Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow: A Thatched-Roof Hideaway for Two
Pelicano is the smallest and most unusual bungalow at Casa Cayuco: a thatched roof, a step-down bathroom and a wraparound porch on the beach. Here is what the lodge says about it, who it suits and who should book something else.

Most couples searching for a beachfront bungalow in Panama want the same three things: privacy, a sea breeze and something that feels special. Pelicano is the room Casa Cayuco itself recommends for honeymooners and anyone celebrating, so we looked at it closely. Everything below comes from the lodge’s own description and booking terms; we have not stayed there yet and we will not pretend otherwise.
The Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow is a two-guest, queen-bed bungalow with a thatched roof, set on the beach at Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos. It is the lodge’s smallest cabin and, in its own words, the perfect suite for honeymooners or a special occasion. What the Pelicano bungalow actually is
Pelicano sleeps two on a single queen bed. It is a beachfront bungalow, which means the sand and the Caribbean are a few steps from your door rather than a boat ride away. Casa Cayuco describes it as the smallest yet most unique of its cabins, with a thatched roof and a step-down bathroom.

The detail we like best is the wraparound porch. The lodge pitches it as an ideal spot to read a book while watching the wildlife around you, and on a jungle-edge beach that usually means birds, lizards and the odd sloth if you are patient. Like the other cabins it is open-air in design, with an en-suite bathroom, a high-powered ceiling fan, a memory foam mattress, a mosquito net and high-speed wifi.
Who Pelicano is for (and who it is not)
Pelicano is built for two adults. That is its strength and its limit. It suits honeymooners, anniversary trips, a proposal weekend or any couple who would rather have a small, characterful room than a big one. If you want more floor space, a screened-in room or air conditioning, look elsewhere.
- Book Pelicano if you want a thatched roof, beachfront privacy and a porch that feels like a second room.
- Look at Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama instead if you want canopy views and a sea outlook from the main lodge.
- Look at Starfish Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama instead if you want a fully screened-in bungalow with a king bed; it is new and ready for stays from 15 December 2026.
- Skip it if you are travelling with children. It sleeps two, and Casa Cayuco does not accept guests under 5 in any case.

Open-air living: what to expect from the thatched roof
Pelicano is not a sealed hotel room, and it is worth being clear about that before you book. The lodge’s open-air design means fans rather than air conditioning (only the Estrella De Mar villa is air-conditioned), a mosquito net over the bed and natural sounds all night: waves, frogs, the occasional bat overhead.

Casa Cayuco notes that bats are its resident bug catchers, and that mosquitoes and chitras show up mainly at dusk and dawn, so bring a natural repellent. The nets are tightly woven. For most couples the trade-off is easy: you swap a hum of air conditioning for a sea breeze and a thatched roof that looks the part. If you sleep badly without a cold room, say so before you commit, and consider the villa for its air-conditioned bedrooms instead.
What is included when you stay in Pelicano
Casa Cayuco works almost like an all-inclusive, which keeps a couples’ budget simple on a remote island. Your stay includes:
- The round-trip scheduled speedboat transfer from Bocas Town (about 30–35 minutes each way)
- All meals: chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack, plus local coffee and tea each morning
- A guided tour of Salt Creek, the neighbouring Ngäbe-Buglé village
- Sea kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats
- Daily housekeeping and 24/7 staff
Not included are staff gratuities (the lodge suggests 12–15% of the stay), drinks, guided excursions, the 10% Panamanian hotel tax on room charges and a 7% tax on excursions and drinks. We have a full breakdown in our Casa Cayuco prices explained post. Room rates are not published, so use the live rates page rather than any number you read elsewhere.

Romance, the Casa Cayuco way: dinner on the dock and a private porch meal
Pelicano’s biggest asset is not the room itself but what surrounds it. Dinners are communal at long tables, and there is a large dock table under the stars where sting rays glide past. For special occasions, the kitchen can serve a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock on request, which is exactly the kind of thing to arrange in advance if you are marking an anniversary.

The food is predominantly plant-based with fresh fish brought to the dock every evening by local fishermen in a cayuco, a traditional dugout canoe. Allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten, so tell the lodge early. There is a full bar with Panamanian beers and organic or natural wines from Argentina and Chile, and you may not bring outside alcohol.
Days from Pelicano: what couples do
With a calm, swimmable beach out front, many couples start by simply swimming and paddling. Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear cost nothing extra. Guided excursions are paid on top and planned at check-in with the in-house guides, so there is no need to pre-book. Popular choices from the lodge’s list include:
- Isla Zapatillas, a half-day trip to two uninhabited islands with guided snorkelling: $80 per person
- Mangrove snorkelling, half day: $85 per person
- Sloth Creek, one hour by boat through the mangroves: $40 per person
- The Salt Creek village tour, included with every stay
The lodge also has an in-house massage therapist, who you book at check-in. Prices are as listed on the lodge’s site in November 2026 and may change. If you want help planning a longer trip around your stay, our how many nights in Bocas del Toro guide explains why we think four or five nights beats the three-night minimum.
Getting to Pelicano: flights and the boat
Most guests fly from Panama City’s Albrook airport to Bocas del Toro, roughly 50 minutes with Air Panama. The lodge recommends Air Panama flight 980, which lands around 2:00 pm and matches the daily scheduled boat, with flight 981 for the return. The boat meets you at the airport at 2:00 pm and the return leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm. Other times can be arranged as private transfers for a fee, and early pick-ups are not available. Our full getting-there guide covers the overland options too.

Our Honest Final Word
Pelicano is a small room with a big personality. If you want a thatched roof on the beach, a porch for long mornings and a lodge that handles the food, the boat and the activities, it is the room we would point most couples towards. If you need cold air at night, more space or a screened room, there are better choices at the same lodge.
We are straightforward about the trade-offs because the open-air style is not for everyone. It is for people who would rather hear the sea than a compressor, and who are happy to spend at least three nights on a remote island.
