How Far Ahead Should You Book a Proposal or Wedding in Lapland? A Realistic Timeline, Month by Month
Lapland dates do not all fill at the same speed: Christmas goes first, February and March follow, and a quiet Tuesday in November may be free a week before. We run Rovaniemi Weddings, so we watch the calendar every day. Here is our honest lead-time guide for proposals, elopements and full weddings, and what to do first.

For a proposal, write to us as early as you know your travel dates; the earlier the better, because the date you want is more likely to be free, but last-minute proposals are happily taken if the date is available. For a wedding, start 12–18 months ahead for December–March, 9–12 months ahead for a summer midnight sun wedding, and 8–12 months ahead for an ice or snow venue in January–February. For the paperwork, start gathering documents three to four months before the date. Our guidance comes from the Lapland Wedding Planner page and the Getting Married in Finland page. The Short Answer, by Type of Celebration
Everything in Lapland depends on the season, the venue and the size of the party, so here is a quick overview before the detail.
| What | Ideal lead time | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Proposal | As early as you know your dates; days are possible | One evening, flexible; popular dates fill first |
| Proposal at Christmas or New Year | Several months | The busiest weeks of the year |
| Elopement or small wedding, winter | 6–12 months | Premium venues fill; paperwork takes time |
| Ice or snow venue wedding, January–February | 8–12 months | Premium venues like the Arctic SnowHotel fill quickly |
| Full wedding, December–March | 12–18 months | Aurora season demand; many suppliers to coordinate |
| Midnight sun wedding | 9–12 months | Peak summer demand |
| Photographer for peak months | 8–12 months | December–March and June–July book out |
Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and these numbers are the ones we repeat to couples every month. They are guidance, not rules; if your date is closer than this, write to us anyway.
Proposals: Early Is Better, but Last Minute Often Works
A proposal is one evening, so it is the easiest thing in this guide to fit in. We say ‘the earlier the better’ because the date you have in mind is more likely to be free, and because it gives us time to talk about your story, think of a cover story and arrange the photographer. But last-minute proposals are happily taken too if the date is available.

When it is tight, flexible choices help. Right Where You Are (from €650) and A Thousand Petals (from €700) are set up within 30 km of Rovaniemi and depend on fewer other people. The Fireside Proposal (from €1,400) on private land works year-round. Yes Under the Aurora (from €1,500) depends on a guide and photographer who are also booked by other couples. The most booked-out dates are Christmas, New Year, Valentine’s week and the clear February and March weekends. For the festive weeks, see our Christmas and New Year proposal guide and the week before Christmas booking guide.
Weddings: The 12–18 Month Rule, and Where It Comes From
Most couples plan over 6–12 months, and for December–March we recommend starting 12–18 months before. The reasons are practical.
- Venues. Premium venues like the Arctic SnowHotel fill quickly for January and February.
- Suppliers. Photographers, florists, caterers and officiants have a limited number of winter dates; book the photographer 8–12 months ahead for December–March.
- Guests. Your guests need to book flights and accommodation. Glass igloos and Northern Lights tours fill well ahead for December–February.
- Paperwork. Start gathering documents three to four months before the date. The examination of impediments takes about seven working days, but can be several weeks for international applicants.
For summer weddings under the midnight sun, plan 9–12 months ahead. The best window is early June to mid-July, with temperatures of 15–25 °C. Our Lapland Wedding Planner page describes the stages in more detail.
A Timeline You Can Copy
This is the schedule we give couples who are planning a winter wedding of around 20–50 guests.

- 12–18 months before. Choose the season and the rough budget, and write to us. Hold a consultation. See our Lapland Wedding Cost page for the ranges.
- 9–12 months before. Agree the venue, sign the agreement and pay the deposit that secures the date. Book the photographer and, if needed, the videographer.
- 6–9 months before. Guests receive save-the-dates; accommodation and flights are booked. We source the florals, décor and supplier team.
- 3–4 months before. Start the paperwork for the legal wedding: passports, certificate of no impediment, translations, apostille where required.
- 1–2 months before. Final guest numbers, the menu, the timeline, the weather plan.
- The week before. Arrive in Rovaniemi a few days early, rest and test the clothes.
Allow around 10% of your budget for contingency.

Peak Dates and Quiet Dates: When Things Go Early
The calendar is uneven, so choose your dates knowing which are crowded.

- Busiest: the Christmas and New Year fortnight, February weekends and Valentine’s week, and June–July for midnight sun weddings.
- Strong demand: the winter aurora season generally, December–March.
- Quieter and often easier: early December before the Christmas rush, November, and the spring and autumn shoulder months. Spring and autumn often have more competitive pricing.
If you have no strong preference, a weekday in early December or in March is easier to arrange than a weekend in February. Our Lapland in December guide shows how the month changes from the first week to the last.
What If You Are Already Late?
Do not give up and do not panic. Three honest steps:
- Write today. Tell us your dates and your hopes; we check availability for the proposal or the venue and say plainly what is possible.
- Be flexible by a few days. Moving by two or three days can unlock a venue or a photographer.
- Simplify. A smaller wedding or an elopement needs fewer suppliers and can be arranged faster; see Elopement in Lapland. A symbolic ceremony in Lapland with the legal paperwork done at home removes the Finnish paperwork altogether.
For a proposal, almost any date can be made to work if we are given enough notice to arrange flowers and a photographer.
What You Can Decide Now, Before You Contact Anyone
Four decisions make the first conversation quick: the season (winter, summer, shoulder), the size (two people, 20, 50 or more), the budget range, and whether you want the legal wedding in Finland. Beyond that, the first message to us can simply be the story: how you met, what you imagine, your dates. Everything else follows from the answers we give within one business day.
How to Plan It With Us
Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company. For a proposal: tell us the story, receive an option and a quote within a few days, let us prepare quietly, and enjoy the moment. For a wedding: tell us about your day, have a consultation and estimate, sign an agreement with a deposit, plan together, and on the day we install every detail and run the timeline. Start on the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page. We communicate only with you for proposals and never contact your partner. See Proposals in Lapland, Weddings and Wedding & Proposal Venues in Lapland.
