August is the month we would pick if the main goal were getting into the water. Everything here about conditions comes from Casa Cayuco’s own FAQ and adventure pages, and we flag where it is our planning view. We are a Finnish family from Rovaniemi who have researched the lodge closely and partnered with it; we have not stayed yet, so this is a planning guide, not a diary.

Short answer

Bocas del Toro in August is warm, increasingly dry and the start of the calmest sea of the year: the lodge lists August to October as the best months for swimming and snorkelling, with an average of around 27 °C (82 °F) and no hurricane belt to worry about. August weather and sea conditions

Casa Cayuco’s FAQ gives Bocas del Toro an average of about 27 °C (82 °F) all year. It lists August to October among the generally drier periods, with September and October the driest of all, and it names August to October as the calmest sea for swimming and snorkelling. The big surf swell belongs to November to April, which means August is the opposite of a surf month.

Rain, when it comes, usually falls at night and clears by late morning. As the lodge puts it, forecasts showing thunderstorms every day are just typical tropical unpredictability. Panama is outside the hurricane belt. For a month-by-month view, our best time to visit Bocas del Toro guide puts August in context, and our September guide covers the next month along.

Why August suits snorkelling

Calm water helps beginners and children most. Casa Cayuco says it is one of the only resorts in the archipelago with direct access to a calm, swimmable beach all year, and steps from the dock lead straight into the sea. Snorkel gear, sea kayaks and stand-up paddle boards are included in the stay.

For guided snorkelling the lodge offers a Mangrove Snorkeling half day ($85 per person; soft corals, sponges, octopus, starfish, and a chance of dolphins, 25 minutes from the dock) and a half-day trip to Isla Zapatillas ($80 per person), two uninhabited islands in the national marine park with beaches and snorkelling, only ten minutes by boat. Prices are as listed in November 2026 and excursions are extra. See our guides to mangrove snorkelling and dolphins and Isla Zapatillas.

Zapatillas and the marine park in August

The Zapatillas islands are the postcard-style beaches of the Bocas archipelago: white sand, palms and shallow reef inside Bastimentos National Marine Park. From the lodge the boat takes about ten minutes. With calmer August seas the crossing and the snorkelling are at their most relaxed, which is why we would put a Zapatillas morning high on an August list.

The in-house guides plan excursions at check-in, and there is no need to book activities in advance, so if the weather turns you can swap the order of your days.

Which room to choose in August

With open-air rooms, the question is which style you want for the weather and your group.

A sample four-night August plan

Casa Cayuco’s boat leaves Bocas Town at 3:00 pm and the return leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm, so a four-night stay gives three full days.

  • Day 1 (arrival): afternoon boat, settle in, snack, swim, dinner at the communal table or on the dock.
  • Day 2: the included Salt Creek village tour in the morning; kayak or paddle board in the afternoon.
  • Day 3: a Zapatillas half-day with snorkelling; sunset from the dock.
  • Day 4: mangrove snorkelling or the Sloth Creek boat ride, then a massage with the in-house therapist if you booked one.
  • Day 5 (departure): breakfast, then the boat back to Bocas Town around 12:30 pm.

It mirrors what we wrote in our five-night day-by-day plan.

Practicalities: food, tax and tips

All meals are included: a chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, three-course dinner and an afternoon snack, with predominantly plant-based cooking plus fresh fish brought to the dock by cayuco. Not included: drinks, guided excursions, staff gratuities (recommended 12–15% of the stay), the 10% hotel tax on room charges and 7% tax on excursions and drinks. Bring some cash for crafts in the village and chocolate at the farm. More detail in Casa Cayuco prices: what is included and extra.

How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount

Casa Cayuco’s own site says the best rate is by reserving directly, and that is exactly where our link goes. We are Casa Cayuco’s partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code, at no extra cost to you. Because the discount is tracked by the code alone, please follow these steps in order:

  1. Open our booking link (any of the buttons on this page). It opens Casa Cayuco’s own booking engine.
  2. Check that HungryTravelPanama is showing in the promo box before you search. If the box is empty, type the code in yourself — it gives 4% off.
  3. Choose your dates (minimum three nights; check-in 3:00 pm, check-out 12:30 pm) and pick your room. Live rates are shown there — the lodge does not publish nightly prices elsewhere.
  4. Confirm with the 50% deposit. The balance is paid on site by cash, bank transfer or card.

On cancellations: more than 60 days before check-in the deposit is refunded minus a $100 admin fee, 45–60 days out half of the deposit is forfeited, and under 45 days the deposit is forfeited in full. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.

Who Casa Cayuco is not for

We would rather you book the right place than our place. Casa Cayuco is probably not your fit if you are travelling with children under 5 (the lodge does not accept guests under 5 because of the remote location), if you can only stay one or two nights (the minimum is three), if you want air conditioning everywhere (only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan), or if you want nightlife — Bocas Town is a 30–35 minute boat ride away and the lodge’s own boat runs on a schedule.

FAQ

Is August a good time to visit Bocas del Toro?

Yes, especially for the water. The lodge lists August to October as the calmest months for swimming and snorkelling and as a generally drier period.

Is August good for surfing in Bocas?

No. The biggest swell is November to April, so August is for snorkelling and swimming rather than surf.

Can kids snorkel at Casa Cayuco?

Children aged 5 and over can stay. Snorkel gear is included and the beach is calm. Ask the lodge about children’s water safety when you book.

Is August busy?

Summer holidays can be busy. The lodge holds a maximum of 53 guests, so check live availability early.

What is the minimum stay?

Three nights. Check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out 12:30 pm.

Is there wifi?

Yes, the lodge lists high-speed wifi in every cabin and suite.

Our Honest Final Word

If your priority is calm water, August is a strong choice: the sea settles, the reef is accessible, and the beach at the lodge is swimmable all year. The trade-off is that it is a popular holiday month, so rooms for families go early. If you want surf, wait for November onward.
