Rana vs Loro Lodge Suite: Which Casa Cayuco Room to Book
Both lodge suites sit inside the main building at Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos, but they feel very different. Here is how the Rana and the Loro compare, who each one suits, and which one we would book.

When people ask us where to stay in Bocas del Toro, the next question is almost always which room. The two lodge suites are the ones travellers mix up most, because they share a building and a lot of comforts. Everything here comes from Casa Cayuco’s own room pages and booking terms. We have not stayed there yet, so we describe what the lodge publishes and how we would choose.
Rana vs Loro Lodge Suite comes down to screens versus views: the Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama sleeps three and is fully screened in, while the Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama sleeps two, sits high in the canopy and has sea views and an open-air shower. For a couple who want the view, we would book the Loro; for a parent with one child, or anyone who wants a fully screened room, the Rana. Two lodge suites, one main building
Casa Cayuco Eco-Adventure Lodge sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja at the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, in Panama’s Bocas del Toro archipelago. Most rooms are separate bungalows and cabañas scattered through the garden. The two lodge suites are different: they are rooms inside the main lodge, close to the dining area, the bar, the library and the deck.

That position matters. You are a short walk from breakfast, from the lounge deck and from the dock, and you hear the lodge’s rhythm: the afternoon snack arriving, dinner being laid at the communal table. If you like being near the centre of things, a lodge suite is the right family of rooms. If you want to be tucked away on the beach or in the trees, look at the bungalows and the treetop cabaña instead.
Rana vs Loro at a glance
These are the facts the lodge publishes for each room. Rates are not published, so check live prices for your dates.
| Detail | Rana Lodge Suite | Loro Lodge Suite |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeps | 3 | 2 |
| Beds | 1 queen bed + 1 twin bed | 1 queen bed |
| Where | Main lodge, off a screened-in corridor | Main lodge, third floor, high in the canopy |
| Feel | Fully screened room | Sea views over the jungle, open-air shower area |
| Best for | Couples, or a parent with one child | Couples who want views and the lodge close by |
| Air conditioning | No, ceiling fan | No, ceiling fan |
Both rooms share the Casa Cayuco basics: an en-suite bathroom, organic coconut soap and hair care made in Bocas, a high-powered ceiling fan, a memory foam mattress, a mosquito net and high-speed wifi. Neither has air conditioning, because only the Estrella De Mar villa does.
The Rana Lodge Suite: the screened room
The Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama is the room we point to when someone says they love the idea of a jungle lodge but are nervous about bugs. It is fully screened, with a screened-in corridor in the main lodge, so you can leave things open to the night air without sharing the room with the wildlife.

It sleeps three, with a queen bed and a twin bed, which makes it the only lodge suite that works for a parent travelling with one child (the lodge accepts guests aged 5 and over). Couples like it too, particularly those who sleep badly when a mosquito net is the only barrier. Because it is in the main building, it also suits anyone who wants staff, food and the deck close at hand.
The honest trade-off: the Rana is practical rather than showy. If you want to lie in bed looking at the sea, read on.
The Loro Lodge Suite: the canopy room
The Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama is on the third floor of the main lodge, up in the canopy. The lodge describes sea views and an open-air shower area, and the photos show a seating corner and a jungle outlook from above the treetops. You wake up level with the birds rather than at ground level.

It is a room for two with a queen bed, so it works for couples who want the lodge close by and a view to match. Anniversary trips and honeymoons fit well here, and if you want a thatched bungalow on the beach instead, the Pelicano is the alternative we cover in our best room for couples guide.
The trade-off is the stairs. A third-floor room means climbing, so if anyone in your party finds stairs difficult, ask the lodge before booking.

Light sleepers, bugs and noise
Every Casa Cayuco room is open-air by design, so you will hear rain on the roof, frogs and the sea. That is part of the point. Because both suites are inside the main lodge, you are nearer the dining area than in a far-off bungalow, which is lovely at breakfast and slightly less quiet after dinner.
If bugs worry you, the Rana is our first choice because it is fully screened. We cover the screened rooms in more depth in our guide to Bocas del Toro lodges for people who dislike bugs. If you are a very light sleeper, our post on the best room for light sleepers compares the options.
Which suite should you book?
- Couple wanting a view: Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama.
- Parent with one child aged 5+: Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama, the only suite with a third bed.
- Nervous about bugs: Rana, because it is fully screened.
- Honeymoon or proposal: Loro for the canopy, or a beachfront bungalow if you want the sand at your door.
- A family of four or more: neither suite; look at the Tortuga, Delfín, Mono or Cangrejo instead.
Remember that both suites are inside the lodge, not on the sand. If a beachfront door is your priority, our lodge suite vs beachfront bungalow guide helps you decide.
What is included whichever room you choose
Casa Cayuco works almost like an all-inclusive. Included: the round-trip scheduled speedboat from Bocas Town, all meals (a chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and a three-course dinner), morning coffee and tea, sea kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats, a guided tour of Salt Creek village, daily housekeeping and 24/7 staff.
Not included: drinks, guided excursions, staff gratuities (the lodge suggests 12–15% of the stay), the 10% hotel tax on room charges and the 7% tax on excursions and drinks. The minimum stay is three nights and check-in is at 3:00 pm. Our prices explained post covers the extras.
