Why Easter in Tromsø Is Different
Easter in Norway is a long holiday. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, and many Norwegians go to their cabins or head north to the mountains. In 2027, Easter Sunday is on 28 March, which is late enough that Tromsø has come out of the polar night and into long, bright days.
That changes the character of the trip. In December you plan around darkness. At the end of March you plan around light: the sun is high enough for blue skies and strong reflections, but nights are still dark enough for the aurora, even if they begin later in the evening.
From our own Arctic winters, late March is when people tell us they got the best of both seasons: deep snow and daylight in the day, northern lights at night.
The Daytime Tours in Easter Light
Easter is the season for snow. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a 4-hour winter tour (including transfer) at NOK 1,500 per person, ages 10+, with a 10:00 pickup. Late in the season the snow in the mountains is usually deep and the days long, so the hike is bright and often sunny, with views over the fjords.

The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 runs year-round and is 5–6 hours at NOK 2,100, including lunch. In late March the light on the beaches and mountains is very different from midwinter: sharper and warmer. Our fjord-tour guides on the site compare the seasons in detail.
For a lighter outing, the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is 3–4 hours at NOK 1,500.
Can You Still See the Northern Lights in Late March?
Yes, it is still possible, but the window is narrowing. The aurora is generated by solar activity, not by the calendar, and activity around the equinoxes in March and September is often cited as favourable. The practical difference is that evenings get lighter, so the sky is dark enough only later at night.
The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is listed as a winter experience, with a 5–8 hour chase picked up outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. The pickup time has been 18:30 since 25 October; check your booking for the time on your date, since the operator may change it as light increases. The guides choose the route from the forecast, going inland or along the coast.
As always, nobody can promise the aurora. Treat it as a chance, book more than one night if you can, and enjoy the rest of the trip regardless.

Easter Crowds and When to Book
Easter is a peak travel period in Norway. Hotels, flights and tours around the holiday tend to book up earlier than neighbouring weeks, simply because families have time off. We cannot quote availability, but the rule is the same for any holiday: decide your dates, then book the tours that are most important to you first.

Remember the cancellation rule. According to the operator, a booking cancelled more than 48 hours before the tour gets a full refund, and one cancelled inside 48 hours is charged in full. Booking early therefore costs little risk, as long as you keep track of the date.
The Easter holiday is also a good time for families with children. The shared northern lights tour is recommended for ages 7+, the snowshoe hike for ages 10+, and the private tours are listed for all ages.
Private Tours for Easter Family Reunions
Many Easter trips are family trips, sometimes with grandparents. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group, for up to eight guests, suitable for all ages. The Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group with a pickup location you choose during checkout, and the Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 12,000.
For four people, the private northern lights tour is NOK 3,750 each. The shared tour is cheaper, so private is about control and comfort, not savings.
