Northern Lights in Tromsø in February 2027: Returning Daylight, Dark Evenings and What to Book
February is one of the most popular months to visit Tromsø: the sun is back, the evenings are still properly dark and the days are long enough for real daytime tours. Here is how we would plan a February 2027 trip around the northern lights, with the Legendary Adventure tours that fit.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
February is a strong month for the northern lights in Tromsø because the nights are long and dark, while the daylight returns and makes the days far more usable than in December. Why February Is a Favourite Month
Ask Tromsø regulars which month they would choose and many will say February or March, and there is a good reason. The polar night is over, so the sun climbs back above the horizon and the days lengthen quickly through the month, yet the evenings are still dark early enough for an aurora tour to start at a sensible hour. That combination, daylight to enjoy and darkness to chase, is hard to beat.
It is also a month with a good mix of conditions. The weather is still wintery, with plenty of snow for the snowshoe tours, and the fjords look their best in lower, golden light. For the lights themselves, the main ingredient is clear sky and some solar activity, which no month can promise. What February offers is a long run of dark evenings in which to try.
For comparison with the deepest winter months, see our guides to Tromsø in January and November.
February 2027: Holidays That Shape Demand
Two things make February busy. Many European countries and regions have a mid-winter school break, and the UK half-term falls in mid-February. And in 2027, Chinese New Year falls on 6 February, which sends travellers from China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan to northern destinations. Tromsø is high on that list.
For you, the practical effect is that popular nights fill up. A small-group tour takes only 2 to 8 guests, so a busy week can sell out several departures. Our advice is simple: if your dates are fixed by a school break or a holiday, book the aurora tour as soon as you have booked your flights, not when you arrive.
How the Evening Works in February
The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks you up outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October; check your confirmation for the time on your date). The tour lasts 5 to 8 hours, and the guides choose the route from the weather forecast and their local knowledge, heading inland or along the coast to find clear sky. Included are a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks, in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle with a small group of 2 to 8.

In February you are likely to need the winter suit, because it is still deeply cold when you stand still outside. Layer under it with wool and bring warm boots and a hat. Our what to wear in Tromsø guide has the full list.
Pairing a February Day Tour With a Night Chase
Because daytime is usable again, February is the month to do more than one tour. A classic day looks like this: a morning activity, a rest in the afternoon, and the chase in the evening. The shared options that fit neatly are below.
| Tour | Time | Price | Why in February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arctic Snowshoe Hike | 10:00, 4 hours | NOK 1,500 per person | Snow and returning light |
| Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour | 10:00, 5 to 6 hours | NOK 2,100 per person | Coastal scenery in better light |
| Northern Lights Tour | 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October), 5 to 8 hours | NOK 2,300 per person | Long dark evenings |
Do not stack the day tour on the same day as the chase if you can avoid it; a 10:00 start after a night that finishes at 01:00 is tiring. Our fjord tour and northern lights pairing guide goes into the sequencing.

Photographers like February for the variety. You can shoot snow-covered mountains and fjords in daylight and the sky at night, and the longer days give you more usable hours. If you want to try the lights with a camera, bring a tripod, spare batteries (the cold drains them) and extra layers for your hands.
Phone users are not left out; modern phones can capture the lights with a night mode if you steady them. Our phone and camera settings guide explains the settings. Remember that a guide cannot guarantee the lights and a photo shows more than your eye often does, so manage expectations.
Group Tour or Private Chase?
If your February trip is a couple’s holiday or a trip with friends, the shared tour is usually the right size. If you are a family, or a group of six to eight friends, the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 15,000 per group of up to eight, takes all ages and picks you up wherever you choose at checkout. For eight people that works out below the price of eight shared seats, and you get a vehicle and a pace of your own. Our cost per person guide for 6 to 8 friends does the maths.

February Weather: Cold, Snow and What to Wear
February in Tromsø is cold but not extreme on the coast, with plenty of snow and changeable weather. It can be calm and clear one day and stormy the next, and the wind is often the biggest factor in how cold you feel. Inland, where chases often go to find clear sky, it is colder than in the town.
That is why layering matters. Wear a wool or synthetic base layer, a warm mid layer and an outer shell, with insulated boots, a hat and good gloves. On the northern lights tours you are given a winter suit as well, which is very warm for standing still. On daytime tours such as the snowshoe hike and the fjord tour you wear your own clothes, so dress for several hours outdoors.
Take a small backpack with a thermos, spare gloves and a power bank for your phone. Our what to wear guide gives the full list. Do not forget sunglasses for the bright snow on clear days, since the returning sun makes glare a real factor.
A Sample February Itinerary
Here is how we would plan four nights in February, assuming you want the lights and a couple of daytime tours without exhausting yourself.
- Night 1: arrive, settle in, an early dinner and an early night. Resist the temptation to chase on the evening of arrival.
- Day 2: the 10:00 Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, back around 14:00, then rest. In the evening, the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 if the forecast looks promising.
- Day 3: a slow morning, then wander the town, visit a café and prepare for another try at the lights if the first night was cloudy.
- Day 4: the 10:00 Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 with lunch, and a calm evening.
The idea is to keep the chase on a night with a spare behind it and never put an early start straight after a late finish. If you want the full day-by-day structure, our 3 days in Tromsø itinerary can be adapted for February.

FAQ
Is February a good month for the northern lights in Tromsø?
Yes. Evenings are dark and long, while daylight returns for daytime tours. The lights depend on clear sky and solar activity, so no month is guaranteed.
How much is the northern lights tour?
Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 2,300 per person. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off.
When should I book for February?
As early as your dates are fixed, especially around the UK half-term and Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027, because small groups fill up.
What is included in the tour?
A local expert guide, transport in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks.
Can I do a day tour as well?
Yes. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike and Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour both start at 10:00, so book them on a different day from the chase if possible.
How many nights should I stay?
At least three, with the aurora tour on night two or three, so one cloudy night does not end the trip.
Our Honest Final Word
February gives you the best of both worlds: real daylight for the mountains and fjords, and long dark evenings for the sky. The only real risk is that it is popular, so book the chase early and give yourself a spare night.
