Why Tromsø Works for a Short Holiday Break

Tromsø sits on the coast of northern Norway, well inside the aurora zone, and has an airport close to the centre. For visitors with a week of holiday, that means a short flight plan and a place where tours leave from one meeting point outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. The polar night keeps daylight short, but the tours are built around that: a 10:00 pickup for the daytime tours and a 18:30 or 19:00 pickup for the aurora.

We write from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, and we know Christmas week there, the crowds and the booking pressure. Tromsø is similar: the dates around 24–26 December and New Year fill first, then the week up to Epiphany on 6 January.

A Four-Night Plan We Would Use

Night one: arrive, eat, sleep. Day two: the 10:00 Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, a 5–6 hour coastal day with a local lunch included, for NOK 2,100 per person. Night two: the 19:00 Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. Day three: keep it free, rest, walk the city. Night three: a second chase if you want two chances, or the 18:30 Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. Day four: departure or an easy morning.

This plan has a clear logic: it puts the weather-sensitive aurora twice in the week and the weather-tolerant coastal day in between.

Booking Around the Holidays

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve are the nights that sell out first, and some guests prefer a quiet evening on those dates anyway. We would choose the chase for 26–28 December or 2–5 January. If you travel in the Epiphany week, the days just before 6 January are generally calmer than New Year.

Remember the cancellation rule: full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure, full charge inside 48 hours. That gives you flexibility until two days before, and makes early booking low-risk.

Families and Groups

The shared tour is recommended for ages 7 and up. For younger children, or a family of five or six, the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is all ages, 5–8 hours, NOK 15,000 per group for up to 8 guests. You choose your pickup location at checkout, which is a relief on a cold night.

If a child is under 7 and you still want a daytime activity, the private fjord tours list all ages; the details are on the booking pages.

Language and Booking Practicalities

The operator’s booking pages and tours are in English. If anyone in your group is not comfortable in English, tell the guide at pickup; guides are used to international groups. Payment is online at checkout, and you enter the promo code in the dedicated field.

Meals: the northern lights tour includes a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The Sommarøy tour includes a local lunch; the operator’s page notes vegan and vegetarian options on that lunch. For any other dietary needs, contact the operator before the trip.

What to Wear

The northern lights tour provides a winter suit. Underneath, wear wool or synthetic base layers, thick socks, a warm hat and gloves. For the daytime fjord tour, bring your own warm winter clothes and good boots; stops by the sea can be windy.

Getting to the Meeting Point and Moving Around

The shared tours all collect from the same place: outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, on the harbour front, where you look for a black Mercedes. If you are staying in the centre, you can walk there in a few minutes; if you stay further out, allow time for a taxi or bus. The private tours offer a different arrangement: you choose your pickup location at checkout, which is useful for families with sleepy children and for hotels outside the centre.

Do not underestimate how long a winter walk takes on icy pavements. Add ten minutes to every estimate, and wear boots with grip. If you arrive from Paris or another hub on a late flight, plan your first tour for the second day rather than the evening of arrival.

A Gentler Option: Evening Snowshoe Walk

If a five-to-eight-hour chase sounds like too much for the whole group, consider the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. It costs NOK 1,500 per person, takes 4 hours, collects at 18:30 and includes the guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, snowshoe rental, snacks and a hot drink. Ages 10 and up are recommended. It is not a substitute for the chase if your goal is the best chance of the aurora, but it is a good second evening when everyone is tired.

For the daytime, the 10:00 Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the same NOK 1,500 and the same group size of 2–8, and it gives a very different face of the Arctic: silent snow, big views, and no need to stay up late.

Budget Notes for a Family of Four

Prices on the booking pages are in Norwegian kroner. For a family of four with two teenagers, the shared Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 9,200, and the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 8,400, before the 5% discount. A private chase for the same four people is NOK 15,000 as a single price for the vehicle, so the private tour only becomes cheaper than shared seats once you have more than six people. For four, the shared tour is cheaper; the private tour buys flexibility and all-ages access.

We would not compare these to any other website here; our advice is only that the code works when you book directly with the operator.

What We Would Book

For a short holiday: the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. More ideas are in our Tromsø activities guide.

Booking is simple. Open the booking calendar behind any Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 link on this page, pick your date and group size, and on the checkout page type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 into the promo-code field to take 5% off. The code works on every Legendary Adventure tour booked online, you pay Legendary Adventure directly, and the cancellation rule is the operator’s: full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before, full charge inside 48 hours. We are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a small commission, which never changes your price.
