Is Tromsø Expensive? A Tour-by-Tour Budget Guide for Winter 2026–2027

Norway has a reputation for high prices, and Tromsø in winter is no exception. But the tours, which are the main thing you pay for, vary a lot in price per person. We lay out what Legendary Adventure charges, how to plan a 3-night budget, where the savings are and how to book with our 5% reader discount.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.

Short answer

Tromsø is expensive by most visitors’ standards, but the tour range is less extreme than the headlines suggest. Legendary Adventure’s cheapest shared tours are NOK 1,250 (the summer e-bike tour) and NOK 1,500 (the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5), while the headline Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 2,300. A three-tour winter plan for two people costs about NOK 11,800 before the discount. Private tours become good value from about six guests. What We Can and Cannot Tell You About Costs

A budget guide is only as good as its numbers, so we want to be explicit about the scope. We can give you exact prices for tours, because Legendary Adventure publishes them and we have them in front of us. We cannot give you reliable numbers for flights, hotels, restaurants or transport, because those change daily and vary by season and booking date. So this guide is a tours budget, with general advice on the rest.

That is not as limiting as it sounds. In a typical winter trip to Tromsø, tours are the largest single group of expenses after flights and accommodation, and they are the part where planning makes the biggest difference. All the prices below are in Norwegian kroner and come directly from the operator’s tour pages. Our guide to tour prices for 2026 and 2027 covers the full list in more depth.

Even without exact numbers, the shape of a Tromsø budget is predictable. Flights and accommodation take the biggest share, especially around Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays. Food is expensive by most visitors’ home standards, which is why tours that include a meal, such as the northern lights chase and the Sommarøy fjord day, are good value on a per-hour basis. Local transport is modest compared with the rest. Treat our tour numbers as the fixed part of your budget and add the rest from live prices on the day you book.

The Shared Tour Price List

These are the shared tours, priced per person, ordered from cheapest to most expensive.

The spread is not as big as it first looks. The cheapest winter tour is NOK 1,500, the most expensive shared tour is NOK 2,300, and the bestsellers sit in between. Those prices apply per person, so a couple pays double, and a family of four pays four times.

A Three-Tour Plan for Two People

Here is how the numbers add up for a couple spending three or four nights in winter.

PlanToursTotal for 2 (before 5% off)
LeanNorthern Lights Tour onlyNOK 4,600
ClassicNorthern Lights Tour + Ersfjord & GrøtfjordNOK 7,600
FullNorthern Lights Tour + Sommarøy & Kvaløya + Arctic Snowshoe HikeNOK 11,800

The 5% reader discount takes NOK 230 off the lean plan, NOK 380 off the classic and NOK 590 off the full plan. That is not life-changing, but it is a free saving on money you were going to spend anyway. If you book an evening hike instead of the snowshoe hike, the totals do not change, since both are NOK 1,500.

Our advice for a tight budget is to spend on the chase first, because it is the experience people travel to Tromsø for, then add the cheapest daytime tour that interests you.

If you have a fourth night, the cheapest way to use it is a second chance at the sky rather than a fourth tour. The cancellation rule, a full refund more than 48 hours before, makes that easier to manage. You can keep one evening open, watch the forecast and decide a couple of days ahead. A flexible plan is also a cheaper plan, because you only pay for what you actually do.

A Family of Four: Shared vs Private

Families have more to think about because shared prices multiply while private prices are per vehicle.

TourShared, family of 4Private, up to 8
Northern lights chaseNOK 9,200NOK 15,000
Sommarøy & Kvaløya fjord tourNOK 8,400NOK 15,000
Ersfjord & Grøtfjord fjord tourNOK 6,000NOK 12,000
Snowshoe hike (ages 10+)NOK 6,000NOK 12,000

With four people, shared is cheaper on every tour. The case for private is the age limit and the flexibility, not the money. If your child is under seven, the private chase at NOK 15,000 may be your only option, and it becomes better value if you travel with grandparents or friends to reach six to eight guests. Our guide to private tours for families and groups explains where the break-even sits.

It is also worth noting how the maths change with a larger family or group. A family of five on the shared chase pays NOK 11,500 and on the private chase NOK 15,000, a gap of NOK 3,500. A family of six pays NOK 13,800 against NOK 15,000, a gap of only NOK 1,200, and for that the group gets the whole vehicle, a pickup at their door and no age limit. If you are travelling with grandparents or another family, ask yourself whether the extra NOK 200 per person is worth the control. For many groups it is.

Where the Premium Tours Sit

Legendary Adventure also runs some tours that are an order of magnitude more expensive. They are private only, and aimed at groups with larger budgets.

The operator also lists private snowmobile, whale watching and fjord cruise days, which are booked by enquiry. We do not give prices for those, and our discount code does not apply to them.

These are worth it for the right group, but for most readers of a budget guide, they are a stretch. Split between eight people, the reindeer day is NOK 4,375 each and the husky day NOK 11,875 each.

Seven Ways to Spend Less on Tours

Without compromising what you see, there are sensible ways to trim the bill.

  1. Start with the chase. It is the best-known product and the one most visitors regret skipping.
  2. Pick the half-day fjord tour. The Ersfjord & Grøtfjord tour at NOK 1,500 covers fjord scenery for NOK 600 less than the full Sommarøy day.
  3. Choose the snowshoe hike for activity. It is NOK 1,500 and includes equipment and transport.
  4. Use the reader code. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off any tour booked online.
  5. Fill a private vehicle. If you are six or more, private can match or beat the shared total.
  6. Travel outside peak weeks. Accommodation is typically cheaper outside Christmas and New Year, so check dates in November, early December, late January and March against your tour plan.
  7. Skip the extras you will not use. The more expensive tours are for specific travellers, not required for a good trip.

One last point on timing. The best-value tours are not necessarily the ones with the lowest price tag but the ones that make the rest of your trip better. A fjord tour on your first afternoon, when you are tired from travelling, gives you a relaxed start. A chase on the second night, after a rest, gives you more energy for the late hours. Matching the tour to your energy is the cheapest improvement you can make.

What the Tour Prices Include

Part of judging whether Tromsø is expensive is knowing what you are paying for. Several of Legendary Adventure’s tours include extras that would otherwise cost money.

  • The Northern Lights Tour includes a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks.
  • The Sommarøy & Kvaløya tour includes a local lunch at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.
  • The Arctic Snowshoe Hike includes snowshoes, poles and transport.
  • The Aurora Snowshoe Hike includes snowshoe rental, snacks and a hot drink.
  • The private fjord tour from Ersfjord includes a coffee or tea and a cinnamon bun.

When you compare these with the cost of renting a winter suit, buying a meal and paying for transport separately, the tour prices look more reasonable. That is not a promise that every tour is cheap, but it explains why the per-person price is what it is.
