Two Caribbean coasts, one honest comparison

Panama and Costa Rica are neighbours, and their Caribbean coasts share a similar feel: rainforest meeting warm sea, wildlife in the trees, and a laid-back pace compared with their Pacific sides. That is why so many families end up asking which side of the border to choose.

We would be wary of anyone who claims one country is simply better. A lot depends on what your family wants from the week: a road trip with many stops, or a single base where you unpack once. We do not name or compare other places by name, since we have not stayed in them. What we can do is explain what Bocas del Toro offers, using what Casa Cayuco publishes, and be clear about the trade-offs.

Details of the other coast change, so please check current conditions and entry requirements for both countries yourself.

How the two trips tend to differ

In general terms, and hedged accordingly, here is how we would frame the choice for a family.

We deliberately keep the right-hand column cautious. Our goal is not to rank Costa Rica but to help you decide whether the Bocas del Toro style of holiday is what you are after.

What Bocas del Toro does well for families

Bocas del Toro is an archipelago of islands, mangrove channels and reefs on Panama’s Caribbean coast, close to the Costa Rican border. Casa Cayuco sits at Punta Vieja on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, about 30 to 35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town, inside the Bastimentos National Marine Park. The lodge says it is one of the only resorts in the archipelago with direct access to a calm, swimmable beach all year round.

For families, that translates into specific things. The Zapatillas islands are ten minutes away by boat, a jungle trail starts at the lodge, and kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are included. The Salt Creek village tour is included with every stay, and guided excursions, which cost extra, include sloth-spotting creek rides, a chocolate farm tour and Monkey Island. Tripadvisor named Casa Cayuco the #1 Family-Friendly Hotel in the World in its 2026 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards.

Then there is the food, which matters more than people expect with children. Breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack are included, served at communal tables, with a mostly plant-based menu and fresh fish brought to the dock by cayuco each evening. Allergies and diets are accommodated, and the kitchen can adapt recipes. Dinner on the large dock table, with sting rays gliding past, is the kind of thing children remember.

Finally, the lodge runs on solar power with electricity 24/7, harvests and purifies rainwater, and employs 28 people from the neighbouring Ngäbe-Buglé village of Salt Creek. A share of every stay supports village projects. For families who like their holidays to give something back, that matters to us.

Wildlife and activities your kids can actually join

Children aged 5 and up are welcome, and the lodge says kid-friendly meal options are available on request. In the trees around the lodge and on guided trails, the wildlife list includes sloths, monkeys, poison dart frogs, birds and small caimans. The Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop takes about two hours and passes poison dart frogs, with a fresh coconut halfway.

On the water, children can try kayaking and paddle boarding from the beach, free of charge, and snorkel off the calm shore. Sloth Creek is a one-hour boat ride through mangrove channels. The Monkey Island Foundation visit is a two-hour outing led by its founder, Francine. Prices are listed on the lodge’s website and may change, and there is no need to book in advance, because activities are planned at check-in with the in-house guides.

Not everything suits every child. The Bat Cave tour includes a creek by cayuco and a one-kilometre jungle hike, surfing is for strong swimmers and confident surfers only, and some trails need proper shoes. Ask the guides on arrival which outings suit your children’s ages and energy. Kayaks and paddle boards sit ready on the beach, and the water off the lodge is calm enough for first-time paddlers to practise close to shore under adult supervision. Parents who like a quiet moment can book the in-house massage therapist at check-in, or join a yoga session with the mats the lodge provides.

The practical side: dollars, boats and flights

Panama uses US dollars, and the lodge accepts cash, bank transfer or credit card. All meals, the afternoon snack and the round-trip boat transfer from Bocas Town are included; drinks, excursions, gratuities (12 to 15% suggested) and taxes are extra. Most guests fly Panama City to Bocas del Toro in about 50 minutes with Air Panama, and the lodge’s one daily boat is timed to the recommended flights.

Weather is warm all year, about 27 °C (82 °F). February to April and August to October are generally drier, August to October has the calmest sea, and the biggest surf swell runs from November to April. Rain usually falls at night. Panama is outside the hurricane belt.

Getting to the lodge is simple once you know the pattern. The captain meets you at Bocas airport at 2:00 pm for the recommended Air Panama flight 980, the boat leaves the dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, and the return leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm. Check-in is at 3:00 pm and check-out at 12:30 pm, so the first afternoon and the last morning are both short, and a fourth or fifth night makes the stay feel properly unhurried for children. Other boat times are a private transfer for a fee. If you are short of time before a flight, the lodge can store luggage at its bookkeeper’s office in Bocas Town.

On the budget side, keep a little cash for crafts in the village. The lodge asks guests not to use hair dryers, and outlets are US Type A at 110 V.

Doing both: Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro

You do not have to choose. Casa Cayuco lists two routes from Costa Rica: Fly Sansa from San José to Bocas, currently on Tuesdays and Thursdays and taking about 50 minutes, or the Caribe Shuttle overland. Check current schedules before planning, as they can change. That makes a two-country trip realistic, and it fits our habit of finishing a journey somewhere we can unpack for several nights rather than moving every day.

We cover the practical options in our Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro guide. You can also compare the Caribbean and Pacific sides of Panama in our Caribbean vs Pacific guide. Our Where to stay in Panama page lists every room at the lodge.

All rooms have a mosquito net, a high-powered fan, a memory foam mattress, an open-air bathroom and high-speed wifi.

Who Casa Cayuco is not for

We would rather you choose the right place than our place. The lodge does not accept guests under 5 because of its remote location, so families with toddlers or babies should look elsewhere. The minimum stay is three nights. Only the Estrella De Mar villa is air-conditioned, and all other rooms are open-air with fans. Bocas Town is 30 plus minutes away by boat, so it is not for travellers who want nightlife. If your family wants to move between towns every day, an overland trip may suit you better. And if the thought of geckos, bats and frogs near the bed makes anyone in your family uneasy, remember that the rooms are open-air, with tightly woven nets, though the lodge notes mosquitoes and chitras are active at dusk and dawn, so bring natural repellent.

Yes. The lodge lists Fly Sansa from San José to Bocas, currently Tuesdays and Thursdays, about 50 minutes, or the Caribe Shuttle overland. Check schedules before you book.
