What the Tripadvisor award says (and does not say)
Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best awards recognise places that earn consistently excellent traveller feedback. In 2026, Casa Cayuco Eco-Adventure Lodge was named the #1 Family-Friendly Hotel in the World; it was also a Best of the Best winner in 2025. It carries Tripadvisor’s Green Leaders Platinum badge and has been featured by Forbes, National Geographic Traveller (Caribbean Collection 2025), Condé Nast Traveler, Men’s Health / Men’s Journal and Lonely Planet.

We do not quote review scores or invent testimonials, and an award is not a promise that your family will love every minute. What it does tell you is that a lot of families who stayed there were happy enough to say so. The rest of this guide explains the likely reasons, from the lodge’s own facts.
A beach where kids can really swim
The thing parents notice first is the water. Casa Cayuco says it is one of the only resorts in the Bocas del Toro archipelago with direct access to a calm, swimmable beach all year round, with steps from the dock straight into the sea. For a family with five-to-twelve-year-olds, that means you can watch the children snorkel in shallow water from a lounger instead of loading boats for every swim.

The lodge lends sea kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats at no extra cost, so a spontaneous morning on the water does not need a booking or a fee. Groups also get surf boards, boogie boards and floating chairs on the lodge’s list. The calmest sea is typically August to October, and surf swell is bigger from November to April, though the protected snorkel spots work all year.
Why it works for kids: nature everywhere, screens nowhere
Children from Finnish Lapland tend to be impressed by anything that is not snow, and Panama delivers. A jungle trail starts at the lodge; the Casa Cayuco Sendero is a two-hour guided loop with poison dart frogs, sloths, monkeys and birds, and a fresh coconut halfway. Sloth Creek is a one-hour boat ride through mangrove channels. Monkey Island, run by the Monkey Island Foundation for capuchin rehabilitation, is a two-hour visit. The Zapatillas islands are ten minutes away by boat.

Excursion prices are listed separately by the lodge (as of November 2026, per person: Sendero $25, Sloth Creek $40, Monkey Island $70, Zapatillas half day $80), and nothing needs to be booked in advance; the in-house guides plan activities with you at check-in. Free time at the lodge has its own pull too: hammocks, a library and a long dinner table on the dock where stingrays glide past.

Food for families, and what to know about age limits
All meals are included: a chef’s-choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack that comes to wherever you are. The cuisine is mostly plant-based with fresh local fish, and kid-friendly meal options are available on request. Allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten, so tell the lodge in advance.

The big family caveat is age: the lodge does not accept guests under 5 years old, because of the remote location and safety. If you have a toddler, this is not the place for this year’s holiday. Our Panama stays guide lists other ways to plan around it, and our guide to where to stay in Bocas del Toro explains the wider island options.
Getting there with children, step by step
Most families fly from Panama City’s Albrook Airport to Bocas del Toro, about 50 minutes with Air Panama. The lodge recommends Flight 980 (landing around 2:00 pm) and Flight 981 on the way home (leaving around 2:30 pm) because they match the one daily boat: the captain meets you at the airport at 2:00 pm, and the boat leaves Bocas Town at 3:00 pm for a 30–35 minute ride through the mangroves. The return leaves the lodge at about 12:30 pm. The transfer is included, round trip.

Tip from us as parents: plan a night in Panama City before and after, because the daily schedule leaves no slack. Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo; mention the lodge when you book.
An honest note on who should look elsewhere
Casa Cayuco is a specific kind of holiday. It is not the right pick for guests under 5, for one- or two-night stopovers, for anyone who wants air conditioning in every room, or for travellers who want bars and clubs after dark. Mosquitoes and chitras come out at dusk and dawn, so bring natural repellent and a headlamp. If you want a different style of stay, our guide to where to stay in Bocas del Toro compares Bocas Town with the outer islands.

A sample four-night family plan
Here is how we would shape four nights with kids aged 7 to 13, using the lodge’s own activity list. Remember that boat times and weather decide the details.

- Day 1: boat arrives mid-afternoon. Swim, snorkel off the beach, dinner on the dock.
- Day 2: the included Salt Creek village tour in the morning; kayak or paddle in the afternoon.
- Day 3: Isla Zapatillas by boat, ten minutes away, for beaches and guided snorkelling; a quiet evening with the library and hammocks.
- Day 4: the Sendero jungle loop for frogs, sloths and birds, then a free afternoon before the 12:30 pm boat the next day.
That leaves the Bat Cave, the chocolate farm and Monkey Island for another trip, or for a fifth night.

Our Honest Final Word
A family friendly hotel in Panama needs three things: a safe place for kids to swim, real nature to explore and food everyone eats. Casa Cayuco does all three, and the world’s biggest travel review site agrees. It is not for under-5s or anyone who needs air conditioning everywhere, but for families with children from 5 to 15 it is the Caribbean holiday we would book.
