We work with words ourselves, and the question we ask of any place to write is simple: will I get work done, and will I want to come back? Casa Cayuco lists writers’ escapes among the groups it has hosted, and its library, quiet and daily rhythm suit it. We have not run a retreat there, so we describe only what the lodge publishes, and say clearly where we are guessing.
A writers’ retreat in Panama suits a remote island lodge with quiet, included meals and high-speed wifi, and Casa Cayuco in Bocas del Toro lists writers’ escapes among the groups it hosts. It has a guest library, a lounge, hammocks over the water and 24/7 electricity from solar power. Book through our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off.

What a writer needs from a retreat
Most writers who plan a retreat want the same short list: a quiet place to sit, a few hours without interruptions, food that does not need planning and a change of scenery big enough to shake loose a stuck draft. They also want the freedom to go online when they must, and to switch off when they can.

Casa Cayuco’s setting, a remote beach on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town, gives you distance by default. All meals are included, which removes a surprising amount of daily decision-making, and the lodge’s high-speed wifi means you can send a file to your editor without a detour.
Where you would actually write
The lodge offers more than one kind of working space. There is a guest library, a lounge with a sofa on the deck, hammocks over the water at the end of the dock and a covered porch outside most rooms. Some rooms feel made for writing: Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama sits high in the canopy on the main lodge’s third floor with Caribbean views and an open-air shower; Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama is a cosy, fully screened-in room on the second floor with views and sounds of the jungle canopy; Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama is the most private room, 40 feet up in the trees.

Bring a notebook and a small cushion for the dock, and a headlamp for evening walks to your room. Remember that the lodge is open-air, with rain on the roof at night and the sea always in the background, so a pair of earplugs is a good idea. We cover those details in our light-sleeper guide.
Wifi, power and working remotely
Every room has high-speed wifi, according to the lodge, and electricity runs 24/7 from solar power with Type A 110 V (US) outlets. That is enough for writing, editing and the occasional video call, but we would not promise broadcast-quality video from a rainforest. If you must be online, tell the lodge in advance and ask what to expect. We discuss the balance between connection and calm in our wifi and digital detox guide.
Our tip: decide on an online window each day, say an hour after breakfast, and use the rest of the day offline. The lodge makes it easy, because the afternoon snack arrives wherever you are and the dock is a lovely place to put the phone away.
Food, coffee and the daily rhythm
The day is shaped by meals: locally grown small-batch coffee and tea in the morning, a chef’s-choice breakfast, lunch, a snack in the afternoon and a three-course dinner at communal tables or on the dock. Cuisine is predominantly plant-based with fresh fish brought by cayuco every evening, plus coconut milk, nut butters and juices made in-house. If you are a writer who forgets to eat, this is a gift. If you have allergies or dietary needs, the kitchen can adapt, though it uses nuts and gluten.

Communal tables make it easy to meet other guests, and just as easy to excuse yourself to your porch. For more on meals, see our guide to the food.

Breaks that feed the writing
A good retreat includes movement. Kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats are included in the stay. The Salt Creek village tour is included too and gives writers something real to observe. Extra excursions, planned at check-in, include the Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop ($25), Sloth Creek ($40), Monkey Island ($70) and the Isla Zapatillas half day ($80). An in-house massage therapist is available, and there is a yoga deck. See our yoga and wellness guide.

We suggest a loose pattern: write in the morning, walk or paddle after lunch, read on the porch late in the day.
Running a group retreat
If you are a teacher or organiser, the lodge lists writers’ escapes among the groups it hosts, along with yoga and wellness retreats, research teams, multi-day kayak trips and milestone celebrations. It accommodates up to 53 guests, a group of 30 or more can reserve the whole lodge and groups of 20 or more can get discounted per-person rates by custom quote. Ask the lodge about workshop space, quiet hours and any equipment you need, because its pages do not describe a dedicated workshop room. Our group accommodation guide has more on booking.
Who this is not for
If you write best in a city café with endless coffee refills, a remote lodge may feel quiet to the point of discomfort. If you need air conditioning to concentrate, only the villa has it. If you need a desk and a monitor, this is not a conventional co-working space. And note the three-night minimum, the age limit of five and up and the 30–35 minute boat ride from Bocas Town. See our Where to stay in Panama page for alternatives.
A sample writing week
This is how we would structure a five-night stay for a solo writer or a small group. It is our suggestion, not an official lodge programme.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Fly to Bocas | Boat to the lodge, settle in, short swim | Dinner on the dock, set the week’s goals |
| Day 2 | Write in the library | Salt Creek village tour (included) | Read on the porch |
| Day 3 | Write on the dock | Kayak or paddle board | Group reading, if travelling together |
| Day 4 | Sendero jungle loop | Edit in a hammock | Quiet dinner |
| Day 5 | Final push | Snorkel, massage or yoga | Farewell dinner |
| Departure | Pack and breakfast | Boat around 12:30 pm | Fly home |
Adjust it to your pace and the weather. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, according to the lodge, so mornings are usually reliable for writing outdoors on a covered porch.

Our Honest Final Word
The best writing retreats are boring in the right way: a table, a view, a meal at the right time and nothing else asking for your attention. A remote Caribbean lodge gives you that, plus a sloth or two to watch when you stall.
