Awards are easy to wave around and hard to interpret. We are family travellers from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, and we have not stayed at Casa Cayuco yet, so we only state what the lodge itself lists and what we can say about it in general terms. No quotes, no review scores, no counts: those are not ours to invent.

Short answer

The Casa Cayuco Tripadvisor Best of the Best recognition is this: in Tripadvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards the lodge was named the #1 Family-Friendly Hotel in the World, and it was also a Best of the Best winner in 2025. It also holds the Green Leaders Platinum badge and has been featured by Forbes, National Geographic Traveller, Condé Nast Traveler, Men’s Health / Men’s Journal and Lonely Planet. What Casa Cayuco has actually won

These are the facts as listed by the lodge, stated exactly:

Casa Cayuco's beach and docks on Isla Bastimentos from above – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama
Casa Cayuco's beach and docks on Isla Bastimentos from above Photo: Casa Cayuco
  • Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best 2026: #1 Family-Friendly Hotel in the World.
  • Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best 2025: a winner that year as well.
  • Green Leaders Platinum: a badge shown on Tripadvisor.

Casa Cayuco Eco-Adventure Lodge sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja, on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town. It is a remote lodge, not a city hotel, and that context matters when you read any award.

The Best of the Best tier is, as we understand it, the top tier of Tripadvisor’s yearly Travelers’ Choice awards, so winning it in both 2025 and 2026 is a more demanding result than a single local badge. The 2026 title is category-specific: it is for family-friendly hotels, and the lodge was ranked first of them worldwide. That is a very specific claim, and it is worth saying that “family-friendly” at Casa Cayuco means kids aged 5 and over in a remote setting.

We do not quote review scores or counts, because we have not verified them and they change. If a number matters to you, look at the lodge’s current Tripadvisor page yourself.

The press: who has featured the lodge

According to the lodge, Casa Cayuco has been featured in:

  • Forbes
  • National Geographic Traveller (Caribbean Collection 2025)
  • Condé Nast Traveler
  • Men’s Health / Men’s Journal
  • Lonely Planet

We will not paraphrase what those articles said, because we have not reproduced them here and do not want to put words in anyone’s mouth. “Featured” means exactly that: the lodge appears in their coverage. It is a sign of attention, not a guarantee of how your own stay will feel.

Read this the way you would read any press list: useful as a signal that independent editors found the place worth writing about, and not a substitute for checking the details that matter to you, like boat times, bed set-up and rules.

The lodge also lists these features on its own press and awards page, which is where we took the names. If a particular article matters to you, search for it directly and read the piece itself; we would rather send you to the source than summarise something we have not verified.

What a Tripadvisor award means for a booker

Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice programme is, as we understand it, based on traveller feedback on the platform. We would not claim more than that. Here is how we use it when we plan a family trip:

  • It is a shortlist tool. It tells you a property is worth a closer look, not that it is right for you.
  • Family-friendly has a definition. At Casa Cayuco it means a beach where the kids can swim, plenty of wildlife, and an easy rhythm. It does not mean toddlers: the lodge accepts guests aged 5 and over.
  • It rewards consistency over time. Two years of Best of the Best recognition (2025 and 2026) is a better signal than a single mention.

For the practical side of the stay, our guide to the family-friendly hotel award goes further into what suits families.

The sustainability badge, in plain terms

Green Leaders Platinum is shown on Tripadvisor’s page for the lodge. What we can say comes from Casa Cayuco’s own description of how it runs:

Solar panels powering Casa Cayuco – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama
Solar panels powering Casa Cayuco Photo: Casa Cayuco
  • Solar power with clean-burning propane, and electricity 24/7
  • Rainwater harvesting and purification for the whole property
  • Composting, recycling and bulk buying to cut packaging
  • Low-flow showerheads and organic bath products

On the community side, the lodge employs 28 people from Salt Creek, a Ngäbe-Buglé village of about 900 people, and all staff walk to work from the village. A portion of every stay funds village projects such as the Salt Creek Medical Outpost, run by the nonprofit Floating Doctors, which now holds monthly clinics.

We would still treat any green badge as a starting point. What convinces us is the specific, checkable detail above, and the fact that the lodge describes its practices openly instead of leaning on a label.

If you travel with children, the practical upside is simple: reliable electricity and purified water on a remote island, and a place where kids can see how rainwater, solar panels and composting actually work.

What recognition does not tell you

An award cannot tell you whether a lodge matches your trip. These are the facts we would want to know before booking, and they are the reason Casa Cayuco is not for everyone:

Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow beside the beach boardwalk – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama
Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow beside the beach boardwalk Photo: Casa Cayuco
LimitWhat it means
No guests under 5Remote location and safety. Not a toddler-friendly stay despite the family award.
3-night minimumGetting there takes a flight and a boat. One or two nights are not possible.
No air-conditioning, except the villaOnly Estrella De Mar has climate-controlled bedrooms; everything else is open-air with ceiling fans.
RemoteBocas Town is 30+ minutes by boat. No nightlife.
ExtrasDrinks, excursions, gratuities and taxes are not included.

Being honest here is part of why we chose to partner with the lodge. A place that is clear about its limits is easier to trust.

One more practical note on the weather, from the lodge’s FAQ: it is warm all year at about 27 °C (82 °F), rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and Panama is outside the hurricane belt. The generally drier months are February to April and August to October, and the calmest sea for swimming and snorkelling is August to October.

What you get for your money

Awards are one thing; the stay itself is what you pay for. Every Casa Cayuco stay includes:

  • The scheduled round-trip speedboat from Bocas Town
  • The guided Salt Creek village tour, with boat transfer
  • Sea kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats
  • All meals: chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack
  • Locally grown coffee and tea each morning, daily housekeeping and 24/7 staff

Not included are staff gratuities (the lodge recommends 12–15% of the stay), beverages, guided excursions, the 10% hotel tax on room charges and the 7% tax on excursions and beverages. Room rates are not published, so use the live booking engine rather than any number you find elsewhere. Budget for those extras separately, and bring some cash for crafts in the village and chocolate at the chocolate farm.

What the days look like on the ground

Behind the award is a fairly simple routine. Breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner are served at communal tables, with the afternoon snack brought to wherever you are. The cooking is predominantly plant-based, with fresh fish caught by local fishermen with hand lines and brought to the dock by cayuco, the traditional dugout canoe, every evening. A large table on the dock is used for dinners under the stars.

Days are built around the water and the jungle: kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear from the beach, a jungle trail that starts at the lodge, and the Salt Creek village tour. Guided excursions cost extra and are planned on arrival with the in-house guides. Two examples at the lodge’s listed prices in November 2026, which may change: the Zapatillas Islands half-day trip at $80 per person and Sloth Creek at $40. Our honest look at whether Casa Cayuco is worth it weighs these against the cost.

Which room should you book?

The lodge has eleven accommodations, sleeping 2 to 8 guests. For a family of up to five who want the beach outside the door, we would look first at Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama, which has a queen bed, up to three twin beds, an en-suite open-air bathroom and a covered porch. For older kids who dream of a treehouse, Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama sleeps up to six, 40 feet up in the canopy. For larger families or groups, Estrella De Mar Tropical Beachfront Villa4% off · HungryTravelPanama sleeps eight and is the one unit with climate-controlled bedrooms.

Two new beachfront units, Starfish and Cangrejo, are ready for stays from 15 December 2026; their photos on the lodge’s pages are design renderings. If you are choosing between several rooms, our comparison of all the Casa Cayuco rooms sets them side by side, and if you are travelling as a family we would also read about how each bed set-up works for different ages before you decide, since the twin beds in several units suit children better than adults.

Our Honest Final Word

The awards and press are real signals and a good reason to look closely at Casa Cayuco. They are not the reason to book. Book because the lodge suits your trip: a swimmable beach, rainforest, a calm rhythm and kids aged 5 and over. If you need air-conditioning everywhere, nightlife, or a stay of fewer than 3 nights, it is the wrong place.
