Why Lanzarote Works for a Christmas Escape

For a family from Finland the maths is easy. Flights from Helsinki take roughly six hours, Lanzarote is two hours behind us in winter so nobody has jet lag, and December averages about 20 °C against a Rovaniemi winter of deep snow and darkness. The operator’s table lists average highs of 20 °C in December, 18 °C in January and February and 19 °C in March, which makes the whole season dependable for pool afternoons and beach walks, though not for a sunbathing tan every day. Winter here is windy, evenings are cool, the sea is roughly 18 to 22 °C, and a fleece and a light waterproof belong in the case.

What a December Week Was Quoted At

We ran 5–12 December 2026 and 10–17 January 2027 through the booking engine for 2 adults and 7 nights, and the gap is large. We did not sample the Christmas and New Year weeks, so we cannot tell you those prices; ask the operator.

On the Farmhouse that is €862 less for the December week than for the January one, and the 5% reader discount on top would be roughly another €85 if it applies to the full total. Children 17 and under stay free at Finca de Arrieta, so the quote for a family of six did not differ from the two-adult quote in our January test. The live calendar is the only source for your own dates.

The Early-December Window: Warm, Quiet and Cheaper

If your children’s school or your own work allows a week before 18 December, that is where our first code is useful. It is not the festive fortnight, so do not expect decorations on every corner, but the weather table gives 20 °C and the pool is open. The January Window: Same Sun, Quieter Calendar

Plenty of families skip the festive fortnight altogether, because flights and homes cost the most then. What Christmas at an Off-Grid Eco Village Is Really Like

Finca de Arrieta runs on solar power with a generator back-up. According to the operator the homes have no television, dishwasher, electric kettle or iron, and there is no air conditioning or heating, because winter temperatures are mild. Hot water comes from a gas heater in each home. What you get instead: a children’s play park, toys, giant chess, ping-pong, donkeys, chickens and fresh eggs, an honesty shop open 24/7, a welcome pack with cava, wine, milk and coffee, and a Monday paella evening subject to availability. For some families that is exactly the anti-screen Christmas they want; for others it is a dealbreaker, so decide before you book.

Pack for evenings that need a jumper, a light waterproof for rain, a torch for the walk back from the pool after dark, and sun cream, because the winter sun still burns.

Getting There, Getting Around and Booking Rules

Finca de Arrieta is 20 km from Arrecife airport. Private return transfers can be arranged with 48 hours’ notice, and the package includes a complimentary 5-seater car for up to 7 days; drivers must be 25 or older with at least two years of licence history. Check-in is from 16:00 and check-out at 10:00. The Finca accepts 3-night stays (2 nights within a month of arrival), but peak weeks may have their own rules, so ask. A 30% non-refundable deposit is due at booking and the balance 30 days before arrival; cancelling forfeits the deposit and inside 30 days the operator retains 100%, so buy travel insurance.

A Gentle Week-Long Plan From the Finca

From a base in Arrieta, a winter week can be slow and still full. Spend the first two days at the Finca pool and on Playa de la Garita, where the water is calm. Add a day in the north for the César Manrique sights the operator’s area guide points to, such as Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes and the Mirador del Río, and another for the Haría market and the fish restaurants on the Arrieta seafront. A Sunday trip to Teguise market is a classic, and Timanfaya National Park is the big volcanic day out. Opening hours around 24–26 December and 1 January are often reduced on the Canary Islands, so check each place before you go and keep one flexible day.

Children who love animals will spend half the holiday with the donkeys and chickens; the honesty shop and the Monday paella evening make a nice rhythm. Joona and Alla would plan only one big outing every second day, since the pool and the 300 m walk to the beach are the real draw.

A Lanzarote Christmas is attractive, but the peak dates are the most expensive and the least discounted part of the winter, and we cannot quote them. If your dates are flexible, a week before 18 December or a week in January gives you the same pools and the same 18 to 20 °C with a lower price and 5% off. If they are not, talk to the operator early.
