Plenty of travellers weighing a Caribbean escape in Central America end up comparing Bocas del Toro with Belize, Roatán in Honduras and the Colombian islands. We are a family from Finnish Lapland, not local experts on every one of those places, so we keep the comparison high-level and hedged — details such as prices, flights and seasons change, and you should check them for your dates. What we can describe accurately is the Bocas side, from Casa Cayuco’s own information.

Short answer

Bocas del Toro versus Belize, Roatán and Colombia’s Caribbean islands comes down to what you want from the water and the land: Bocas is an archipelago of rainforest islands, mangroves and small boats on Panama’s Caribbean coast, outside the hurricane belt, with island lodges that can include all meals. For a family or couple who want jungle, wildlife and a calm swimmable beach in one place, our pick is Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama on Isla Bastimentos. The four destinations in one minute

All four are Caribbean, but they feel different. In general terms, Belize is known for its barrier reef and cayes, Roatán for diving and a resort-and-West-End scene off Honduras, and Colombia’s islands, such as San Andrés and Providencia, for their sea of many blues and a distinct Colombian-Caribbean culture. Bocas del Toro, in Panama, is known for its archipelago of islands wrapped in rainforest and mangroves, wildlife, and a laid-back mix of backpackers, families and expats.

We are describing reputations at a high level — please verify specifics such as flight routes and seasonal weather yourself. The one place where we can be precise is the Bocas side, because we partnered with a specific lodge there.

Comparing the trip types

This table is a generalisation to help you choose; it is not a review of any resort elsewhere.

If your trip is about diving a famous reef, one of the other islands may suit you better. If it is about rainforest, wildlife and a gentle family holiday, Bocas deserves a close look.

What makes Bocas del Toro different

The archipelago has boat-only access to its outer islands, which is part of the charm and the logistics. Isla Bastimentos, the large island east of Bocas Town, is mostly rainforest and includes the Bastimentos National Marine Park, with the uninhabited Zapatillas islands just offshore. Casa Cayuco sits at Punta Vieja on the southeast tip, around 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town through the mangrove islands.

From there, the Zapatillas Islands are 10 minutes by boat and Salt Creek, a Ngäbe-Buglé village, is five minutes away by boat. A jungle trail starts at the lodge. Casa Cayuco says it is one of the only resorts in the archipelago with direct access to a calm, swimmable beach all year round. See our overview of where to stay in Bocas del Toro.

Getting there and combining Panama

Most guests fly from Panama City’s Albrook Airport to Bocas del Toro with Air Panama, about 50 minutes. The lodge also lists Fly Trip flights, a Sansa flight from San José, Costa Rica, and an overland route via Almirante. That connects Bocas neatly with a city stay: Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo, Panama City (mention Casa Cayuco). If you are weighing Costa Rica too, read our Panama vs Costa Rica Caribbean for families comparison.

Who should choose which

Choose another island if you mainly want to dive a famous reef, if you want large resorts with nightlife on the doorstep, or if you want to travel with a child under 5. Choose Bocas — and a lodge like Casa Cayuco — if you want rainforest wildlife, boat adventures, a calm beach and a community feel. Read our eco lodge vs beach resort guide if that is the decision on your table.

How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount

Casa Cayuco’s own site says the best rate is by reserving directly, and that is exactly where our link goes. We are Casa Cayuco’s partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code, at no extra cost to you. Because the discount is tracked by the code alone, please follow these steps in order:

  1. Open our booking link (any of the buttons on this page). It opens Casa Cayuco’s own booking engine.
  2. Check that HungryTravelPanama is showing in the promo box before you search. If the box is empty, type the code in yourself — it gives 4% off.
  3. Choose your dates (minimum three nights; check-in 3:00 pm, check-out 12:30 pm) and pick your room. Live rates are shown there — the lodge does not publish nightly prices elsewhere.
  4. Confirm with the 50% deposit. The balance is paid on site by cash, bank transfer or card.

On cancellations: more than 60 days before check-in the deposit is refunded minus a $100 admin fee, 45–60 days out half of the deposit is forfeited, and under 45 days the deposit is forfeited in full. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.

Who Casa Cayuco is not for

We would rather you book the right place than our place. Casa Cayuco is probably not your fit if you are travelling with children under 5 (the lodge does not accept guests under 5 because of the remote location), if you can only stay one or two nights (the minimum is three), if you want air conditioning everywhere (only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan), or if you want nightlife — Bocas Town is a 30–35 minute boat ride away and the lodge’s own boat runs on a schedule.
