Lodge Suite vs Beachfront Bungalow: Which to Pick

Casa Cayuco has two quite different ways to sleep: a suite up in the main lodge, or a bungalow with the beach at your door. Here is how Loro, Rana, Pelicano and Tortuga compare, and who should pick which.

When we compare lodges for our own family trips, the first question is never “which hotel?” but “which room?” At Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos that choice comes down to one idea: do you want to sleep in the canopy, close to the main lodge, or on the beach, a few steps from the water? Everything below about the rooms comes from the lodge’s own pages; we have not stayed there yet and we will not pretend otherwise.

Short answer

Lodge suite vs beachfront bungalow at Casa Cayuco comes down to views and privacy against beach access. The two room styles in one minute

Casa Cayuco has eleven accommodations in total, sleeping two to eight guests each, and nine are described on its site so far. For this comparison we look at four of the open ones: two lodge suites inside the main lodge building, and two beachfront bungalows along the sand. All of them share the lodge’s basics: an en-suite bathroom, a high-powered ceiling fan, a memory-foam mattress, a mosquito net, organic coconut soap and hair care made in Bocas, and high-speed wifi. Electricity is on 24/7 thanks to solar power.

The differences are about where you wake up: up in the treetops with the kitchen and bar below, or at ground level with the sea ahead.

Loro Lodge Suite: the canopy view

Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama sits high in the canopy on the third floor of the main lodge, with views of the Caribbean Sea. It sleeps two in a queen bed. The lodge points to its most unusual feature: an open-air shower with a view of the jungle canopy. If you like the idea of showering among the treetops, this is your room.

Because it is part of the main lodge, you are close to meals, the bar and the guest library. The trade-off is that it is a suite, not a bungalow: you will climb stairs, and the beach is a short walk rather than a doorstep.

Rana Lodge Suite: the screened option

Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama is on the second floor of the main lodge, cosy and fully screened in, with canopy views and sounds. One queen and one twin bed mean it sleeps three, so a parent with one child (age 5 or older) can share it. If insects are your main worry, our post on the screened rooms at Casa Cayuco goes into detail.

Pelicano and Tortuga: the beachfront bungalows

Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama is the smallest and, in the lodge’s words, the most unique of the cabins: a thatched roof, a step-down bathroom and a wraparound porch for reading while you watch the wildlife. It has a queen bed and sleeps two, and the lodge calls it perfect for honeymooners or a special occasion.

Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama is spacious and open-air, with an en-suite bathroom and a large covered porch where you can watch the waves and feel the ocean breeze. It has one queen bed and up to three twin beds, so it sleeps up to five — the one to look at for a family on the beach.

One thing none of these have is air conditioning — only the Estrella De Mar villa does. All the rest use fans and the sea breeze.

Which one for which traveller

  • Couples who want views and a bit of drama: Loro.
  • Couples celebrating something, who want the beach: Pelicano. Our honeymoon guide compares it with Loro and the new Starfish.
  • Families of three to five: Tortuga, or Rana for a parent and one child.
  • Anyone who hates stairs: a bungalow.
  • Anyone who wants the lodge life close by: a suite.

What is the same wherever you sleep

Every stay includes the round-trip speedboat transfer from Bocas Town, all meals (chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack), locally grown coffee and tea, daily housekeeping, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats, plus a guided tour of Salt Creek village. Excursions, drinks, staff gratuities (12–15% recommended) and the 10% hotel tax are extra. The minimum stay is three nights, and nobody under five is welcome. Our price guide explains what to budget.

Sound, privacy and the small practical things

A few honest differences that matter more than the brochure photos. In the main lodge you are close to the communal tables, so you will hear the lodge waking up and winding down; the benefit is that everything is a few steps away, which is handy with kids or after a long travel day. On the beach, the sound is surf and wind, and the breeze is stronger, which many guests find cooler at night. Bungalows are reached by boardwalk and sand rather than lodge stairs.

Jungle boardwalk on Isla Bastimentos – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama

Both room styles are open-air in spirit, so expect jungle sounds at night: frogs, insects and bats are part of the experience. Mosquitoes and chitras are most active at dusk and dawn, so pack natural repellent. The lodge asks guests not to use hair dryers, and outlets are US-style Type A, 110 V.

The lodge has a maximum of 53 guests, so even on a full night it never feels like a resort. Daily housekeeping is included, and 24/7 staff are on site.

Our Honest Final Word

If we were choosing for a couple we would lean towards a bungalow for the sheer ease of stepping onto the sand, and towards Loro if the view and that jungle shower matter more. For a small family, Tortuga is the straightforward pick. None of these is a bad choice, which is rather the point of a lodge this size.
