The classic New Zealand road trip starts in Auckland and ends in Christchurch, or the other way round. It makes sense on a map: you cover both islands once, you never double back, and you fly home from the far end. It is also the most common question we hear from people planning their first New Zealand campervan trip: what does a one-way actually cost?
The CampervanPlanet price page for New Zealand, updated on 3 November 2026, has a useful answer, based on live search data. It is the only example we found with a direct one-way against round-trip comparison, so we build this guide around it. We are writing as researchers rather than as people who have driven the route in a rental van, so we stick to the numbers on the page. If you are new to this, start with our campervan rental guide.
The southern summer is starting, so December to February is the season to plan for now.
The CampervanPlanet price page shows Auckland to Christchurch one way at about NZ$343 a day, against NZ$258 a day for a round trip. Typical prices run about NZ$163 a day from May to September and NZ$367 from December to February, with the cheapest offer at NZ$37. Code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off a booking at checkout.
The headline numbers
The price page is based on 2,293 prices for 111 vehicles from 23 rental companies, searched on 3 November 2026. It makes a few statements that are worth quoting before we interpret anything.
- A one-way from Auckland to Christchurch costs about NZ$343 a day, against NZ$258 a day for a round trip.
- Campervans in New Zealand typically cost NZ$163 a day from May to September, and NZ$367 a day from December to February, which is 125 percent more in summer.
- The cheapest offer in the search was NZ$37 a day, for an automatic from Lucky Rentals picked up in May.
- The cheapest month is June at NZ$142 a day, and the most expensive is February at NZ$450.
- The cheapest week with zero excess was NZ$1,038, from Escape Rentals for a campervan for two or three people in mid-March.
Read these as a map of the market rather than a quote. The NZ$343 against NZ$258 is a typical example, so your own dates and vehicle will give different numbers, but the pattern is reliable: one-way costs more than round trip.

Why one-way costs more, and how much
The difference between NZ$343 and NZ$258 a day is NZ$85, or about 33 percent. On a two-week rental that is roughly NZ$1,190 more in total, if the daily difference is a fair guide. Rental companies charge more for one-ways because they have to move vehicles back, or accept an unbalanced fleet, and because the pattern of demand is lopsided: more people want to go north to south than the reverse in summer.
That said, the extra cost buys you something real. A round trip from Auckland means either driving the full length of the country twice or flying back north, which costs money and time. A one-way from Auckland to Christchurch lets you see both islands once. On a trip of three weeks or more, many people find the one-way is worth it. On a trip of ten days, it often is not, and a round trip around the North Island or a South Island loop gives better value.
For a South Island-only loop, our guide to the South Island loop from Queenstown shows how to avoid the one-way fee.
The Cook Strait ferry
Between the North and South Islands lies the Cook Strait, and in a one-way trip you must cross it. The CampervanPlanet guide notes that the Cook Strait ferry links the two islands, running between Wellington and Picton, and you take your campervan across on board. Crossing takes about three and a half hours on the main ferries, and it is one of the best views of the trip.
Ferry fares for vehicles depend on the length of the van and the season, and they are in addition to your rental price, so check the current fares on the operators’ websites. In the busy summer period, book well ahead, because the ferries fill up. Also check your rental agreement: most major companies allow the ferry, but some require you to return the vehicle on the other island, which is exactly what a one-way does.
Wellington and Picton are good places to spend a night, and our guide to Wellington campervan hire and the Cook Strait ferry explains what to do while you wait.

Relocation deals: the $1 trick
One of the most interesting parts of the CampervanPlanet guide to New Zealand companies is the mention of one-way and $1 relocation deals. These are offers where a company needs a vehicle moved from one depot to another, and rents it for almost nothing, sometimes as low as one dollar a day, with a fixed deadline.
They can save a huge amount. The catch is that you must pick up and drop off on the days the company needs, often with limited flexibility, you may get a smaller vehicle, and fuel and extras are still on you. They suit travellers with open schedules, particularly in the shoulder seasons, when companies need to reposition their fleets north or south.
Do not build a whole holiday around one, because they appear and disappear. But if you are flexible, it is worth checking the live offers. Compare the total cost with a standard one-way, and read the conditions carefully, particularly the kilometre limit and the maximum number of days.

Self-containment, automatics and what 111 vehicles tell us
The price page has a few facts about the vehicles that matter for a one-way. Ninety-two percent of the 111 vehicles in the search are automatic, which is good news if you do not drive manual. And 63 of the 111 are certified self-contained, which matters if you plan to freedom camp. Rules for freedom camping depend on the council and change over time, so check the current rules for each area. Our guide to New Zealand freedom camping rules has the details.
The basic cover on a New Zealand rental leaves a bond of NZ$1,000 to NZ$7,500 on your card. Counter-sold zero-excess cover costs NZ$30 to NZ$97 a day. On a three-week one-way, that can add NZ$600 to NZ$2,000, which is more than the one-way fee itself. So decide before you book what excess you are comfortable with.
The lowest typical base price in the search was Escape Rentals at NZ$73 a day, but the base price is only part of the story. Compare totals.
A sensible three-week route
A one-way from Auckland to Christchurch gives you a classic route. Start in Auckland and spend a few days in the north: the Coromandel, Rotorua and the Bay of Islands are the usual favourites. Our guide to Auckland campervan hire covers the options.
Then head south through Taupō and Tongariro to Wellington, cross the Cook Strait to Picton and drive through Marlborough and Nelson. On the South Island, the usual route follows the west coast past the glaciers to Queenstown, then loops east to Mount Cook and finishes in Christchurch via Kaikōura or Arthur’s Pass. Ten days is the minimum, and three weeks is comfortable.
If your trip is shorter, trim the North Island and start in Wellington, or fly to Christchurch and do the South Island only. The more you try to see, the more of the trip you will spend behind the wheel.
How to book and save €20
Open CampervanPlanet’s New Zealand page and enter Auckland as the pick-up and Christchurch as the drop-off. Compare the total price, not the daily rate, and check the excess, the deposit and the cancellation terms. If your dates are flexible, try shifting by a few days either side to find the cheapest week.
For December to February, book as early as you can. For March to May, you have more room to wait and watch. When you are ready, enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 at checkout for €20 off your booking.
