Why late January works

Late January is still deep winter in Tromsø, with long nights and the sun slowly returning. The light begins to come back, so days are brighter than in December, but nights are still long enough for plenty of aurora hours. It is also one of the coldest times, so dress seriously.

Compared with December there are fewer holiday crowds, and tours are easier to find. It is a month many photographers like because snow cover is usually good and the landscape looks its best.

Week by week: 11–17, 18–24 and 25–31 January

The week of 11–17 January is the quiet week after the holiday rush: good availability and winter in full swing. 18–24 January sits in the middle of the season, popular with travellers who booked a winter break. 25–31 January has noticeably more daylight, which makes daytime tours more enjoyable.

None of these weeks is a guaranteed aurora week. Weather decides, so what matters is how many nights you give the chase. Two nights is our recommendation; three if aurora is the main goal.

The shared chase in January

The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 departs at 18:30, travels in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle with a local guide, and includes a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. NOK 2,300 per person for 5–8 hours.

In January it can be very cold, so use the winter suit and your own base layers. The guides choose the route from forecasts, which in January often means going inland or across the border to find clear sky.

The private chase in January

The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 15,000 per group for up to 8 guests, with pickup at 19:00 from your chosen location. It is the same format, in your own vehicle. For families with children under 7, who are below the shared tour’s recommended age, it is the way to join.

Cold: what to wear in January

Layering is the secret: a wool base layer, a warm mid-layer, thick socks, a hat that covers your ears, a neck warmer and warm gloves with liners. The tour provides a winter suit, which goes over your own layers.

Bring hand warmers, a power bank and a thermos if you like. Phones lose battery quickly in the cold, so keep yours inside a pocket.

Pairing the chase with daytime tours

With more daylight in late January, the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a lovely day: NOK 2,100 per person, 5–6 hours, ages 7+, pickup 10:00. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 1,500, 4 hours, ages 10+.

Keep a rest day between a late chase and an early tour, and avoid double-booking the same day.

When to book

Bookings come in 4–8 weeks ahead for many travellers, but you can book closer to the date. If your dates are fixed and the aurora matters, book as soon as you can, and then keep one night free for a second attempt.

The shared tour terms give a full refund more than 48 hours before departure and a full charge inside 48 hours, so you have some flexibility.
