comes from the lodge’s own descriptions and booking terms, plus our experience planning trips for groups.

Short answer

For a treehouse vs villa stay in Bocas del Toro, pick the villa if you are seven or eight, want air conditioning or a kitchen, and the treehouse if you are up to six and dream of sleeping in the canopy. The short version: two units, two moods

The Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña is the lodge’s most private and exclusive accommodation. It sleeps up to six: the first floor is fully open-air with up to four twin beds and an en-suite bathroom, and the second level is fully screened-in with a king bed, an open bathroom and lounge space. A large covered porch looks over the rainforest from 40 feet up.

The Estrella De Mar Tropical Beachfront Villa is a two-storey, three-bedroom house with a seafront view. It sleeps up to eight (three king beds plus up to two twin beds), every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and a sea-view balcony, and there is a living room, a well-equipped kitchen, a dining room and outdoor lounge space. It is the only air-conditioned accommodation at Casa Cayuco.

If you want a quick rule: Mono is an experience, Estrella De Mar is a base. Neither is wrong; they suit different groups.

Sleeping in the treetops: what Mono is like

The appeal of Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama is simple: you wake up in the rainforest. The lower floor has no walls to speak of, so you hear the jungle at night and see it at first light, and the twin beds suit children or friends who would rather not share a bed. The upper level is the fully screened-in retreat with the king bed, which makes it a natural choice for parents or a couple, with the kids downstairs.

It is worth being honest about the trade-offs. You climb a staircase to get in, so it is not the room for anyone with mobility problems or a toddler (the lodge accepts guests from age 5 anyway). The lower floor is open-air and there is no air conditioning, so you rely on the high-powered ceiling fan and the Caribbean breeze. If the idea of tree frogs, geckos and the odd bat outside your room is part of the adventure, you will love it. If it makes you nervous, look at a screened room instead.

Families with teenagers are the ones we imagine here: the older kids get the open-air floor and the sense that they are in their own treehouse, the adults get the screened level above.

Staying in the villa: what Estrella De Mar is like

Estrella De Mar Tropical Beachfront Villa4% off · HungryTravelPanama is the only unit at Casa Cayuco where you could host a dinner party for yourselves. Three bedrooms, each with a king bed and its own en-suite bathroom, sit around a living room, dining room and kitchen, with a balcony and outdoor lounge space facing the sea. The lodge describes it as blending open-air tropical living with fully climate-controlled bedrooms, and the photos show a balcony swing bed that will win any argument about who gets the best seat.

Because the bedrooms are air-conditioned, it is the room we would point to for heat-sensitive guests, grandparents, or anyone who sleeps badly in warm weather. It also works well when two or three couples travel together, since each couple has a private bedroom and bathroom. Up to two extra twin beds make room for eight guests in total.

The villa still comes with all the services of the full-service lodge: meals are served at the communal tables and on the dock, daily housekeeping is included and the staff are on site 24/7. The kitchen is there for convenience, such as keeping drinks or snacks to hand, rather than because you need to cook.

Who should book which

  • Family of four to six with older kids: Mono, for the novelty and the privacy. Check that every child is at least 5.
  • Three generations, seven or eight people: Estrella De Mar. Air conditioning, three bathrooms and a shared living room make it the easiest option. See also our multigenerational holiday guide.
  • Two or three couples: Estrella De Mar, because privacy per couple matters more than the treehouse.
  • Friends or siblings on a trip together, up to six: Mono, if you are happy with twin beds on the open-air floor.
  • Anyone who needs a cool, bug-free night: Estrella De Mar for air conditioning, or a fully screened room such as Rana (see our guide for guests who dislike bugs).

If your group is larger than eight, you will need more than one unit, or the whole lodge. Casa Cayuco hosts up to 53 guests, a group of 30 or more can reserve all of it, and groups of 20 or more get discounted per-person rates by custom quote from the lodge.

What is included, and what is extra

Whichever unit you choose, the stay works almost like an all-inclusive, which is a big help when you are budgeting for six or eight people:

  • Round-trip scheduled speedboat transfer from Bocas Town
  • All meals: chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack
  • Locally grown coffee and tea every morning
  • Sea kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats
  • A guided tour of Salt Creek village
  • Daily housekeeping and 24/7 on-site staff

Not included: drinks, guided excursions, staff gratuities (the lodge suggests 12–15% of the stay), the 10% Panamanian hotel tax on room charges and the 7% tax on excursions and beverages. Room rates are not published on the lodge’s website, so we cannot quote a price. Check live rates for your dates through Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama. For the full picture of extras, read our guide to what is included and what costs extra.

Making the most of a group stay

A group is a chance to share excursions, which are priced per person and planned with the in-house guides when you arrive, so there is no need to book them in advance. Typical favourites include a half-day trip to the Zapatillas islands ($80 per person), mangrove snorkelling ($85), the Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour ($70) and a Monkey Island visit ($70). Prices are as listed on Casa Cayuco’s website in November 2026 and may change.

Some excursions have minimum numbers, which is easier to meet with a group: surfing needs two people and the full-day Nidori Beach trip ($135) needs three. Surfing is only for strong swimmers and confident surfers, and the swell is biggest from November to April.

Meals are served at communal tables, with a long table on the dock for dinner under the stars. Private dinners on a porch or at the end of the dock can be arranged for special occasions on request, which is a lovely way to mark a birthday or anniversary in a big group.

Who neither unit is for

Casa Cayuco does not accept guests under 5, there is a three-night minimum, and Bocas Town is a 30–35 minute boat ride away, so these are not the units for nightlife or very short stays. If you need air conditioning but are only two people, the villa is probably more space than you need; take a look at the lodge suites or bungalows in our room comparison instead.

Our Honest Final Word

If we were booking for a group of eight, we would choose the villa without much debate: air conditioning, three bathrooms and a shared living space take the stress out of a big trip. If we were booking for a family of four or five with teenagers, we would take the treehouse, because it is the kind of thing children talk about for years. Both are on the same calm beach, both include all meals and both are managed by a team that Tripadvisor ranked #1 Family-Friendly Hotel in the World for 2026.
