Australians call the drive between their two biggest east-coast cities a classic, and a Sydney to Brisbane campervan trip is easy to see why. The road runs along the coast for most of its length, passing surf beaches, river estuaries, rainforest and a string of towns that are each worth a night. It is also one of the easiest one-way campervan routes in the country, because Sydney and Brisbane are both major depots with plenty of vans.
We built this guide from the CampervanPlanet Sydney and Brisbane listings and common Australian road rules, and we flag where you should check details. We have not driven this route in a rented campervan, so please read it as a researched planning guide. If you are new to hiring a van, our our campervan rental guide is a good place to start.
The Sydney to Brisbane drive is about 900 km on the Pacific Highway and the M1, and a relaxed trip takes 7 to 10 days. When we checked, CampervanPlanet listed campervan hire in Sydney from A$75 a day for 10 November 2026, with typical prices of A$189 a day in winter and A$205 in summer across 57 vehicles from 11 companies. A one-way fee usually applies and depends on the route and season, so compare the total price. Summer brings heat, storms and school-holiday crowds, so book early.
Sydney to Brisbane at a glance
The distance is roughly 900 km by the most direct route, which you could drive in about 10 to 11 hours. A campervan trip is about slowing that down. Most people take between a week and ten days, with a night or two in the places they like most. The road is mostly a dual carriageway these days, which makes the driving easier than it was a generation ago, but you still need to allow for traffic around the cities and for roadworks in places.
The trip also works well in reverse, and many travellers do both directions on separate trips. The main thing to decide is where you want to spend your time: the beaches near Port Stephens, the coffee and bananas of Coffs Harbour, the hippy-chic of Byron Bay or the Gold Coast’s high-rises. We suggest a flexible plan of one long driving day, then a series of shorter ones.
As a sanity check, driving no more than four or five hours a day keeps the trip relaxed and leaves time for swimming, walking and a proper dinner. Australian drivers are generally patient, but the fatigue risk on long highway days is real.
What it costs: hire, one-way fee and running costs
On the CampervanPlanet Sydney page the cheapest campervan for a 7-night hire from the Sydney depot was A$75 a day for 10 November 2026, and A$89 a day for 9 March 2027. The page also listed typical prices of A$189 a day in winter and A$205 in summer, with 57 vehicles from 11 companies. The Brisbane page showed the cheapest vehicle from A$78 a day for 10 November 2026. Those are prices for the cheapest vehicle on the cheapest dates, so expect more in the school holidays and over Christmas and New Year.
The page also says that many companies allow one-way trips between depots, that a one-way fee usually applies, and that it depends on the route and the season. Our one-way fee guide explains how this works. The simplest way to see the real cost is to search with Sydney as the pick-up and Brisbane as the drop-off on the CampervanPlanet Sydney page, which shows the offers for that exact route.
- Fuel: Australia sells fuel by the litre, and a campervan typically uses 9 to 13 litres per 100 km. For 900 km, that is a few hundred Australian dollars.
- Campsites: holiday parks charge per night, often with a premium in school holidays. Powered sites cost more than unpowered ones.
- Tolls: there are toll roads around Sydney and Brisbane, and the Sydney to Brisbane corridor has some. Our Australia campervan cost guide covers the extras, and check how your rental company handles tolls.
Stop by stop: Sydney to Port Macquarie
Leave Sydney early to avoid traffic, and head north over the Hawkesbury River. If you want a gentle first night, Port Stephens is a favourite, with sand dunes, dolphins and calm bays about two and a half hours from the city. Newcastle is also an easy stop, with surf beaches and a good coffee scene.
Further north, the lakes and beaches around Forster and Tuncurry are quiet and relaxed, and Port Macquarie has a coastal walk, a koala hospital and a choice of beaches. Our Sydney campervan guide has more ideas near the city if you want to add a day in the Hunter Valley before you head north.

Coffs Harbour, Yamba and Byron Bay
Around Coffs Harbour the mountains come close to the sea. Bellingen, a short drive inland, is a pretty village with markets, and the national parks nearby have waterfalls and short rainforest walks. In the north of the state, Yamba and the Clarence River are quieter than Byron Bay, with excellent beaches and a smaller crowd.
Byron Bay is the star for many people. The lighthouse walk, the beaches and the town’s cafes make it a favourite stop, but it is also busy and parking for larger vehicles can be hard. In peak season, book a campsite ahead and arrive early in the day. If you want a quieter alternative, the villages in the hills behind the coast offer a slower pace.
Do not underestimate how long it takes to do very little. A beach day, a coastal walk and a sunset dinner will quickly fill an afternoon, and that is the point of a campervan trip. If you plan to extend north later, our Brisbane to Cairns guide picks up where this route ends.
The Gold Coast and finishing in Brisbane
Crossing into Queensland brings you to the Gold Coast, a strip of high-rise towers, surf beaches and theme parks. It is not to everyone’s taste, but the beaches are excellent, and the hinterland behind it, with the Lamington National Park and its rainforest walks, is a fine contrast. A night in the hinterland is a good way to break the journey.
The final leg to Brisbane is short. Allow time to clean the van, refuel and return it, and plan to arrive well before the depot closes. The Brisbane page lists 57 vehicles from 11 companies and typical prices of A$190 a day in winter and A$203 in spring when we looked, so if you plan to keep travelling after the drop-off, consider whether another pick-up in the city makes sense.
Return times are strict at many depots, and late returns can cost extra. Ask about opening hours, especially on Sundays and public holidays, before you book your flight home.
Summer: heat, storms, school holidays and camping
Our trip window is summer in the southern hemisphere, which runs from December to February. Days are hot and humid in the north of the route, afternoon storms are common in Queensland, and school holidays from late December through January fill campsites and push prices up. Book ahead for the best campsites and consider shorter driving days so you avoid the hottest hours.
- Heat: air conditioning in the cab matters more than any gadget, and many campervans have none in the living area, so ask before you book. Carry plenty of water.
- Wildlife: kangaroos and wallabies are most active at dawn and dusk, so avoid driving then outside towns.
- Camping rules: free camping is limited and rules vary by council, so read the signs and use holiday parks if you are unsure. See our Australia freedom camping guide for the detail.
- Driving side: Australians drive on the left, and the speed limit on highways is usually 100 or 110 km/h.
Booking tips for a one-way Sydney to Brisbane hire
Start by comparing prices for your exact dates. A one-way route between two big depots is one of the cheaper ones, but the fee still varies, so look at the total rather than the daily rate. On the CampervanPlanet Sydney page you can compare all the rental brands for your route, and every booking comes with a free 1GB eSIM.
Check the cancellation terms, the insurance excess, the mileage allowance and the cleaning charges. If you will arrive in Brisbane late, ask about the drop-off cut-off time. Code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout when you book through our links, and a booking within 30 days of your click is credited to us. If you are comparing both ends, the Brisbane page shows what is available there.
