Why a northern lights night suits a friends' trip

Friend trips usually fail for one of two reasons: too much planning, or no shared moment. A northern lights night fixes both. It is one booking, one pickup, and an experience everyone talks about at the airport. It also works for mixed interests, since nobody needs to be sporty or love the cold. You stand under the sky, drink something hot, and take far too many photos of each other.

We live in Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland, and when friends visit us the aurora night is the one thing they ask about first. Tromsø is one of the best-known places in Europe to do it, and the operator Legendary Adventure runs small-group and private chases from the city centre.

This guide is for groups of three to six planning a birthday, a reunion or a winter break together. We have not yet taken this tour ourselves, so the details below come from the operator’s tour pages, not from a personal review.

Shared tour: how it works for a group of friends

The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 takes 2–8 guests per departure and costs NOK 2 300 per person. It is for ages 7+, lasts 5–8 hours, and picks up outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October). The operator uses premium Mercedes-Benz vehicles and includes a local expert guide, a winter suit, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks.

The important point for friends is that a shared departure may include other guests, so you may not have the vehicle to yourselves. Groups of three or four can book several seats on the same departure and share the van with a few other travellers. That keeps the cost low and the atmosphere social, and some friends actually enjoy meeting people from other countries.

If your group is larger than eight, the operator says larger groups are available on request, so contact them before you book.

Private tour: the maths for five, six or eight

The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15 000 per group, for all ages, with a pickup location you choose during checkout. Here is the arithmetic. With four people it is NOK 3 750 each. With five, NOK 3 000 each. With six, NOK 2 500 each. With eight, NOK 1 875 each.

Now compare that with the shared tour at NOK 2 300 per person. At six people the private tour costs only NOK 200 more per head than the shared one, and at seven or eight it is cheaper per person. That is why the private tour deserves a look for bigger groups, even when it feels like a luxury. You also choose the pace, you can ask the guide anything, and nobody is waiting for strangers.

For a group of two or three, the shared tour is the better value. For four, it is a judgement call and depends on whether you want a van to yourselves.

A simple table to decide

Group sizeShared tour (NOK 2 300 pp), group totalPrivate tour (NOK 15 000), per person
3 friendsNOK 6 900NOK 5 000
4 friendsNOK 9 200NOK 3 750
5 friendsNOK 11 500NOK 3 000
6 friendsNOK 13 800NOK 2 500
8 friendsNOK 18 400NOK 1 875

Prices are the starting prices on the operator’s pages and can change, so always check the booking calendar for your date. The private column is the group price divided by the number of people, which is the fairest way to compare.

Planning the birthday: timing and surprises

If the trip is for a birthday, book the aurora night early in the stay, not on the birthday itself. The sky decides, and a birthday night with cloud is a lot of pressure. A better plan is to book the tour on the second or third night and keep the birthday dinner flexible.

Telling the guide in advance is a friendly gesture, and we would send the operator a short note after booking. We cannot promise any special treatment, since the tour page does not mention it, but guides generally appreciate knowing why a group is celebrating.

Keep the cold in mind when you plan the group photo. Hands get cold fast, so agree on one person with warm gloves and a steady phone, and take the picture early in the night before fingers stiffen. A winter suit is included, which helps with the rest.

Making it a weekend: what else friends can add

Aurora is the headline, but a weekend needs variety. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a daytime option at NOK 2 100 per person, 5–6 hours, with lunch included. The Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 1 500 per person is an evening walk for ages 10+, which is a different kind of night out. If you are staying three or more nights, the itinerary guides inside our Tromsø activities hub show how the pieces fit.

Avoid overpacking the schedule. A long chase can finish late, and tired friends are not happy friends. One aurora night, one daytime tour and one free evening is a good rhythm for a long weekend.

Money, splitting costs and who books

Group trips need one organiser and a clear way to split costs. Our suggestion is to let one person book on the operator’s page, then split the total in a banking app on the same day. For the private tour, divide the group price by the number of people, and agree in advance what happens if someone drops out before the cancellation window closes.

Do not forget that the reader discount applies to the booking price when you enter the code, so the organiser should type it before paying. Our code gives 5% off, which on a NOK 15 000 private booking is real money for a group.

How to book for a group

Open the booking calendar, select your date and choose the number of guests. For the shared tour, the number of seats you reserve matters, since each departure holds 2–8 guests and popular dates can fill. If you are more than eight people, contact the operator.

To book, open the live calendar through the links on this page, choose your date, and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 into the promo-code field at checkout for 5% off. If you book the private tour, you choose the pickup location during checkout.

The cancellation rule we know of is a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure, and a 100% charge inside 48 hours. Check the current terms on the booking page before you pay.

A transparency note: we are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a small commission when you book through our links. It never changes your price.
