For a winter visit, the first fifteen rows are the ones that matter. The two summer-only tours are there so the table is complete.
Per Person or Per Group — What the Price Basis Means
Tromsø operators use two different pricing models, and reading them wrong is the most common budgeting mistake we see. A per-person price is one seat on a shared departure: you book two seats for two people and share the vehicle and guide with up to six others. Legendary Adventure caps shared groups at eight, which is small by Tromsø standards — the cheaper end of the market is a 50-seat coach.
A per-group price is for the whole thing: vehicle, guide and departure are yours, and the price is the same whether two or eight of you turn up. That is why a private northern lights night “costs” NOK 15,000 — it is not NOK 15,000 each. The private tours are listed as 2–8 guests with larger groups on request, so to compare with a shared tour you divide by your party.
A third category is not in the table: premium private experiences arranged by contacting the operator rather than booked online. We cover those further down, because that is where the big numbers live.
What Is Included — So You Can Compare Fairly
A NOK 1,500 tour and a NOK 2,300 tour are not the same product, and the difference is usually in what is bundled. Here is what the operator lists for the main winter tours, so you can price like for like. Where a tour’s page lists nothing specific, we say so rather than assume.
| Tour | Transport | Clothing / equipment | Food and drink |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Lights Tour | Premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, local expert guide | Winter suit | Warm meal, snacks and hot drinks |
| Aurora Snowshoe Hike | Mercedes minivan, local expert guide | Snowshoe rental | Snacks and a hot drink |
| Arctic Snowshoe Hike | Transfer included in the 4 hours | Snowshoes and poles (per the tour description) | Not listed |
| Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour | Guided drive with scenic stops | Not listed | Arctic lunch at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, vegan and vegetarian options (per the tour description) |
| Private tours (all) | Private vehicle and guide, your own pickup address | Not listed — ask when booking | Not listed — ask when booking |
Read that way, the Northern Lights Tour’s NOK 2,300 covers a 5–8 hour evening, an outer layer you would otherwise rent, and dinner. The Sommarøy day’s NOK 2,100 covers 5–6 hours and a restaurant lunch by the sea. The two NOK 1,500 snowshoe hikes are cheaper because they are shorter, stay closer to town and leave the clothing to you — not because they are lesser experiences. Boots are never included, and the shared departures all leave from one fixed point, outside Clarion Hotel The Edge on the harbour.
The Private-Tour Maths for Families and Groups
Take the per-group price, divide by your party, and compare with the shared per-person price. For the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15,000 against the shared Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 2,300:

| People in your group | Private per person | Shared per person | Cheaper option |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | NOK 7,500 | NOK 2,300 | Shared |
| 4 | NOK 3,750 | NOK 2,300 | Shared, unless you want your own vehicle |
| 6 | NOK 2,500 | NOK 2,300 | Almost equal — private wins on flexibility |
| 7 | NOK 2,143 | NOK 2,300 | Private |
| 8 | NOK 1,875 | NOK 2,300 | Private, clearly |
The same logic applies to the NOK 12,000 private snowshoe hikes against the NOK 1,500 shared ones: break-even is exactly eight people, and at six you pay NOK 2,000 each for a private guide. The Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15,000 against the NOK 2,100 shared day breaks even at eight (NOK 1,875 each).
What the maths does not show is what you buy beyond the seat: your own pickup address, a start when your group is ready, and on a northern lights night the freedom to go home when your children are done rather than when eight strangers are. The private tours are also the ones listed as “all ages” where the shared versions are recommended for 7 or 10 and up. For a family of four with a six-year-old, the shared chase is not really an option, and NOK 3,750 a head is the price of doing it at all. We think it is worth it; you should simply know that is the choice you are making.

The Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 1,500 per person is the lowest-priced way to go looking for the lights with a guide. It picks up at 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, lasts four hours, and includes the guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, snowshoe rental, snacks and a hot drink. Groups are 2–8, recommended age 10 and up. You walk on snowshoes to a dark viewpoint away from the city glow and wait for the sky.

Why is it NOK 800 cheaper than the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5? Because it does not chase. The minibus chase burns fuel and hours driving to wherever the forecast says the sky is open, sometimes to the Finnish border and back, with a winter suit and a warm meal thrown in. The snowshoe hike stays near Tromsø, so your odds depend on the weather over the coast that night. On a clear night it is, for us, the nicer experience — silent, on foot, no engine. On a cloudy night the chase is the one that still has a chance.
So the honest advice is not “book the cheap one”. With one night, pay for the chase. With two, check the cloud forecast the day before, do the snowshoe hike on the clearer night and keep the chase for the other. With the code, the hike is NOK 1,425 and the chase NOK 2,185.
The Best-Value Day: Sommarøy & Kvaløya
If we had to name one tour in Tromsø where the price feels low for what you get, it is the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. NOK 2,100 per person buys 5–6 hours in a small-group vehicle across Kvaløya to the island of Sommarøy — coastal roads, mountains straight into the sea, white-sand beaches, repeated photo stops, wildlife spotting for reindeer, moose, sea eagles and in the migration months whales — plus an Arctic lunch at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel by the water, with vegan and vegetarian options. In a country where a restaurant lunch alone is a serious expense, having it inside the tour price changes the sum.

It runs year-round at the same price, recommended for ages 7 and up. For a family outside the shared age limits, the private version is NOK 15,000 for the whole vehicle — NOK 1,875 each with eight on board. For comparison, the shorter Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 1,500 for 3–4 hours with a 10:00 pickup: a good half-day if time is tight, but it does not list a lunch, and the extra NOK 600 for Sommarøy buys roughly two more hours, the beaches and the meal.
The Premium Tier: Huskies, Reindeer, Snowmobiles, Whales and Boats
Above the everyday tours sits a tier of private experiences where the per-group price makes people blink. Two are bookable online and the reader code applies: the Private Dog Sledding – Husky Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 95,000 per group (5–6 hours, ages 7 and up, pickup 08:45, 2–8 guests), and the Private Reindeer Farm Visit with Reindeer Feeding & Sámi Culture5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 35,000 per group (6–7 hours, all ages, pickup 08:30). Divide by eight and the reindeer day is NOK 4,375 a head; the husky day is NOK 11,875.

Three more are call-to-book only — no online calendar, you contact Legendary Adventure directly, and the Hungrytravelfamily code does not apply:
- Private Snowmobile Safari — from NOK 50,000 per group, 7 hours, ages 7 and up, winter.
- Private Whale Watching — from NOK 120,000 per group, 7–8 hours, all ages, maximum 12 people, October to January, starting 08:30 from Fredrik Langes gate 2 on the Tromsø harbour.
- Private Fjord Cruise — from NOK 70,000 per group, 4 hours, all ages, summer.
These are priced for groups, incentive trips and people for whom a private boat in the Arctic is the point of the holiday — a private whale-watching day for twelve works out at NOK 10,000 per person. We list them so the price picture is complete, not because we expect most families to book them.
Cancellation, Currency and Paying for Tours
Cancellation. On the shared tours the operator’s terms are simple: cancel more than 48 hours before departure and you are refunded in full; inside 48 hours the full amount is charged. For the northern lights chase there is a second layer in your favour — if the guides judge there is no chance of clear sky anywhere they can reach, they cancel before departure and refund or rebook you. If the tour runs and the lights do not appear, there is no refund; that is standard across Tromsø and the reason to book the chase on your first night.
Currency. Every price here is in Norwegian kroner, and that is what you are charged at checkout. Your card issuer converts at its own rate on the day, so the figure on your statement in euros, pounds or dollars will move with the exchange rate — we deliberately do not quote conversions because they would be wrong by the time you read them. If a checkout or terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in NOK; that convenience conversion is almost always the worse rate.
Paying. Tours are paid by card online at booking, in full, through the operator’s FareHarbor checkout. Norway is close to cashless and cards are accepted everywhere in Tromsø, so there is no reason to carry kroner. Tipping guides is appreciated but not expected in Norway and is not built into the price.
How to Book With the Hungrytravelfamily Discount
Every tour in the big table is booked directly with Legendary Adventure through their FareHarbor calendar, which opens when you tap the tour name. Pick your date and number of guests, and on the checkout page enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field. The 5% comes off before you pay, and it works on every tour booked online — shared and private, from the NOK 1,500 Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 to the NOK 95,000 husky day. On a NOK 15,000 private chase that is NOK 750 back. The call-to-book items — snowmobile safari, whale watching, fjord cruise — are arranged by contacting the operator, and the code does not apply to them.
Full transparency: we are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a small commission on bookings made with our code. It never changes your price — the discount is a genuine reader rate on top of the normal price.

Our Honest Final Word
Tromsø tours are expensive by almost any standard except Norway’s own, and the way to make peace with that is to compare what is inside the price rather than the headline number. A NOK 2,300 chase that feeds you, dresses you and drives for up to eight hours is better value than a cheaper coach that parks in one spot. A NOK 2,100 fjord day with lunch is the best-priced thing on the list. And a NOK 15,000 private vehicle shared by seven or eight friends or a big family is cheaper per head than the shared tour — with none of the age limits.
