Bugs in Bocas del Toro? The Screened Rooms at Casa Cayuco
Rainforest accommodation is wonderful until something with too many legs walks across the pillow. Here is exactly which rooms at Casa Cayuco are fully screened-in, what you will still meet outdoors, and how to choose if bugs worry you.

We get this question more than almost any other from friends planning a jungle trip: ‘but what about the bugs?’ It is a fair thing to ask before you fly to the Caribbean coast of Panama. The honest answer is that a rainforest lodge is not a hotel in a city, and the lodge’s own FAQ says so plainly. But Casa Cayuco does have several rooms that are fully screened-in, and the rest have tightly woven mosquito nets, so you can choose your comfort level. Everything here comes from the lodge’s own pages; we have not stayed yet.

What you will actually meet at a Bocas del Toro eco lodge
Casa Cayuco’s FAQ is refreshingly candid: you will see geckos, golden silk orb-weaver spiders, bats, poison dart frogs and small caimans around the property, and there are mosquitoes and sandflies (‘chitras’) at dusk and dawn. The lodge says bug nets are tightly woven and recommends natural insect repellent. Bats are described as the lodge’s resident bug catchers.

The lodge also says malaria and Zika are not a concern in its region, and that Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are good to have but not required. We are not doctors, so please check with yours before travelling. For a longer look at what to bring, see our packing list for Bocas del Toro.
The fully screened-in rooms
Casa Cayuco is open-air by design, with ceiling fans and mosquito nets in every cabin and suite. But four accommodations add real screening:

- Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama — on the second floor of the main lodge, a cosy, fully screened-in room with an en-suite bathroom and jungle-canopy views. One queen bed plus one twin, sleeps 3.
- Starfish Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama (new) — a fully screened-in one-bedroom bungalow with a pentagonal layout, a king bed and a deck terrace by the sea. Sleeps 2.
- Cangrejo Beachfront Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama (new) — a fully screened-in two-bedroom beachfront cabaña with a large deck terrace. Sleeps 4.
- Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama — the second level is fully screened-in with a king bed; the first floor is open-air.
Starfish and Cangrejo are ready for stays from 15 December 2026, and their photos are design renderings.
Our pick for bug-nervous couples: Rana or Starfish
Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama is available now and sits in the main lodge, so you are close to the dining area and the lounge. It sleeps three, which also makes it a good fit for a parent with one child aged five or older. If you want something more private and beachfront, Starfish Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama is the new option: a king bed, full bathroom and a sea-facing deck, all behind screens.

For more about the honeymoon-style rooms, see our honeymoon guide.
Our pick for bug-nervous families: Cangrejo
A family of four with one anxious sleeper should look at Cangrejo Beachfront Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama: two bedrooms, each with a king bed (one converts to two XL twin beds), and everything screened. Children must be five or older at Casa Cayuco, and the cabaña lets older kids have their own door. Until it opens on 15 December 2026, the Mono treetop upper floor is the only screened sleeping area that suits larger groups.

If you take an open-air room anyway
Most guests sleep in open-air bungalows and are happy. The lodge’s advice, and ours: tuck the mosquito net in at night, use natural repellent at dusk and dawn, pack a flashlight or headlamp for evening walks, and wear closed shoes or trail shoes on jungle paths. Keep snacks out of the room and shake out shoes in the morning. The high-powered ceiling fan also helps keep flying insects away from you at night.
The beach itself is generally pleasant. Evenings at the dock, with a three-course dinner and stingrays gliding past, are a highlight of the stay — but sandflies and mosquitoes at dusk are normal in the tropics, so we would not promise a bug-free evening anywhere in Bocas.
A night-by-night way to think about it
It helps to picture a normal evening rather than a worst case. Dinner is a three-course meal at communal tables, often on the dock, and the afternoon snack is brought to wherever you are sitting. After dinner most guests drift back along the boardwalk with a headlamp. In a screened-in room such as Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama you can leave the lights on, read in bed and open nothing; in an open-air bungalow you will sleep under a net with the fan running, and the sounds of the forest fill the room.
Morning is the reverse: coffee and tea are brought around locally grown and small-batch, breakfast is a chef’s choice, and the jungle trail from the lodge is at its liveliest, with poison dart frogs, sloths, monkeys and birds. If a frog on the path is a thrill for you and a spider on the porch rail is a problem, you are probably an ideal guest for a screened room: you keep the wildlife on your terms. Children aged five and over often love this part; it is the adults who sometimes need the screen.
One more practical point is the open-air bathroom, which every unit has. It is part of the design and part of the charm, but it does mean the bathroom is not sealed from the outdoors. If that worries you, ask the lodge before booking which unit best suits your comfort level — the lodge can tell you which unit suits you best.
Where bugs matter least: seasons and timing
The lodge says Bocas is warm all year (about 27 °C / 82 °F), with February to April and August to October generally drier, and November to January and May to July rainier. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning. We cannot give you a bug forecast, but a drier month typically means fewer puddles. Our March in Bocas del Toro guide explains one of the driest windows.
Who this lodge is not for
If any insect at all makes you panic, a screened room reduces the risk but cannot remove it: lizards, frogs and bats are part of the jungle outside your door, and Casa Cayuco is a rainforest lodge. A city hotel in Panama City or Boquete would be calmer. Also remember the lodge does not take guests under 5 and has a three-night minimum.
