The short answer: from six people, the private van is a serious option

A shared northern lights chase is priced per person. A private one is priced per vehicle. That simple difference is why a group of friends should do the maths before booking, because the line where private becomes cheaper than shared falls just below the vehicle’s capacity.

At eight guests, the private tour is cheaper per person and entirely yours. At seven it costs NOK 2,143 each, slightly less than the shared price. At six, it costs NOK 2,500 each, a little more than shared, but with control. Below six, the shared tour wins on price, and you decide whether control is worth the difference.

We live in Rovaniemi and have organised group trips to the Arctic for friends many times. What we always notice is that the cost matters less than the coordination. With a private vehicle, there is one booking, one time and one pickup, and nobody has to hope they can all get seats on the same shared departure.

The cost-per-person table

Group sizeShared tour totalPrivate tour totalPrivate per person
2NOK 4,600NOK 15,000NOK 7,500
4NOK 9,200NOK 15,000NOK 3,750
5NOK 11,500NOK 15,000NOK 3,000
6NOK 13,800NOK 15,000NOK 2,500
7NOK 16,100NOK 15,000NOK 2,143
8NOK 18,400NOK 15,000NOK 1,875

The shared price is NOK 2,300 per person and the private price is NOK 15,000 per group of 2–8 guests, both from the operator’s tour pages. The break-even is between six and seven people. With the 5% reader discount applied, the private total comes to NOK 14,250 and the eight-person price to about NOK 1,781 each.

Larger groups are possible on request, according to the operator’s page, so if you are nine or ten, it is worth asking about two vehicles or a custom arrangement.

What control actually buys you

The price is only half the story. A private vehicle changes the evening in four ways.

  • Pickup: the shared tour leaves outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 18:30 from 25 October. The private tour lets you choose the pickup location at checkout, so a group split across different hotels or apartments can be collected where it suits.
  • Timetable: the private tour is listed at 19:00. The group, not strangers, shares the pace, which matters if you want a longer stop for pictures or a slow dinner break.
  • Company: you are the only guests, so the van is as lively or as quiet as you like.
  • Ages: the private tour is open to all ages, while the shared tour is recommended from age 7.

The inclusions are the same as for the shared tour: a local expert guide, transportation in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. So you do not lose anything by going private.

How to split the bill without arguments

Group trips often fall apart over money, not over the northern lights. A few habits make it easier.

  1. Decide the booking person early. One person pays and the others transfer their share the same day.
  2. Agree on the total including the discount. With HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 applied, the private total is NOK 14,250, which divides cleanly for most group sizes.
  3. Send the pickup details together. Choose the location at checkout and share it with everyone.
  4. Check dietary needs. The tour includes a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks, so tell the operator in advance if someone has restrictions.
  5. Keep a buffer. If someone drops out, the group still pays the same total, so agree what happens to the share.

Because the price is per group, losing a member does not reduce the cost. That is a risk with a group of mixed commitment, and one reason to confirm numbers before booking.

When the shared tour is still the better choice

We do not want to push everyone to private. The shared Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a better fit when you are two to four people, when budget is the main issue, or when you enjoy meeting other travellers. It is a small-group chase with 2–8 guests, so it is already far smaller than a coach tour.

It is also the right choice if your group is not yet settled. If you are not sure whether five or eight people will come, the shared tour has no cliff when someone drops out. Everyone pays for their own seat.

For groups of five or six, it is a close call. At six, private is NOK 2,500 per person against NOK 2,300 shared, a difference of NOK 200 each, or NOK 1,200 in total. If you value having your own vehicle, that difference is small.

Cancellation and timing for a group booking

For the shared tours, the operator allows free cancellation more than 48 hours before departure and charges the full price inside 48 hours. For the private tour, check the terms on the booking page, because the conditions can differ for private departures, and a group booking is a bigger sum to protect.

The practical rule is to book early in your stay. If you arrive on a Friday and leave on a Monday, put the chase on the first or second evening so that a cloudy night leaves you another chance. A private vehicle can often be rebooked more flexibly than a seat on a full shared departure, but that depends on availability.

For groups, also think about the return time. The tour lasts 5–8 hours, and a group of eight tired friends at 02:00 is a different thing from two travellers. If you have early morning plans, keep the next day free.

A sample evening for a group of eight

Eight people in a vehicle is a different dynamic from a couple, so it helps to picture the evening. This is an illustration based on the operator’s published format, not a fixed schedule, because the guide shapes the route on the day.

  • 17:30: everyone meets at the agreed pickup point, dressed in warm layers with phones charged.
  • 19:00: the vehicle collects the group. The guide explains the plan, the forecast and the safety basics while you drive.
  • Evening: the guide drives toward clear sky, which can mean inland valleys or the Finnish or Swedish side. You stop where the view is good, put on the winter suits and wait.
  • Mid-evening: a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks, often outdoors by a fire if conditions allow.
  • Late: if the lights appear, the group stays as long as it wants. If not, the guide may try another spot.
  • Return: anywhere from late evening to the small hours, depending on the chase.

The big advantage of a private van here is patience. A group of friends can decide together to wait another half hour, or to leave early because the youngest is exhausted. In a shared vehicle, that decision belongs to the guide and the mix of strangers.

Bring a portable speaker only if the guide agrees, and keep the volume low, because sound carries on still nights and other groups may be nearby. Most groups find the quiet is part of the experience anyway.

Pairing it with other private tours

A group that books one private vehicle often wants a second private experience in the same trip. The Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 12,000 per group for 4 hours, ages 10+ recommended. The Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group for 5–6 hours and open to all ages. The Private Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 12,000 for 3–4 hours. Together with a private chase, these make a complete group itinerary built around your own timetable.

For eight people, each of these private options works out at NOK 1,500–1,875 per person, which is competitive with the shared prices. See our Tromsø activities guide for the full range.
