3 Nights in Bocas del Toro: A Casa Cayuco Minimum-Stay Plan

Casa Cayuco asks for a three-night minimum. Here is what three nights actually look like on Isla Bastimentos, which excursions fit, and when it is worth adding a night or two.

A three-night minimum can feel like a lot to ask on a Panama trip that already has flights, buses and boats in it. In practice, the arrival and departure days are short, so three nights gives you two full days. This plan is built from the lodge’s published schedule, inclusions and excursion list; it is our suggested shape for a short stay, not a record of a stay we have done.

Short answer

Three nights in Bocas del Toro at Casa Cayuco gives you two full days: one for a boat excursion such as the Zapatillas islands, one for the free things on the doorstep (kayaks, snorkelling, the Salt Creek village tour and the jungle trail). It works, but four or five nights is more relaxed. Book through our link at Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off.

Why there is a three-night minimum

Casa Cayuco is on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja at the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town. There is one scheduled boat transfer a day, included in your stay, so arrivals and departures are tied to that schedule. Check-in is at 3:00 pm and check-out at 12:30 pm. A stay of one or two nights would be mostly travelling, which is why the lodge sets three nights as the minimum.

Day 1: arrival afternoon

The lodge recommends Air Panama flight 980 from Panama City, landing in Bocas around 2:00 pm, when the captain meets you at the airport for the 2:00 pm pickup. The boat leaves the dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, and you arrive at the lodge in time for the afternoon snack, a first swim off the calm beach and a three-course dinner, perhaps at the big table on the dock.

Keep day one gentle. Settle into your room, borrow a kayak or paddle board (both are included) and ask the in-house guides to plan your two days. You do not need to book activities in advance; everything is arranged at check-in. Our post on the boat ride from Bocas Town explains the transfer.

Day 2: your big excursion

Use the first full day for one guided half-day trip. Prices below are per person, as listed on Casa Cayuco’s site in November 2026, and may change:

Isla Zapatillas, ten minutes by boat from Casa Cayuco – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama

  • Isla Zapatillas, half day ($80): two uninhabited islands in the national marine park, ten minutes by boat, with beaches and guided snorkelling.
  • Mangrove snorkelling, half day ($85): soft corals, sponges, octopus and starfish, 25 minutes from the dock, with dolphins sometimes seen.
  • Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour, half day ($70).
  • Sloth Creek, one hour ($40), a boat ride through the mangrove channels looking for sloths.

For most first-timers we would choose Zapatillas. Our Isla Zapatillas guide has more. Afternoons are free for the beach.

Day 3: the doorstep day

The second full day can cost nothing beyond your stay. The guided tour of Salt Creek village, a Ngäbe-Buglé community, is included with every booking and takes about two hours, with the boat transfer through the mangrove channel. Bring a little cash for crafts. Back at the lodge, snorkel gear, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and yoga mats are all included, and a jungle trail starts at the lodge if you want a walk (the Casa Cayuco Sendero is a two-hour loop listed at $25).

Departure morning

The boat back to Bocas leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm, which lines up with the recommended Air Panama flight 981 leaving Bocas around 2:30 pm. Early pick-ups are not available, so do not book an early flight. A private transfer at another time is possible for a fee. Have a slow breakfast, one last swim and pack.

Our Honest Final Word

Three nights works if you plan it: arrive for the afternoon snack, take one big excursion, use the free activities, and leave at lunchtime. If you are the sort who wants to do nothing for a day, add a night. Either way, it is a trip with all meals and the boat included, which is a big reason we partnered with Casa Cayuco.
