Getting Married in Rovaniemi in February: Deep Snow, Stable Ice and the Light Coming Back

February is the month when Lapland’s winter is at its most dependable: deep snow, solid ice and the light returning. We run Rovaniemi Weddings, our own company, and we plan weddings and elopements for travellers every winter. Here is what a February wedding looks like, where it works best, what it costs in broad terms and what to prepare.

Short answer

February is one of the best months for a winter wedding in Rovaniemi: the deepest snow, the most stable ice and strong chances of northern lights, with the light slowly returning. The Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos hosts ceremonies from 15 December to 31 March, glass igloos suit small groups, and Silver Birch Resort offers a lakeside option. A February wedding needs 6–12 months of planning, an examination of impediments to marriage if you want it legal (about €60, around seven working days) and a realistic plan for the cold. Why February Works So Well

Lapland’s winter runs from November to early April, and each part has its own character. November and December bring the deepest polar night and candle-lit atmosphere; March and April bring longer days and sunshine on snow. February sits between them, and in our experience it gives the most reliable “winter wonderland”: the deepest snow, temperatures that can go down to −30 °C, and a returning blue-and-pink twilight that photographs beautifully.

It is also a very good month for the Ice Chapel and the northern lights. Ice hotels near Rovaniemi are at their most stable in January and February, and the aurora is visible roughly 200 nights a year in the region, best from September to March. We cannot promise the lights on any one night, but a February trip of several days gives you a real chance. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and we have been planning around the Arctic cold long enough to say clearly what works and what does not.

A February wedding also has a quality that is hard to describe on a page: it is quiet. Snow absorbs sound, the light is low and blue, and the people who come to Lapland in February come on purpose. Guests who have travelled this far tend to be present in a way that is rare at a wedding closer to home, and many couples say that is the feeling they remember most.

The Ice Chapel in February

The Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos in Sinettä, about 30 minutes from Rovaniemi, is carved by hand from snow and crystal-clear ice, with candlelight glowing through the walls, reindeer hides on the benches and an altar of ice. It seats around 30–50 guests, with standing room at the back, and ceremonies are possible from 15 December to 31 March while the snow hotel stands. Inside it is around −5 °C, cold but sheltered from wind. Ceremonies usually last 20–30 minutes, and the reception moves to a warm restaurant or a kota with an open fire nearby.

For the guest list, it means this: a short, candle-lit ceremony in a dramatic place, then warmth, food and a toast. If you only want the two of you, the same chapel works for an elopement; we will tell you honestly whether the day suits a group or a couple. We style it using high-quality artificial and preserved flowers suited to Arctic conditions, because fresh petals freeze at −30 °C. See Ice Hotel Wedding in Lapland for a fuller picture of the day.

Four Settings for a February Wedding

  • The Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel. For ceremonies of up to 30–50 guests, with dinner in the Ice Restaurant, the Kota restaurant around an open fire or the Log Restaurant. Glass igloos for accommodation are open from 1 September to 31 March.
  • Glass igloo and kota elopements. See Igloo Wedding in Lapland and Elopement in Lapland for two-person and very small days.
  • Silver Birch Resort. A lakeside resort about 20 km from Rovaniemi, around 30 minutes from the airport, with a restaurant for up to 36 guests seated. Weddings are possible January–April and June–December, and in winter there is a minimum stay of two nights. Venue hire until midnight starts from €799.
  • Arcticmint Villa. A lakeside villa on Lake Norvajärvi, about 20 minutes from the city centre, for a wedding of around 15 guests; it sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms.

The right setting depends on guest count first, and then on how much cold your guests will tolerate. For a comparison see Lapland Wedding Venues.

A Realistic February Timeline

Daylight decides everything. In February the light has started to return but is still limited, so ceremonies tend to be placed in the middle of the day or in the twilight. A typical day:

TimeWhat happens
MorningHair, make-up, bouquets and breakfast in a warm room
Late morningPhotographs outside while light is best; warm coats, short sessions
Midday or early afternoonCeremony in the Ice Chapel, 20–30 minutes
AfternoonToast, group photos, dinner in a restaurant or kota
EveningDancing or a quiet evening; aurora hunt if the sky allows

The exact times are fixed with the venue and your photographer; see our post on wedding photography in Lapland for how light and cold shape the timeline.

What a February Wedding Costs, in Broad Terms

The cost guide on our own site gives broad ranges: €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €30,000 or more for a larger celebration, with €10,000–€20,000 typical for a beautifully styled event of 20–50 guests. Within that: a cabin or glass-igloo day for an intimate group €500–€1,500; a hotel or resort event space €2,000–€8,000; a full styling package €1,500–€5,000, or around €800 for elopement styling; photography for a full day €1,500–€4,000; a sit-down dinner €50–€150 per person for 20–50 guests. We suggest a contingency fund of around 10%.

These are guide ranges, not a quote; a detailed custom quote follows a consultation, with no hidden fees. Making It Legal: The Paperwork in Winter

Finland allows foreign nationals to marry; there is no residency requirement and no waiting period. You apply for an examination of impediments to marriage through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, which typically takes about seven working days and can extend to several weeks for international applicants. The fee is around €60. You will need a valid passport each, a certificate of no impediment issued by your home country, and in some cases a birth certificate, plus a divorce decree or death certificate if you were married before. Documents must be translated into Finnish, Swedish or English by a certified translator, and some countries require an apostille.

Start at least three to four months before a February date. A civil ceremony is performed by a district court judge or another authorised official at virtually any location, in English if needed. Many couples complete the legal steps at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Lapland. See our guide to getting married in Finland as a foreigner for a full guide.

Dressing for −20 °C

Outdoor ceremonies are kept brief, typically 15–20 minutes, with warm spaces nearby. Fire pits, blankets and heated drinks are provided. Practical tips: thermal layers under the dress or suit, warm boots with a good sole, a fur or faux-fur wrap, gloves for photographs. For what guests wear see what to wear in Lapland in winter. Heated spaces for changing and warming up are part of the plan; we do not do a ceremony without a place to go afterwards.

Honest Caveats of a February Wedding

It is cold. That is the whole point and the whole difficulty. Guests who are not used to it will need to be told what to wear; elderly guests and young children need extra planning; flights and transfers can be disrupted by snow. February is in the high-demand winter window, and Ice Chapel dates and glass igloos book out. On the other hand, there is no rain in Lapland in winter; falling snow is part of the scene, and we bring clear umbrellas for it.

How to Plan It With Us, Step by Step

A wedding is a longer conversation than a proposal, and this is how we work from first message to the day.

  1. Weeks before: tell us the story. How you met, what matters to them, how you want the moment to feel. We suggest the option that fits, or shape a custom one — start at Proposals in Lapland or write to us through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings.
  2. Within a few days: option and quote. One clear quote with nothing hidden, your date held, and the exact place and timing fine-tuned together.
  3. The days before: quiet preparation. Flowers, candles, photographer, transport, sparkling wine and the weather plan are all confirmed.
  4. The hour: the moment. We set up while you are on your way and step out of sight; you walk them in, the yes happens, we capture it and quietly pack down.

Start 6–12 months ahead for a winter wedding. We reply within one business day.
