One-Way RV Rental in Canada: Vancouver to Calgary Through the Rockies

A one-way RV rental in Canada from Vancouver to Calgary is the clean way to cross the mountains: you start at the Pacific coast, climb through the Fraser Valley and the Columbia ranges, and finish in the Rockies without wasting three days driving back. The catch is that one-way trips cost more and the Rockies are busy in summer, so planning matters.

We live in Rovaniemi, so this is a researched guide rather than a trip report. We have read the live data on CampervanPlanet’s Canada RV page (prices from its October 2026 booking engine) and added stable local knowledge about the route, so you can plan a summer 2027 trip.

Short Answer

CampervanPlanet lists six Canadian pick-up points, including Vancouver and Calgary. In its October 2026 search the cheapest RV for seven nights started at about C$197 a day on 8 June 2027, with a Standard RV from C$235 a day and a Family RV from C$251 a day. Winter is a limited RV season. Our reader coupon HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout.

Why Vancouver to Calgary suits a one-way trip

The Trans-Canada Highway between Vancouver and Calgary is about 970 km in a straight run, and it passes through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in North America: the Fraser Canyon, the Okanagan side roads, Rogers Pass in the Selkirks, Yoho and the Rockies. Doing it as a loop would waste days, so one-way is the sensible choice if you have a week or ten days.

It also lets you choose the direction. Going west to east, you end in the Rockies with the best scenery fresh in memory. Going east to west, you finish with the coast, a ferry and a city. Both work, and the availability and price can differ by direction, so run the search both ways for your dates before you decide.

If you only have time for a Rockies circuit, our guide to Calgary RV rental and the Icefields Parkway covers the round-trip version.

How one-way RV rental works

On most routes the rental company charges a one-way fee, either included in the daily rate or shown as a separate charge before you pay, because it has to bring the vehicle back to its original depot. The fee is shown in the offer and again on your voucher, so check it before you compare totals. Some offers include a limited number of kilometres, so read the mileage terms too.

CampervanPlanet’s Canada page lists pick-up in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Edmonton, and the search tool shows which drop-off cities are available for your dates. Availability depends on the season, because companies usually need vehicles to flow back from busy depots. Our guide to one-way fees and drop-off charges explains how the charges work in general.

For other vehicles in the same country, see Vancouver RV rental and Calgary RV rental, which list pick-up details for each city.

A 7 to 10 day route

Vancouver to Kamloops (days 1 to 2)

Leave Vancouver early, follow the Trans-Canada north through the Fraser Canyon, and stop at Hell’s Gate or Hope. The Fraser Canyon is dramatic and the road is good. Kamloops is a practical overnight with large campgrounds and supermarkets.

Kamloops to Revelstoke and Golden (days 3 to 4)

Continue east to Shuswap Lake, then Revelstoke, with the Selkirk Mountains and Rogers Pass, one of Canada’s great mountain highways. In summer, watch for road works and check conditions before you cross the pass. Golden is a good base for Yoho National Park, where Emerald Lake and the Natural Bridge are short walks.

Golden to Banff and Calgary (days 5 to 7)

Cross into Banff National Park, where Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are the headline stops. Moraine Lake in particular is accessed by shuttle in many seasons, so check the current access rules. Finish with Banff and Canmore, then drive the remaining 130 km to Calgary. If you have extra days, add the Icefields Parkway to Jasper, which CampervanPlanet maps as a 5 to 7 day, 400 km route best in June and September.

When to go and what it costs

CampervanPlanet’s seasonal notes say spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) are the best times for an RV in Canada, with summer (July to August) the peak, and winter (November to March) a limited RV season that needs winter driving skills. In its October 2026 booking-engine search, the cheapest vehicle for seven nights on 8 June 2027 started from about C$197 a day, and a winter hire on 10 November 2026 or 9 March 2027 started from about C$157 a day.

The page lists four vehicle types: Compact RV, Standard RV from about C$235 a day, Family RV from about C$251 a day, and Premium RV, with prices that change with the date. For a first Rockies trip, we would aim for June or September: long days, open parks, lower rates than July and August and fewer queues for lakes and viewpoints. Our Canada RV rental cost guide gives a fuller breakdown.

Parks passes, campgrounds and wildlife

Banff, Yoho and Jasper are national parks, and you need a Parks Canada pass to stop in them, with daily or annual options. Buy it online before you go or at the park gate. Campgrounds in the Rockies are reservable through Parks Canada and fill up early for July and August, so book as soon as the reservation window opens. Private campgrounds, which usually have full hook-ups, are easier to find at short notice but cost more.

Wildlife is part of the trip. Bears, elk and moose are common, so keep food stored securely, follow park rules and keep your distance. Wildfire smoke can affect parts of British Columbia and Alberta in summer, so keep a flexible plan and check road conditions. Canadians drive on the right and fuel is sold by the litre, with long distances between towns in some stretches.

How to book well

Book the vehicle first, then the campgrounds. Compare at least three brands in the CampervanPlanet search for the same dates, in both directions, and check the one-way fee, the mileage and the excess before you pay. Our our campervan rental guide explains the comparison, and the main Canada RV rental page lists all six pick-up cities.
