Wildlife on the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Fjord Tour: Reindeer, Sea Eagles and Whales — What Is Realistic

The operator lists reindeer, moose, sea eagles, seabirds and even whales on its Sommarøy & Kvaløya tour. Here is an honest look at what each of those means in practice, what we would hope for, and what we would not promise to a friend.

What the Operator Says You May See

According to Legendary Adventure’s tour description, Kvaløya is one of the region’s best wildlife areas. During the journey, you are invited to keep an eye out for reindeer grazing near the road, moose moving quietly through the forest, and seasonal whale sightings, including orcas and humpback whales during migration periods. The coastline is also described as a paradise for birdwatchers, with white-tailed sea eagles, cormorants and guillemots and other seabirds.

The important word in all of that is “may”. The operator itself says every day is different, and that is the honest framing. This is a scenic tour with wildlife possibilities, not a safari, and nobody can promise a particular animal.

Reindeer: The Most Plausible Sighting

Reindeer are the animal most likely to appear, because they graze across the island and often wander near roads in winter. If you see some, the guide will normally find a safe place to stop so you can watch from a distance. Treat them as wild or semi-wild animals: do not approach them or feed them.

If seeing and feeding reindeer is a priority, a different tour suits you better. The Private Reindeer Farm Visit with Reindeer Feeding & Sámi Culture5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is built around exactly that, and our private reindeer farm guide explains who it is for.

Sea Eagles and Seabirds: The Reliable Extra

Birdlife is often the most reliable wildlife on a coastal tour. White-tailed sea eagles are large and unmistakable, with a huge wingspan, and they patrol the fjords, while cormorants and guillemots use the rocky cliffs. The operator singles out Sommarøy’s cliffs as especially rich in birdlife.

Bring binoculars if you have them, and a camera with a decent zoom. A phone can capture a bird as a small dot but not as a portrait. Our photography guide to the Sommarøy tour offers more tips on shooting in winter light.

Moose and Whales: Hope, Don't Plan

Moose are shy and mostly forest animals, so seeing one is a lucky bonus, not a plan. Whales are even more variable. The operator mentions seasonal sightings of orcas and humpbacks during migration periods, and in northern Norway that season runs through the dark winter months, but sightings from the shore of a road tour are never guaranteed. If whales are your priority, the dedicated Private Whale Watching option runs from October to January, but it is a call-to-book trip priced at NOK 120,000 per group, so it is a very different purchase.

Our rule for friends: go for the fjords and beaches, treat any whale as a gift, and you will not be disappointed.

The Rest of the Day: Beaches, Lunch and Stories

The wildlife is only part of the day. The tour includes scenic stops at fjords and mountains, white-sand Arctic beaches and a lunch at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel by the sea, with local ingredients and vegan and vegetarian options available. Your guide also shares stories about fishing traditions, island life and local folklore as you pass through small villages.

It leaves at 10:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge and lasts 5 to 6 hours in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle with a small group of 2 to 8. For a family who wants their own vehicle, the Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group and takes all ages.

Seasons: When Wildlife Chances Change

The tour runs year-round, and what you see changes with the seasons. In the dark winter months the light is soft and blue, birds are visible on the open water and reindeer are often grazing near roads. In spring and summer, daylight grows, seabirds are more active and nesting, and the landscape is greener.

Whale sightings are tied to migration periods, and the operator describes them as seasonal. We would not choose a date purely for whales, because the tour is not a dedicated whale trip, but if you are visiting in the months when whales are in the area, it is a reasonable hope. For the whales themselves, the operator offers a private whale watching charter in October to January, which is a very different, much more expensive booking.

For a view of how the light changes, our polar night Sommarøy guide describes the winter version of the tour, and the summer version has the midnight sun to add its own character.

Photographing Wildlife: Realistic Kit and Tips

Wildlife photography on a group tour is a patient business. With a phone you can capture landscapes and animals at close range, but distant birds will be small. A camera with a telephoto lens of 200 mm or more gives better results on sea eagles and seabirds, and binoculars improve the experience for everyone.

A few tips: keep your camera warm and ready, switch to a fast shutter speed for flying birds, and be patient at stops. Listen to your guide, who knows where animals tend to appear and when it is safe to get out. Never approach wildlife for a better picture; the animals and the guide’s instructions come first.

If wildlife photography is your main aim, a private tour gives you more control. The Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15,000 per group takes all ages and lets you choose your pickup, and the guide can adapt the stops to your interests.
