Most first-time visitors to New Zealand are pulled towards the South Island, but the North Island quietly has the better-value road trip. It has geothermal valleys, glow-worm caves, active volcanoes, warm beaches, Māori culture and a capital city that punches well above its size. And the classic way to join it up is a one-way drive from Auckland to Wellington.
The direct drive on State Highway 1 is around 640 km and takes about eight hours, but nobody should do it that way. We have planned a seven-day version below. We are writing from Rovaniemi, so treat this as a researched guide built from the live prices on CampervanPlanet and our reading of the route, not a diary of a trip we drove ourselves. You can start your own comparison on the Auckland campervan page, and code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout.
A one-way Auckland to Wellington route works well in 7 days: Waitomo, Rotorua, Taupō, Tongariro, then south to Wellington. On CampervanPlanet the cheapest Auckland campervan is from NZ$33/day, with typical prices around NZ$165 a day in winter and NZ$369 in summer, so shoulder seasons are the sweet spot. Check the one-way fee and the ferry plans before you book.
Why one-way Auckland to Wellington makes sense
Driving a loop from Auckland means retracing your steps, which wastes days. Driving to Wellington instead gives you a natural finish: you drop the van in the capital, spend a night or two in its museums, cafés and waterfront, and fly onwards or cross the Cook Strait to the South Island. Auckland and Wellington are both major rental hubs, so one-way offers between them are common. CampervanPlanet shows the terms on each offer, including one-way fees and what is paid locally, so read that carefully.
Auckland itself is easy to start from. The CampervanPlanet page lists more than ten rental fleets there, with downtown depots within walking distance of Queen Street and airport pick-up. For the capital end, see our Wellington campervan hire page.
Day by day
Day 1: Auckland to Waitomo (about 200 km)
Pick up the van in the morning, buy supplies, and drive south through the Waikato farmland. The Waitomo Caves, with their ceilings of glowworms, are the first big stop. A boat ride through the dark cave is one of those experiences you remember for years.
Day 2: Waitomo to Rotorua (about 160 km)
On the way, stop at Hobbiton near Matamata if you are a Tolkien fan. Rotorua smells of sulphur and steams from the pavement, and the Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu geothermal areas show the earth boiling. Soak in a hot pool in the evening. Our guide to Auckland campervan hire with Coromandel, Bay of Islands and Rotorua has more on the area.
Day 3: Rotorua to Taupō (about 85 km)
A short drive south brings you to Lake Taupō, a flooded volcano crater the size of Singapore. Visit the Huka Falls, take a boat to the Māori rock carvings, and park at one of the lakeside campsites.
Day 4: Tongariro (about 100 km)
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a famous 19–20 km day walk across volcanic terrain. It needs good weather, proper footwear and shuttle bookings, and is closed or hazardous in winter conditions. If you do not fancy it, shorter walks in the national park, such as to Taranaki Falls, are lovely too.
Day 5: Tongariro to Whanganui or Napier (about 200 km)
Choose your own branch. West towards Whanganui and the river, or east to Napier and Hawke’s Bay for art deco architecture and wineries. The Hawke’s Bay road adds a day but is a good extension.
Days 6–7: to Wellington (about 200–330 km)
Drive south through Palmerston North and along the Kāpiti Coast to the capital. Return the van or hand it in at the depot, and spend the final evening on the waterfront. Te Papa, the national museum, is free and excellent.
What the campervan costs
CampervanPlanet’s Auckland page shows the cheapest campervan from NZ$33/day, with 107 vehicles from 23 companies in the price index. The typical price is the figure that matters: roughly NZ$165 a day in winter and NZ$369 a day in summer. That gap is large, and it explains why timing is the single biggest lever in your budget.
- Peak summer (December to February): the most expensive and the busiest. Book months ahead, especially around Christmas and New Year.
- Autumn and spring: the sweet spot for weather and price. March and April bring settled weather and fewer crowds.
- Winter (June to August): the cheapest rates, but cold nights in the central plateau and snow on the volcanoes.
For a nationwide view, our New Zealand campervan rental prices page lays out the monthly pattern. Remember that the cheapest listed price is only for the smallest vehicle, and that insurance excess, extras and one-way fees come on top.

Freedom camping and campsites
New Zealand is famous for freedom camping, but the rules have tightened. In many areas you may only stay overnight in a certified self-contained vehicle, which means it has a toilet, a water supply and waste storage. Local councils have their own rules and fines for illegal camping, so check signs and apps before you park for the night. Holiday parks and Department of Conservation campsites are generally the easier option.
Prices for a powered site at a holiday park often run NZ$40–70 a night in peak season, and conservation campsites are cheaper. Book the popular ones in summer, particularly around Taupō and Tongariro.
Driving tips for the North Island
- Drive on the left and expect narrow, winding roads. Distances look short on the map and take longer on the ground.
- Allow plenty of time. A 100 km drive can take two hours on twisty roads, particularly in a loaded campervan.
- Check the weather. It can change fast in the central plateau, and high winds affect tall vehicles on exposed roads.
- Keep the tank topped up in rural areas, where stations can be sparse and close early.
Our campervan rental guide explains how deposits, insurance and pick-up usually work, which applies in New Zealand as anywhere else.
Extending to the South Island
Wellington is also the departure point for the Cook Strait ferry to Picton. If you want to combine both islands, you can drop the van in Wellington and pick up a new one in Picton, rather than paying to take a rental across the strait. Not all rental companies allow vehicles on the ferry, and the rules vary, so check the terms on the offer. Our Wellington campervan hire guide explains the ferry in more detail.
