How Private Tours Are Priced

Shared tours in Tromsø are priced per person. Private tours are priced per group. That one difference explains why a private tour can look expensive next to a shared one and then turn out to be reasonable for a large party. A shared northern lights tour at NOK 2,300 per person costs a family of six NOK 13,800. The private northern lights tour is NOK 15,000 for the whole group. Add two more guests and the private option becomes cheaper per head.

All prices below come from the operator’s tour listings. Most private tours are for 2–8 guests, with larger groups on request, and several let you choose a pickup location at checkout. The Ladder at a Glance

Some tours, such as the private whale watching trip, the snowmobile safari and the fjord cruise, are listed at higher prices and are booked by contacting the operator, so the online code does not apply to them.

Who Private Tours Are Really For

There are four situations in which we would look at a private tour. The first is a large group, six to eight people, where the per-head price is the same or lower than the shared tour. The second is a family with children under 7, where the shared tour is not recommended and the private version is listed for all ages. The third is a group with a special request, such as a particular pickup location, that a shared vehicle cannot offer. The fourth is a celebration, where the privacy is part of what you are paying for.

If none of those describes you, a shared tour is almost always better value. The shared tours are small by design, with 2–8 guests, so they are not crowded either.

The NOK 12,000 Tier: Snowshoes and Ersfjord

The cheapest private tours are three different experiences at the same price. For a family of six to eight, these come to NOK 1,500–2,000 per person, which is very close to the per-person price of the shared hikes. The private tour then buys you the group’s own pace for little extra. For two people they are poor value; a shared hike at NOK 1,500 per person is far cheaper.

The NOK 15,000 Tier: Northern Lights and Sommarøy

This is the tier most families should look at first. The all-ages rating matters. The shared versions of both tours are recommended for ages 7 and up, so a family with younger children has no shared option and a private tour is the sensible choice. Pickup is from the location you choose at checkout, which saves waiting in the cold.

At NOK 15,000, the cost per person drops fast as the group grows: about NOK 2,500 for six, NOK 2,143 for seven and NOK 1,875 for eight. Compare that with NOK 2,300 per person on the shared northern lights tour, and you can see where the break-even sits.

The Sámi Experiences: NOK 17,500 and NOK 22,500

These are the right choice for people who want culture rather than adrenaline. We would book one of them when the group is interested in how Sámi people live and want a quieter day than a fjord tour. The Big Splurges: Reindeer and Huskies

These are special-occasion prices, and they make sense for a large family trip, a milestone celebration or a group sharing the cost among eight. For most readers they are not the first purchase. If your budget is tight, a shared tour is a better use of the money.

Questions to Settle Before You Book

A private tour gives you more control, so it pays to decide a few things in advance. How many people are really coming? Prices are per group, so the number of guests is the whole calculation, and a group of four paying NOK 15,000 is paying NOK 3,750 each. Are there children under 7? If so, check that the tour you want is listed for all ages. Where will you be staying? Pickup is chosen at checkout on most private tours, so have your hotel or rental address ready.

Next, think about timing. Private tours still run on the operator’s schedule, so the pickup times in the listings, such as 19:00 for the private northern lights tour and 10:00 for the private Sommarøy fjord tour, are your starting point. Which We Would Book First

If you can only splurge once, we would choose the private northern lights tour for a group of six to eight, because the cost per person is close to the shared price and the evening is entirely yours. For a family with children under 7, the private Sommarøy fjord tour is the best-value all-ages day. For couples, we would skip private tours altogether and book the shared versions.
