4 Nights in Tromsø for the Northern Lights: How Many Aurora Tours to Book, and Which Daytime Tours Fit Around Them
Four nights is the stay we recommend most for a northern lights trip to Tromsø — but it raises an awkward question: one aurora tour, two, or one every night? Here is our answer, the night-by-night plan built around it, and the daytime tours that fit between late returns, with Legendary Adventure’s prices and pickup times.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
On a four-night trip, book two aurora evenings: the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on night one (NOK 2,300, 5–8 hours, pickup 18:30) and a second attempt on night three — another chase if night one was cloudy, or the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500, 4 hours) if you already had a good show. Leave nights two and four free for sleep and as a buffer. Fill the days with the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on day two (NOK 2,100, lunch included) and the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on day three (NOK 1,500, 10:00 pickup). Two chases plus the two day tours come to NOK 8,200 per person, or NOK 7,790 with code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5.

The Short Answer: Two Aurora Tours, Not One and Not Four
Seeing the northern lights from Tromsø depends far more on cloud than on anything else. The aurora is often active over northern Norway in the dark months; what stops you seeing it is a blanket of coastal cloud. A guided chase improves your odds on any single night because the guide plans the route from the latest weather forecasts and heads inland or along the coast to wherever the sky looks clearest. It cannot make a fully overcast region clear.
That is why the number of attempts matters more than the choice of tour. One attempt is a single roll of the dice. Two attempts on separate nights, with a gap between them, give the weather a chance to change and give you a second, independent shot.
So why not book all four nights? Because the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 lasts 5–8 hours. On a stubborn night you are back in the small hours, and four of those in a row leave you too tired to enjoy the days — and Tromsø’s daytime tours are half the reason to come. Two planned attempts, with the free nights in between as buffers, is the balance we would choose for ourselves.
We live in Rovaniemi and have chased the lights through many Arctic winters. The pattern is the same on both sides of the border: the people who come home happy are the ones who gave themselves more than one night.
One, Two or Three Aurora Tours: What Each Choice Gets You
| Aurora tours | Which nights | Aurora cost per person | Nights left free | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One | Night 1 | NOK 2,300 | 3 | Tight budgets; trips where the lights are a bonus |
| Two (our pick) | Nights 1 and 3 | NOK 3,800–4,600 | 2 | Most travellers: two real chances, rested days |
| Three | Nights 1, 3 and 4 | NOK 5,300–6,900 | 1 | Aurora-first trips; photographers |
One tour makes sense if money is tight or the northern lights are not the main reason you came. Put it on night one, and on the other clear nights walk to a darker spot away from the city lights on your own. You will see less than on a guided chase, but you might still see something.
Two tours is our recommendation for almost everyone. The cost range depends on whether the second is another chase (NOK 2,300) or the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500).
Three tours is only for travellers who care about the aurora above everything else — photographers, or someone ticking off a lifelong goal. You give up a rested day, so drop one of the daytime tours to make room. We would never book three chases in a row; separate them with at least one free night.
Night Three: A Second Chase or the Aurora Snowshoe Hike?
Your choice for the second attempt depends on how night one went.

Night one was cloudy, or the show was faint: book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 again. You want the best odds, and the chase gives you that because it can move to clearer sky. The route will be different because the forecast will be different.
Night one was good: book the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 instead. It picks up at 18:30 from the same place, lasts four hours, includes snowshoe rental, snacks and a hot drink, and is recommended for ages 10 and up. You walk out of the city glow with a guide and wait for the sky on foot, in silence. It stays near Tromsø rather than driving to clear sky, so the odds are lower on a cloudy night — but having already seen the lights, you are buying a different experience, not insurance. It is also NOK 800 cheaper and back hours earlier.
Families with children under 7 should book the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for both attempts: NOK 15,000 per group of up to eight, all ages, pickup at 19:00 from the address you choose. Children aged 7 and over can join the shared chase.
The catch is timing. On the shared tours you get a full refund only if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure, and night three’s pickup is just 48 hours after night one’s. By the time you know how night one went, the second tour is already inside that window. So you have two honest options: decide up front (two chases if the aurora is the priority, the chase plus the snowshoe hike if you want variety), or leave night three unbooked and look for a last-minute place the morning after night one — which can work in quieter weeks but is never guaranteed.
The 4-Night Plan, Night by Night
Day 1 — Arrive; night 1: the Northern Lights Tour
Land by mid-afternoon if you can. Eat lightly, because the chase includes a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. Pickup is 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge — look for a black Mercedes. Winter suits are provided and go over your own layers. Expect to be out 5–8 hours.

Day 2 — The Sommarøy fjord day; night 2: free
The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 and is the most relaxing day in the plan: 5–6 hours of coastal roads, scenic stops and a local lunch at Sommarøy. Doze between stops if the chase ran late. Night two stays free. Go to bed early.
Day 3 — Morning snowshoe hike; night 3: second aurora attempt
The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 and lasts four hours including transfers, with snowshoes and poles provided. Back around 14:00, rest for the afternoon, then go out again at 18:30 — the chase or the aurora snowshoe hike, as above.
Day 4 — Slow morning; night 4: the buffer
Sleep in. If you want a short outing, the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 for 3–4 hours. Night four is your reserve. If neither attempt worked, try for a last-minute place on the chase (availability is not guaranteed). If you are flying home early on day five, think twice before a tour that can last until the small hours.
Day 5 — Departure
Tromsø Airport is about 10–15 minutes from the centre by taxi, which makes even a late-morning flight easy after a quiet last night.

The rule for a northern lights trip is simple: after a chase night, only book tours that start at 10:00 or later, and prefer seated ones. That makes the Sommarøy day perfect for day two and pushes the walking to day three, when you have had a full night’s sleep.

These fit well:
- Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — NOK 2,100, 5–6 hours, 10:00, ages 7+, lunch included. Fjords, white beaches and wildlife spotting from a warm vehicle.
- Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — NOK 1,500, 4 hours, 10:00, ages 10+. The active half-day, back in time to rest before an evening tour.
- Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — NOK 1,500, 3–4 hours, 10:00, ages 7+. A shorter fjord drive for day four or for a slower trip.
These need careful placement: the Private Reindeer Farm Visit with Reindeer Feeding & Sámi Culture5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 08:30 and the Private Dog Sledding – Husky Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at 08:45. Never put them the morning after a chase. In this plan, the only morning that follows a free night is day three, so swap one of them in for the snowshoe hike if your group wants it.
If you only want a single chase and are wondering which of the four nights to pick, our guide to which night to book on a four-night stay covers that decision on its own.
What to Book Now and What to Leave Open
It is tempting to keep every evening open and book a chase only when the forecast looks good. In practice that rarely works, for two reasons.
First, the cancellation rule. On the shared tours you get a full refund more than 48 hours before departure and pay the full price inside 48 hours. Cloud forecasts beyond a day or two are not reliable enough to make that call, so you cannot book speculatively and cancel once the forecast turns.
Second, availability. Groups are 2–8 guests per vehicle, so the evening you want can fill up, especially around the holidays.
Our approach:
- Book now: night one chase, the Sommarøy day and the snowshoe hike.
- Decide now, if your dates are busy: the night-three tour. It starts only 48 hours after night one, so you cannot wait for the result and still cancel for free. Book a second chase if the aurora is the priority, or the Aurora Snowshoe Hike for variety.
- Leave open: night two and night four. They are your rest and your reserve.
And give yourselves realistic expectations. No tour can guarantee the aurora, and a responsible operator will not promise it. What a good plan does is give you the most chances without wearing you out.
What Four Nights Cost: Two or Three Aurora Tours
Operator from-prices in Norwegian kroner, per person on the shared tours. The last column is the price after entering the code at checkout.
| Plan | Tours | Price | With 5% code |
|---|---|---|---|
| One aurora tour | Northern Lights Tour + Sommarøy + Arctic Snowshoe Hike | NOK 5,900 | NOK 5,605 |
| Two — chase + snowshoe night | Northern Lights Tour + Aurora Snowshoe Hike + Sommarøy + Arctic Snowshoe Hike | NOK 7,400 | NOK 7,030 |
| Two chases (our pick) | 2 × Northern Lights Tour + Sommarøy + Arctic Snowshoe Hike | NOK 8,200 | NOK 7,790 |
| Three chases | 3 × Northern Lights Tour + Sommarøy (snowshoe dropped) | NOK 9,000 | NOK 8,550 |
| Add-on | Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour on day 4 | NOK 1,500 | NOK 1,425 |
| Family, private | 2 × Private Northern Lights Tour (per group) | NOK 30,000 | NOK 28,500 |
For a couple on our recommended plan, that is NOK 16,400, or NOK 15,580 with the code. The chase includes a warm meal and the Sommarøy day includes lunch, which takes two restaurant meals off your trip budget.

FAQ
How many northern lights tours should I book for 4 nights in Tromsø?
Two. Book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on night one and a second attempt on night three, and keep nights two and four free as rest and backup. Three is only worth it if the aurora is the sole purpose of your trip.
Is it worth doing two northern lights tours in Tromsø?
For most people, yes. Cloud is the main reason people miss the aurora, and two attempts on separate nights give you two independent chances. If the first night is a success, the second can be the cheaper Aurora Snowshoe Hike for a different experience.
Can I book the second northern lights tour at the last minute?
Sometimes, but there is no guarantee of space because each vehicle takes 2–8 guests. Night three is only 48 hours after night one, so if you book both in advance you cannot wait for the first result and still cancel for a full refund. Decide up front, or leave the second night open and try at the last minute.
Which daytime tours fit around northern lights nights?
Tours with a 10:00 pickup: the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour the day after your first chase, and the Arctic Snowshoe Hike after a free night. Avoid the private reindeer and husky days (08:30 and 08:45 pickups) the morning after a chase.
How much does a 4-night northern lights trip with tours cost?
Our recommended plan — two Northern Lights Tours, the Sommarøy fjord day and the Arctic Snowshoe Hike — is NOK 8,200 per person, or NOK 7,790 with code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. Flights, accommodation and most meals are extra.
What time do the northern lights tours finish?
The Northern Lights Tour picks up at 18:30 and lasts 5–8 hours, depending on how far the guide drives for clear sky. The Aurora Snowshoe Hike picks up at 18:30 and lasts about four hours.
Our Honest Final Word
Four nights in Tromsø gives you something a weekend cannot: room for the weather to change. Use it well by booking two aurora evenings with a free night between them, putting the relaxed fjord day after the first late night, and keeping the last night as a reserve rather than a commitment. You will come home rested, with two real chances at the lights and two days that show you the Arctic in daylight.
