The question we get most from friends planning a Lapland winter is not "what should we do?" It is "which of these should we book together, and what do we leave out?" StayLapland alone runs huskies, reindeer, snowmobiles, aurora tours, saunas, Santa visits, ice fishing and day trips, and every one of them looks like a must. Booking them one at a time, without a plan, is how people end up with three tours on one day and nothing on the next.

We live in Rovaniemi. Joona is a Finn who has spent years in Lapland tourism; Alla, originally from Ukraine, is an AI engineer who treats trip planning like an optimisation problem. Together we have boiled it down to a few pairing rules and three plans, for 3, 5 and 7 days, that we would actually choose for ourselves. Everything here can be booked together in one sitting.

Short answer

Book one big daytime activity and at most one evening activity per day, put your aurora tour on night one, and cover huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles in a single day with the Lapland Bucketlist Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €449 per adult, about 6 hours, lunch and photographer included). Our 3-day plan costs from €657 per adult, the 5-day plan from €945 and the 7-day plan from €1,253, and our 5% reader discount applies to every booking.

Our pairing rules: what goes together

Before any plan, the rules. These are what we tell every friend who visits, and every plan below follows them.

1. One big day activity, plus at most one evening activity. Husky, reindeer, snowmobile and day-trip tours usually take 3 to 6 hours including transfers. That is a full winter day. Pair it with an evening aurora tour if you like, but not with a second daytime tour.

2. Aurora early, never last. The Northern Lights need clear skies. Book your first aurora tour for night one or two so there are spare evenings if it is cloudy.

3. Mix a moving aurora tour with a fixed one. A hunting tour, which drives towards clearer skies, is your best shot. A campfire or sleigh evening, at a fixed site, is cosier and cheaper. One of each beats two of the same.

4. Group animals together when time is short. On a short trip, one combo day with huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles saves two extra pick-ups. On a longer trip, spreading them over separate days is more relaxed.

5. Keep slow activities for arrival and departure days. Ice fishing, sauna and Santa Claus Village are perfect bookends.

If you are still deciding on trip length, our comparison of 2, 3, 4 and 5 days in Rovaniemi will help. Then pick the plan below that fits.

The 3-day plan

Three days is short, so we combine. This plan gives you every classic Lapland experience plus two aurora evenings.

Day 1: arrive, then the aurora hunt

Keep the daytime free for arriving and checking in. In the evening, join the Guaranteed Northern Lights Hunting Tour by Bus5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €109, about 5 hours). The guides choose the route each night based on the weather, professional photos are included and you get a 100% refund if no aurora photos are captured.

Day 2: the Lapland Bucketlist Adventure

This is where combining pays off. The Lapland Bucketlist Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €449, about 6 hours) gives you about one hour of snowmobile driving, a 5 km self-driven husky sled ride, a 2–3 km reindeer sleigh ride, an open-fire salmon soup lunch in a teepee with drinks, and a photographer, all with pick-up within 10 km of the centre and winter clothing included. Groups are a maximum of 16. It is rated moderate, and there is no evening activity after it; you will not want one.

Day 3: Santa Claus Village and a campfire evening

Spend the day at Santa Claus Village on your own, then end the trip with the Northern Lights Tour At The Campfire5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €99, about 3 hours), a cosy fixed-site evening with snacks and hot drinks by the fire. If the first night was cloudy, this is your second chance.

3-day total: from €657 per adult.

The 5-day plan

With five days, keep the 3-day backbone and add two slower, very Finnish experiences, with space to breathe.

Days 1 to 3: as above

Aurora hunting tour on night one, the Bucketlist Adventure on day two, a free day with the campfire aurora evening on day three. With two more days ahead, the campfire night is now a comfortable middle-of-the-trip second chance rather than a last-minute one.

Day 4: slow day, sauna evening

Sleep in. In the late afternoon, go for the Private Wooden Heated Sauna and Ice Swimming5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199 per person, about 4 hours): a wood-heated sauna to yourselves, a hand-cut ice hole for the cold plunge, instructions, towels, snacks, winter clothing and transfers. It is a private booking for at least two people.

Day 5: ice fishing before your flight

The Ice Fishing at Private Kuoksa lake5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 tour (from €89, about 3.5 hours) is calm, short and includes thermal clothing, all equipment, snacks and drinks and pick-up. It is the perfect departure-day activity.

5-day total: from €945 per adult.

The 7-day plan

A full week lets you add a proper nature day and a Santa experience, while keeping two quiet days.

Days 1 to 3: the same strong start

Aurora hunt, Bucketlist Adventure, a free day with the campfire evening.

Day 4: Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Hike

The Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €139, about 6 hours) takes you to a nature reserve where waterfalls freeze solid. Ice grippers, winter clothing, berry juice and light snacks are included. It is rated challenging; if that is not for you, the Ranua Wildlife Zoo Park Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €139, lunch included) is the easier day out.

Day 5: rest, then sauna

A slow morning, then the private sauna and ice swim in the evening.

Day 6: Santa Claus Village Tour

The guided Santa Claus Village Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €169, about 5 hours) includes meeting Santa Claus, a local lunch, winter clothing and transport. Families with young believers may prefer the private visit in section 7.

Day 7: ice fishing and home

Finish with the calm Kuoksa ice fishing morning before your flight.

7-day total: from €1,253 per adult.

If you only book 2, 3 or 4 activities

  • 2 activities: the aurora hunting tour and the Lapland Bucketlist Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. That covers the sky, the huskies, the reindeer and a snowmobile, which is most of what people picture when they imagine Lapland.
  • 3 activities: add the campfire evening as your second aurora chance.
  • 4 activities: add the private sauna and ice swim. It is the one experience on this list that feels truly Finnish rather than touristy, and it is the one we recommend most to visiting friends.

Book the Bucketlist day if you want everything with the least planning. Skip it if anyone in your group is nervous about driving a snowmobile or a husky team; in that case the calmer Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 plus an aurora sleigh evening is the gentler pair.

Combo tour or separate tours? The honest maths

We would never tell you a combo is a bargain when it is not, so here are the actual "from" prices per adult.

So why book a combo? Because on a short trip, time is the scarce resource, not money. One combo day means one pick-up instead of three, the salmon soup lunch and photographer are included, and the other days are free for aurora, sauna and rest. On a week-long trip, separate tours spread over several mornings are more relaxed and give you longer with each animal. That is why our 3- and 5-day plans use the Bucketlist Adventure, and why a 7-day traveller who loves animals could swap it for separate tours on separate days.

Upgrades and swaps by budget

Spend more on the sky. Swap the bus for the Small Group Northern Lights Hunting Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199): 2 to 8 people, usually 4 to 10 hours, DSLR photos and a 100% refund if no aurora photos are captured.

Spend more on driving. If snowmobiling is your favourite part, add the Wilderness Snowmobile Safari5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199, about 2 to 2.5 hours of driving and an open-fire lunch) to the 7-day plan in place of the Korouoma hike.

A private Santa moment. Families with small children can replace the village tour with the Magical Private Santa Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €249, about 1.5 hours), with a 30-minute private meeting and a gift for each child.

Spend less. On the 3-day plan, replace the Bucketlist Adventure with the Kuoksa Reindeer & Snowmobile combo (from €249) and you are at €457 per adult, losing only the huskies, the lunch and the photographer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book several Rovaniemi activities on the same day?
Yes, but limit it to one daytime activity and one evening activity. Most winter tours take 3 to 6 hours including pick-up, and stacking two daytime tours usually means rushing and getting cold.

Is a combo tour cheaper than booking activities separately?
Not by much. The Lapland Bucketlist Adventure costs from €449, while the Nulkki husky tour, Kuoksa reindeer tour and a 1-hour snowmobile ride booked separately come to €447. The combo wins on convenience, lunch and the included photographer, not on price.

Which activity should we book first?
The aurora tour for your first or second night, because it needs back-up nights. Then the big animal day. Everything else fits around those two.

How many activities do we need for 3 days?
Two or three is ideal: one aurora tour, one big animal or snowmobile day and, if you have energy, a second evening by a campfire.

Are the plans suitable for children?
Many of the tours accept children, but rules vary. The Bucketlist Adventure is not suitable for children under 3, and children shorter than 140 cm ride in a sled pulled by the guide rather than on the snowmobile. Check each tour before booking.

Does the 5% discount work on combo tours too?
Yes. Type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout to get 5% off; it works on every activity you book, combos included.

Our final pick

Whatever your trip length, the two bookings that matter most are an aurora hunting tour on your first night and the Lapland Bucketlist Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 as your big day. The first protects your Northern Lights chances; the second gives you huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles with one pick-up, a warm lunch and someone else taking the photos. Add a campfire evening for three days, a sauna and an ice-fishing morning for five, and a frozen-waterfalls hike and Santa for seven.

Book the whole plan together now, and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off each activity.
