Adelaide is often the forgotten start for an Australian campervan trip, which is a shame, because South Australia has a lot going for it: wine country on the doorstep, quiet beaches on the Fleurieu Peninsula, whales at Victor Harbor in winter, Kangaroo Island’s wildlife and the red-rock ranges of the north. If you are searching for campervan hire in Adelaide, this guide covers price, season and route.
To be upfront: we are a Finnish couple who write about campervan travel from Rovaniemi, so this is a researched guide rather than a diary of our own South Australia trip. The prices and seasonal notes come from the Adelaide campervan hire page on CampervanPlanet, which we checked in November 2026, and we flag anything that can change.
Southern Hemisphere summer is arriving, which for Adelaide means hot, dry weather. We will explain how that changes a trip, and why many people prefer the shoulder months.
In the CampervanPlanet booking engine the cheapest campervan for seven nights from Adelaide showed from A$91 a day for November 2026, A$88 for March 2027 and A$69 for June 2027. Winter (June to August) is the budget season and also the best for whale watching, while summer can pass 35°C. Plan for wine country, Kangaroo Island and the Flinders Ranges, and always check what your rental contract allows.
What campervan hire in Adelaide costs
The Adelaide page checks the cheapest vehicle for a seven-night hire from the city. For a pick-up on 10 November 2026 it showed from A$91 a day. For 9 March 2027 it showed from A$88 a day, and for 8 June 2027 from A$69 a day. The pattern is clear: winter is the budget season, and spring and autumn sit in the middle.
As ever, these are the cheapest vehicles, usually small two-berth vans, so a family-sized campervan or motorhome will cost more. Remember the extras too, such as a second driver, bedding, a kitchen kit, one-way fees and fuel. Distances in South Australia are long, and fuel is a real part of the bill.

The best time to hire a campervan in Adelaide
- December to February (summer). Hot, dry and sunny at roughly 26 to 32°C, with heatwave days that can pass 35°C. It is great for beaches on the Fleurieu Peninsula and for the Adelaide Fringe Festival in February and March, and wine country is in full swing. Heat means early starts and plenty of water.
- March to May (autumn). The page calls autumn the transition into the best season: drier, cooler, and good for exploring South Australia’s interior and coast. Easter brings some crowds, but campgrounds are quieter than in summer and prices are reasonable.
- June to August (winter). Mild and pleasant at 8 to 16°C, with whale watching at Victor Harbor, hiking on Mount Lofty and cosy cellar door tastings in the Barossa. Lower rental prices make this a great budget season, although some outback tracks may be muddy after rain.
- September to November (spring). Warming days and wildflowers. Southern right whales come close to shore at Victor Harbor from June to September, and the weather is typically stable.
Our own pick would be March to May or September and October: warm enough, quieter, and without the heat of January.
Route one: Adelaide Hills, Barossa and the Fleurieu

This is the easiest first loop and works in any season. Head east into the Adelaide Hills for villages and orchards, continue north-east to the Barossa Valley for cellar doors and long lunches, then swing back south via the Fleurieu Peninsula and Victor Harbor. You can do it in three or four days at a relaxed pace.
In winter, add whale watching at Victor Harbor, where southern right whales come close to shore. In summer, the Fleurieu’s beaches are the reward. Wine country is easy to enjoy responsibly in a campervan if you plan your driving carefully: book tastings in the morning, stay near the cellar doors, and leave the driving for the next day.
Most campgrounds in the region take bookings, and the popular ones fill at weekends and during school holidays. Book ahead if your dates include a public holiday.

Route two: Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is the wildlife highlight of South Australia, with sea lions, koalas, kangaroos and rugged coastline. It is reached by vehicle ferry from Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Here is the crucial point for renters: many rental agreements restrict taking a vehicle onto an island or on a ferry, so ask the rental company in writing before you plan the trip. If it is not allowed, you can leave your van at the mainland and join a tour, or hire a car on the island.
If it is allowed, book your ferry well ahead for summer, and allow at least two nights. Distances on the island are bigger than they look, and some roads are unsealed. Keep to the speed limit, particularly at dusk, because wildlife on the road is a hazard.
Our rule on islands is the same everywhere: check the contract first, and do not assume that the cheapest option is the best. For a similar island idea in Australia, our guide to Tasmania campervan hire covers a destination where the vehicle goes on the ferry.
Route three: the Flinders Ranges and the north
North of Adelaide, the landscape opens up. The Flinders Ranges are ancient, red and dramatic, with gorges, hiking trails and wide skies. A trip from Adelaide takes a long day to reach the southern ranges, so plan for at least three or four nights. The sealed roads are fine for a standard campervan, but side tracks are often unsealed and may be off limits under your rental contract.
If you want to go further, consider a vehicle built for it. CampervanPlanet lists dedicated pages for 4WD camper hire in Adelaide for travellers who want to venture beyond the sealed road. Always read the contract on unsealed roads and remote areas, and travel with extra water, food and fuel. Mobile coverage can be limited.
Summer is hot in this region, and temperatures can be extreme. Autumn and spring are the best times for hiking, and winter is cool and clear.
Adelaide to Melbourne, one-way
A classic Australian road trip links Adelaide and Melbourne along the Limestone Coast and the Great Ocean Road. It is a long drive, so give it at least five to seven days. A one-way hire usually carries a fee, so compare it with the cost of flying back or returning the vehicle.
Direction can affect the price, because rental companies reposition vehicles in the direction demand is lowest, and dates around school holidays are more expensive. Search both directions, and flex your dates by a few days if you can. Our guide to the Great Ocean Road by campervan covers the other half of the route in detail.
Whichever way you drive, leave time for the small stops. The Limestone Coast has caves, lakes and seafood towns, and the Great Ocean Road has a reputation for a reason.
Our verdict on Adelaide campervan hire
Adelaide is a relaxed, good-value starting point. Winter is cheapest, spring and autumn are the sweet spots, and summer is for beach people who can handle the heat. Check island and unsealed-road rules before you build the plan, and consider a one-way trip to Melbourne if you have the time.
