Why the Two Weeks Before Christmas Are Worth Planning Carefully

Tromsø in December is a different trip from Tromsø in March. Around midwinter the sun stays below the horizon, and what you get instead is a soft blue twilight in the middle of the day and long, dark evenings. We know that rhythm from our own Arctic winters in Rovaniemi. For aurora hunters, the long darkness is the point: the sky is dark early, so you are not waiting around for it.

It also means the day is short, and that changes how you plan. You will not do three sightseeing stops between breakfast and lunch. Think of each day as one main thing, plus a long evening. This guide is built around that idea for the window of 7–23 December 2026, which is the stretch many readers ask us about when Christmas shopping, school holidays and cheap flights collide.

One caveat before we start. Nobody can promise you the northern lights on a given night, and we are not going to quote weather statistics we cannot source. What you can control is the number of evenings you give yourself, the tour you pick and how rested you are when you step into the minivan.

Week One, 7–13 December: Lock In the Aurora Night Early

7 December 2026 is a Monday, so this week runs Monday to Sunday. It is the quieter half of our window, which makes it the easiest place to put a flexible plan. If you arrive on the Monday or Tuesday, we would put the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on your first or second evening, not your last. The reason is simple: if the first night does not deliver, you still have evenings left to book another one. Arrive for three nights and put the tour on night one, and you keep night two or three as a second chance.

The operator’s tour is a small-group chase for 2–8 guests, and according to the operator the route is prepared from the latest weather forecasts and the guides’ knowledge of the area, so you may head inland or along the coast. We send friends on it because it is built around a chase rather than one fixed viewing spot. Pick-up is outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 18:30 (it was 19:00 before 25 October), and the tour lasts 5–8 hours, so plan to be out until somewhere between 23:30 and 02:30.

Use the daylight in this week for something unhurried. A slow morning, a walk by the harbour, a long lunch. Save your energy for the night.

Week Two, 14–20 December: The Busiest Dates in Our Window

14 December is the next Monday. This is the week we would book first, because Christmas travel pulls more visitors in as the month goes on and the small-group tours cap out at eight guests. We cannot give you a booking count and will not invent one, but the logic is plain: the closer you get to Christmas, the fewer people can fit into each departure.

If your trip lands here, do three things now rather than later:

  • Reserve your northern lights evening on the first night you are in town.
  • Check the private option if you are four or more, or travelling with children (more on that below).
  • Choose your daytime tour and place it on a different day from the aurora night.

Remember that the cancellation terms are strict: a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before, and a 100% charge inside 48 hours. That is fine for a plan you are sure of, but it also means you cannot treat a booking as a free option on the day itself. If your dates are not fixed, wait until they are. If they are, book now and enjoy a calmer November.

The Final Stretch, 21–23 December

21 December is a Monday, and 23 December is a Wednesday, which means Christmas Eve falls on the Thursday right after. If you are in Tromsø for the lead-up, you are making a choice most travellers do not: you are choosing to spend the days before Christmas somewhere dark and quiet rather than at home. That suits plenty of families, and it is a lovely way to spend them.

What we would do in these three days is keep the plan light. One aurora evening, one low-effort daytime outing, and nothing booked for the morning after a late return. If you are leaving on the 24th, check your flight time before you choose your aurora night, because a tour that finishes anywhere up to 02:30 does not combine well with an early departure. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is useful here, because the operator lists it for all ages and lets you choose your preferred pick-up location at checkout.

From the day we publish this, 7 December is 34 days away and 23 December is 50 days away, roughly five and seven weeks. That is a good moment to book, because you can still pick the night you want.

How to Combine the Northern Lights Tour With a Daytime Tour

The cleanest pairing is a daytime tour on one day and the aurora evening on another. Here is the maths, using the operator’s listed times. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 and lasts 5–6 hours, so you are back between 15:00 and 16:00. It costs NOK 2,100 per person and includes a local lunch. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 also picks up at 10:00, lasts 4 hours including the transfer, and costs NOK 1,500 per person, so you are back around 14:00.

If you do both on the same day, a 16:00 return from the fjord tour leaves about two and a half hours before the 18:30 aurora pick-up. That is possible, but it is a long day: from 10:00 to a 02:30 worst-case return is 16.5 hours. We would not recommend it for children or for the first full day after a flight.

The better pattern is the daytime tour first, aurora night after, and a slow morning next. If the aurora tour returns as late as 02:30, a 10:00 pick-up the next morning leaves you at most 7.5 hours to sleep, wash and eat. So we would put the fjord tour on a different day, ideally the day before the aurora night, when you are fresh and still have a clear head for the late evening.

Shared or Private: The Maths for Your Group

Both versions have the same inclusions: a local expert guide, a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The shared tour is NOK 2,300 per person. The private tour is NOK 15,000 per group of 2–8 guests, with a pick-up location of your choice at checkout and an all-ages policy.

The numbers, before any discount:

  • 2 people: shared NOK 4,600 versus private NOK 15,000
  • 4 people: shared NOK 9,200 versus private NOK 15,000
  • 6 people: shared NOK 13,800 versus private NOK 15,000
  • 7 people: shared NOK 16,100 versus private NOK 15,000
  • 8 people: shared NOK 18,400 versus private NOK 15,000 (NOK 1,875 per person)

So the private tour is cheaper from seven guests, and it costs more below that. For a family of four, the shared tour is NOK 5,800 cheaper, but families with very young children or mixed ages may value having the whole vehicle to themselves, and the shared tour recommends ages 7+. That is a personal call, and we would not push it either way.

What We Would Book for This Window

If you only want one thing: the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on night one, plus a spare evening. If you are four or more and want your own vehicle, check the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. If you want a gentler day, the fjord tour or the snowshoe hike go well on a day without a late night either side. For the rest of the options, see all Tromsø activities.

FAQ

When do I need to book the Northern Lights Tour for 7–23 December?

We would book now. From the publish date, 7 December is 34 days away and 23 December is 50 days away. Groups are limited to 2–8 guests, so choosing your date early gives you the most choice.

What time is the pick-up and where?

18:30 (19:00 before 25 October) outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. Look for a black Mercedes. The private tour lets you choose your pick-up location at checkout.

How much does it cost and what is included?

The shared tour is NOK 2,300 per person and the private tour is NOK 15,000 per group. Both include a local expert guide, a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. Book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off.

How late will I be back?

The tour lasts 5–8 hours. From an 18:30 pick-up, that means a return between about 23:30 and 02:30.

Can I cancel if the forecast looks poor?

Cancellation is a full refund more than 48 hours before the tour, and a 100% charge inside 48 hours. So we suggest booking once your dates are fixed, and giving yourself more than one evening.

Can children come on the Northern Lights Tour?

The shared tour recommends ages 7+. The private tour is listed for all ages.

Our Honest Final Word

The two weeks before Christmas suit travellers who like quiet, dark and cosy more than crowds. The plan is short: book the aurora evening first, early in your stay, with a spare evening behind it; put a daytime tour on a day with nothing late either side; and decide on shared or private by counting heads, because the private tour only becomes cheaper from seven guests. We have not done these tours ourselves yet, so everything here rests on the operator’s own details, and we send friends on the chase because that is how we would want to spend an evening in the north.
