Tromsø With Kids in Winter: A 4-Day Family Itinerary Built Around Ages, Naps and Private Vans

With children, the Tromsø plan is decided by two things: the age rules on each tour and how late your youngest can last. This is the four-day family itinerary we would give friends, using Legendary Adventure’s real age limits and prices — a northern lights night in your own van, a reindeer or fjord day, a coastal day with lunch, a rest day in the middle — with a version for every age group and 5% off every tour.

The Age Rules That Shape a Family Plan in Tromsø

Before you pick a single tour, check the youngest age in your group against the operator’s recommendations. Legendary Adventure lists them clearly, and they decide most of the plan for you:

So: with a child under seven, the private versions are not a luxury, they are the only way to do the aurora chase and the fjord days. From seven, the shared tours open up and the budget changes completely. From ten, snowshoeing joins the menu.

The plan below is for a family of four with four nights in central Tromsø between November and March, arriving on day 1 by mid-afternoon and flying home on day 5. At a glance: Day 1 northern lights, Day 2 rest, Day 3 reindeer or a short fjord morning, Day 4 the Sommarøy coast. For a broader look at every tour by age, see our guide to Tromsø with kids in winter.

Day 1 — Arrive Early, Chase the Lights in Your Own Van

We put the aurora on night one in every Tromsø plan, and with children that matters even more: if the sky is cloudy, you still have two more evenings to try again, and you are not dragging tired kids out on the last night before a flight.

Land, check in, let the children run around the harbour for an hour, and feed everyone a proper early dinner. Then:

  • Youngest under 7: the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. NOK 15,000 for the whole vehicle (up to 8 guests), all ages, pickup at 19:00 from the address you choose at checkout, 5–8 hours. A local guide, a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, winter suits, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks are included. The real value is control: the back row becomes a bed, the guide wakes you when the sky turns green, and you go home when your family is done rather than when a group of strangers is.
  • Everyone 7 or older: the shared Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 2,300 each (NOK 9,200 for four), pickup 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, the same 5–8 hours and inclusions in a group of 2–8. Remember the shared van stays out as long as the guide needs to find clear sky — on a stubborn night, that can be well past midnight.

With six or more in your party, private is about the same per head as shared — NOK 2,500 each with six — so it is the obvious choice. Our post on the northern lights tour with kids and bedtimes covers the night itself in more detail.

Day 2 — A Rest Day for Little Legs

No pickup today, whatever happened last night. Children who were up past midnight need a slow morning, and so do you. When everyone is fed and dressed, there is plenty in town for a gentle day:

  • Polaria, the Arctic aquarium near the harbour, is the obvious indoor stop for younger children.
  • The Fjellheisen cable car gives the whole family a view over the island, the bridge and the mountains in a few minutes.
  • Sledging and snow play in any park — bring or buy a cheap plastic sled; it is the activity children remember longest.
  • The Arctic Cathedral, across the bridge, for parents who want one sight of their own.

The evening is a back-up. If night one was cloudy and the forecast looks clearer, you can add another northern lights night — check the live calendar in the morning, because private vehicles and small shared groups fill in busy weeks. If you saw the lights, early dinner and early bed: day three may start at 08:30.

One practical tip from our own Lapland winters: plan indoor breaks every couple of hours on a town day, and keep spare gloves in your bag. Children’s hands get wet in snow far faster than adults’ do.

Day 3 — Reindeer Day, or a Short Fjord Morning

Day three is the animal day, and there are two ways to do it depending on budget.

The splurge: the Private Reindeer Farm Visit with Reindeer Feeding & Sámi Culture5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. A 6–7 hour private day for all ages, with pickup at 08:30 from your chosen address, transport in a Mercedes minivan, reindeer feeding, Sámi culture, snowshoe rental, and a Sámi lunch and coffee. It costs NOK 35,000 per group (2–8 guests), which is NOK 8,750 each for a family of four. We live in Finnish Lapland, where reindeer are part of everyday life, and we will be honest: this is a premium private day, not a quick farm stop. For grandparents and grandchildren on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, it is exactly that.

The budget option: a short fjord morning. The Private Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 12,000 per group, 3–4 hours, all ages, with a 10:00 pickup from your address, and coffee or tea and a cinnamon bun included — a detail that buys a lot of goodwill from a six-year-old. If all your children are 7 or older, the shared Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 1,500 each (NOK 6,000 for four), also at 10:00.

Either way, you are back by afternoon with time for a nap before dinner.

Day 4 — The Sommarøy Coast, With Lunch Included

The final full day is the big landscape day: fjords, snowy mountains and white-sand Arctic beaches on the drive west across Kvaløya to the island of Sommarøy, with several scenic stops and a local lunch at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel by the sea (vegan and vegetarian options available). The guide looks out for reindeer, moose and sea eagles on the way — possible sightings, not promises.

Five to six hours is a long time in a minibus for small children, which is the honest case for going private here: the guide can stop for a snowball fight on a beach rather than sticking to the group’s pace.

Children all 10 or older? Consider swapping this day, or day three, for the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — 10:00 pickup, 4 hours including transfer, snowshoes and poles included, NOK 1,500 each. Older children and teenagers often prefer walking in deep snow to sitting in a van, and it is half the time.

What to Choose by Age and Budget

If you only want two tours, keep the northern lights night and the Sommarøy day — they are the two experiences that define a Tromsø winter. Three tours is the plan above. A fourth would be a second aurora night on day 2, or the snowshoe hike if your children are 10 or older.

Under 7 in the group: go private for the chase and both fjord days. The reindeer farm is all ages too. Skip anything shared — the age recommendations are there for a reason, and a late night in a van full of strangers is hard on everyone.

Youngest aged 7–9: the shared tours work. Book the shared chase, the shared Ersfjord morning and the shared Sommarøy day and the plan costs a little over half of the all-private version. Consider private only for the chase, where a bedtime matters most.

Everyone 10 and up: add snowshoeing. The Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500 each, 18:30 pickup, back around 22:30) is a shorter, earlier aurora evening that suits families well as a second lights night.

Big budget, children 7 and up: the Private Dog Sledding – Husky Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — NOK 95,000 per group, 5–6 hours, pickup 08:45, winter suit and boots and hot drinks included. It is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime price, and the private reindeer day delivers much of the same animal magic for far less.

What Four Days Cost for a Family of Four

Operator from-prices in Norwegian kroner. Private tours are per vehicle for up to 8 guests; shared tours are per person, and we have priced every child at the published per-person rate — check the booking calendar for the exact price for your party. Per person for four, that is about NOK 5,600, NOK 10,000 or NOK 15,400 after the discount. For a group of eight — two families, or three generations — the private versions are the same total, so the per-person cost halves: about NOK 4,990 each for the all-private plan.

FAQ

Can young children go on a northern lights tour in Tromsø?

Yes, on the Private Northern Lights Tour, which Legendary Adventure lists for all ages (NOK 15,000 per vehicle for up to 8 guests, pickup 19:00 at your chosen address). The shared Northern Lights Tour is recommended for ages 7 and up.

How much does a 4-day Tromsø family trip cost in tours?

For a family of four, about NOK 23,600 on shared tours if all children are 7 or older, NOK 42,000 for the all-private version, and NOK 65,000 with the private reindeer day — before the 5% off with code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5.

What is the minimum age for snowshoeing in Tromsø?

Legendary Adventure recommends ages 10 and up for all its snowshoe hikes, including the Arctic Snowshoe Hike, the Aurora Snowshoe Hike and their private versions.

Is the private reindeer farm visit suitable for toddlers?

It is listed for all ages. It is a 6–7 hour day with an 08:30 pickup from your address and a Sámi lunch and coffee, so plan it after a rest day rather than straight after a late northern lights night.

Are private tours worth it for a family?

With a child under 7 they are the only way to do the aurora chase and the fjord tours. With six or more people the private northern lights tour costs about the same per head as shared — NOK 2,500 each with six — and comes with your own pickup and pace.

Do we get our money back if a child is ill?

On shared tours you get a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure; inside 48 hours the full price is charged. Private tours show their own cancellation terms on the booking page, so check them before you pay.

Our Honest Final Word

We are a family travel blog, and the most useful thing we can tell other parents about Tromsø is this: let the youngest child’s age choose the tours, and let their bedtime choose the format. With a child under seven, the private van is not an indulgence — it is how the whole family gets to see the lights. With older children, the shared tours are excellent and a fraction of the price. Either way, one tour a day and a rest day in the middle is what turns an expensive trip into a happy one.
