Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Rovaniemi: What to Book for 24–26 December 2026

Christmas Eve is the quietest, most Finnish evening of the year, and it changes how Lapland tours work. Here is what we would book for 24, 25 and 26 December, and the one rule that catches people out.

We have both spent enough December evenings in Rovaniemi to know that Christmas Eve is not like any other night of the festive season. The Santa Claus Village crowds of mid-December thin out, the streets go quiet by the afternoon, and for most Finnish families the real celebration happens at home, around a table, with a sauna beforehand and, in many houses, a knock on the door from the Finnish Santa, Joulupukki.

That rhythm is exactly why visitors need a different plan for 24 to 26 December. Tours still run in Lapland, but they run by their own holiday rules, the minimum group sizes change, and the booking windows matter more than usual. This guide is about turning that into a calm, well-booked Christmas rather than a scramble.

Short answer

If you want one thing for Christmas week, we would look first at the Magical Private Santa Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €249, about 1.5 hours, a private 30-minute meeting with Santa and a gift for each child). Pair it with an evening aurora tour such as the Northern Lights Tour in Atmospheric Cottage5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €109, 3 hours). Christmas Day and Boxing Day are public holidays, so group tours can need 4 people instead of 2, and availability only exists where the live calendar below shows it.

What Christmas Eve really looks like in Rovaniemi

If you are used to Christmas as a day of presents in the morning and a big lunch, the Finnish version takes a moment to adjust to. The main event is Christmas Eve, 24 December, which in 2026 falls on a Thursday. Many Finns visit family, some light candles at the graves of relatives, almost everyone has a sauna, and the evening meal is the centrepiece. There is even a national ritual to mark the start: the Declaration of Christmas Peace, read out in Turku at noon on Christmas Eve and broadcast across the country.

For visitors, that mostly means two things. First, daytime sightseeing feels slower and quieter than the weeks before, which many people find beautiful. Second, anything you want to do should be booked in advance rather than hoped for on the day, because opening hours are reduced and tours run in small, pre-booked groups.

The light is part of the mood. Around the solstice the sun barely clears the horizon, so the day is a long blue twilight and the snow glows rather than glares. It is the best time of year for the soft, candle-lit kind of Lapland, and the worst time for anything that depends on a precise schedule you have not confirmed.

If you are still deciding which days to choose, our guide to the Lapland Christmas season compares the whole of December, and the week before Christmas post covers the busy days leading up to this one.

The public-holiday rule that changes your plan

Here is the single most useful fact in this article. On the StayLapland product pages we checked for this guide, group tours carry a minimum group size that depends on the day. At least 2 people are required on weekdays and Saturdays, and at least 4 people are required on Sundays and public holidays. The guaranteed northern lights hunt raises it further, to 4 people normally and 6 people on public holidays.

In Finland, Christmas Day (Friday 25 December 2026) and Boxing Day, called Tapaninpäivä (Saturday 26 December 2026), are public holidays. Christmas Eve is not an official public holiday, but it is treated as one in daily life, and we would not be surprised to see holiday rules apply there too. So the safest assumption is that a couple booking a group tour on any of these three days may find the tour cancelled or rescheduled if the group does not reach the holiday minimum.

What that means in practice: if you are two adults, favour a private product where the minimum is simply your own party, or book a day when the live calendar already shows other bookings. Read the notes in the booking window carefully; they state the exact minimum for the product on your date. Booking early also helps, because a group that is clearly going to run is easier to fill.

Santa on Christmas Eve: the private visit

The Magical Private Santa Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the product that fits Christmas week best, because the whole point of it is that it is yours alone. According to the StayLapland page it takes about 1.5 hours and includes an exclusive 30-minute private meeting with Santa Claus, a gift from Santa for each child, warm berry juice and cookies, and a personal Santa's Elf who accompanies the family from pick-up to drop-off. Pick-up and drop-off are included inside 10 km of the city centre, and the starting price is €249.

The setting is Santa's Secret Hide-out, reached by pick-up with your elf, which is the real difference from queueing in the busy village in December. There is no maximum age listed, so grandparents are welcome, and children under 13 must be accompanied by adults paying the full price. Booking closes 12 hours before the start time, and the page lists free cancellation up to 7 days before the activity.

Who should book this on Christmas Eve? Families who want a single, special memory in the quietest week of the year, and anyone who has promised a child they would meet Santa and does not want to leave it to chance. Who should skip it? Anyone travelling without children who simply wants atmosphere; the cosy cottage evening later in this guide gives more of that for less.

Because the minimum on Sundays and public holidays is 4 people, a family of three should read the notes for their date and, if there is any doubt, write to StayLapland before booking. We would rather you ask than assume.

If you are planning beyond Boxing Day, our New Year guide picks up where this one stops.

Northern lights on Christmas night

Aurora does not take Christmas off, and the long nights around the solstice give you plenty of dark sky. What changes is how you choose to chase it. We would look at three options, in this order of comfort.

The Northern Lights Tour in Atmospheric Cottage5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €109, 3 hours) is built around a 100-year-old Finnish cottage by a lake with a campfire shelter, local snacks and drinks, and a surprise gift for the children. StayLapland itself recommends this one for families with children because it offers a warm indoor space. Booking closes 3 hours before the start.

The Northern Lights Tour Sleigh Ride5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €109, 4 hours) adds a sleigh pulled by a snowmobile, snacks and drinks by the campfire in a teepee, and all the winter clothing. The page lists a temperature limit of -35°C, and -25°C for small children. It is the more adventurous of the two and it is the one we would pick for teenagers.

The Professional Small Group Northern Lights Hunting Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199) is the one for people who want to give themselves the best chance and are prepared to wait. A small group of 2 to 8 people goes with a guide and photographer, the route follows the weather, and you get professional photos delivered online. There is a 100% refund if no northern lights photos are captured, start times usually fall between 17:00 and 21:00, and the tour can run for many hours. Remember the holiday minimum: 4 people, or 6 on public holidays.

A cheaper variant of the same idea is the bus-based guaranteed hunting tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €109, 5 hours). Whichever you choose, treat aurora as a bonus rather than a promise; the sky decides, and the refund conditions apply to the guaranteed hunts only.

The quiet daytime option: reindeer

If Christmas Eve is a day you want to spend gently, the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €159, about 3 hours) is the most natural thing to do in the middle of the day. The tour includes a 2 to 3 km reindeer safari in the forest, stories about reindeer herding, winter clothing in adult and child sizes, and cookies and juice. If the weather does not allow a sleigh ride, the tour is arranged as a reindeer walk instead.

The notes matter here too: at least 2 people on weekdays and Saturdays and at least 4 on Sundays and public holidays, children under 13 accompanied by adults paying full price, and no infants on laps. The recommended minimum age is 3. If you have grandparents with you, this is the gentlest activity in the whole region, and it is one of the few that works for every generation at once.

It is also the activity that feels most like Christmas to people who have never been to Lapland, because it comes with nothing to learn and nothing to be good at. You sit, the reindeer walk, and the forest does the rest.

Three sample plans for 24, 25 and 26 December

Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December. Keep the day light. A late morning reindeer visit or a private Santa visit in the early afternoon, then home to your hotel or cabin for the sauna and the evening meal. If your accommodation does not serve a Christmas dinner, ask about it well ahead of time.

Christmas Day, Friday 25 December. A slow day. We would book one evening tour only, ideally the cottage aurora evening, because it is warm, finishes at a sensible hour, and does not ask you to be up early after the long Christmas Eve. Check the 4-person holiday minimum when you book.

Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December. The first day when the region feels fully awake again. This is the day for the bigger adventure: a snowmobile safari or the sleigh-ride aurora evening. If you only have time for one headline experience, put it here.

For a longer stay, the days between Christmas and New Year are covered in their own guide, and the full list of activities in Rovaniemi shows everything else that is bookable.

Upgrading and combining

There is a sensible way to build one rich evening out of two products. Book the private Santa visit for the afternoon and an aurora tour for the same evening, and leave at least an hour between pick-up and drop-off so that no one is rushed. Because the two are separate bookings you can check each date independently in the calendar on this page, which is useful when holiday minimums apply to one and not the other.

If you want to upgrade from a group evening to something fully private, private versions exist for several tours, but they are priced very differently: the private guaranteed hunting tour starts from €1,990. That is a gift-level purchase, and we would only suggest it for a milestone trip or a proposal. Most families are better served by the standard group tour and the 5% reader discount, which is applied with HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout.

And if you are not sure which evening product fits your group, the week-before-Christmas guide compares the busier weeks in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can you book a private Santa visit in Rovaniemi on Christmas Eve itself?
It depends on what the live calendar shows for 24 December, and we cannot see availability in advance. What we can tell you is the rule on StayLapland's page: a Magical Private Santa Visit needs at least 2 people on weekdays and Saturdays and at least 4 people on Sundays and public holidays, and booking closes 12 hours before the start time. If 24 December shows no slots, it is not bookable online for that date.

Do group tours need more people on Christmas Day and Boxing Day?
On the StayLapland product pages we checked, tours that run in groups carry a minimum of 2 people on weekdays and Saturdays and 4 people on Sundays and public holidays. Christmas Day (Friday 25 December 2026) and Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December 2026) are both Finnish public holidays, so assume the higher number can apply and read the notes in the booking window before you pay.

Is the guaranteed northern lights hunt different on public holidays?
Yes, slightly. The small group hunt is cancelled or rescheduled if fewer than 4 people are booked, or fewer than 6 on public holidays. It is also the tour with a refund promise: you get 100% of your money back if no northern lights photos are captured. Start times usually fall between 17:00 and 21:00 and are confirmed by email.

Is it too cold for small children on a sleigh or reindeer ride at Christmas?
The sleigh ride tour lists a temperature limit of -35°C, and -25°C for small children, for safety reasons. The recommended minimum age on the reindeer, cottage and sleigh tours is 3, and infants must not sit on laps. If you are travelling with a baby, the indoor cottage tour or the private Santa visit are the gentler routes, and it is worth writing to StayLapland first.

What is the cheapest way to see the northern lights on Christmas night?
The Northern Lights Tour in Atmospheric Cottage and the Northern Lights Tour Sleigh Ride both start from €109, and the bus-based guaranteed hunting tour also starts from €109. Prices are from-prices per adult, so check the booking window for the exact figure on your date.

Does the reader discount work on Christmas week bookings?
Yes. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off every StayLapland tour, with no expiry. It is the only code we use, and it is applied in the booking window on this page.

What we would book

If we had a family, a Christmas week in Rovaniemi, and one decision to make, we would book the Magical Private Santa Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 first, because it is the product with the least slack and the most meaning. Then we would add one aurora evening, the cottage tour if the children are small and the sleigh ride if they are not. Everything else is optional.

Use the live calendar below to see which dates are actually on sale, apply HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off every StayLapland tour, and read the holiday minimum in the notes before you pay. If a date you want does not appear, it is not bookable online, and the sensible move is to choose the next day rather than hold out.
