A Valentine’s Day Proposal in Rovaniemi: February Light, Deep Snow and the Best Odds of the Winter
February is the month we would choose for a proposal trip to Rovaniemi if we were choosing for ourselves: the snow is at its deepest, the daylight is back, the lakes are frozen solid and the northern lights are still in season. Through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, we plan proposals here all winter. This is how we would plan a Valentine’s week — and why we would not ask on the 14th itself.

Yes, February is one of the best months of the year to propose in Rovaniemi, and a Valentine’s trip is the perfect cover story. Come for four nights around the 14th and let us set up the moment on a quiet weekday evening, not on Valentine’s Day itself. Every one of our ten signature Proposals in Lapland is possible in February: On the Frozen Lake (from €1,400) uses the deep-winter ice and the long blue hour, Yes Under the Aurora (from €1,500) is a private northern lights hunt with a photographer-guide, and A Promise in the Ice Chapel (from €1,800) exists only from mid-December to the end of March. For a surprise waiting in your own room, Right Where You Are starts at €650. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company; every price includes planning, set-up, removal and 30 roses.

Why February Suits a Proposal Better Than December
Most people planning a winter proposal in Lapland think of Christmas first. We plan plenty of December proposals — but if the dates are flexible we gently steer couples towards February, and Valentine’s week is the perfect excuse.
The first reason is light. In December the sun barely clears the horizon in Rovaniemi and the useful daylight is a few hours of twilight. By mid-February the days are around seven to eight hours long and growing fast, with a long, soft blue hour in the late afternoon that is the most beautiful light we know for photographs on snow. You can propose in daylight, at blue hour or in full darkness under the aurora, all in the same week.
The second reason is snow. By February the snow cover around Rovaniemi is at its deepest and most reliable, the lakes have been frozen for two months and the ice is thick and safe to walk on. This is the heart of the season for On the Frozen Lake, and the private land we use for The Fireside Proposal looks exactly like the Lapland of the pictures.
The third is the sky. The northern lights are possible from late August to April, and February sits comfortably inside that window, with long dark evenings but without the deepest cold of January. It is still properly cold, −5 °C to −25 °C, but the extremes are usually behind you.
And the fourth is the crowds: the Christmas rush is over and a weekday evening on a private lake feels like Lapland is yours.
Which of Our Proposals Work on a Valentine's Trip
Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company — Alla founded the studio after planning her own wedding in 2024, and we are the ones holding the bouquet in the snow while you are still on the way. So this is not a neutral review; it is the honest advice we would give a friend. In February everything we offer is open, which is not true of any other month except March. All prices are from-prices and include organisation, coordination, set-up and removal, a bouquet of 30 roses and, in nearly every case, a professional photographer.

| Proposal | From | February light | Photographer | Why it suits Valentine’s week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| On the Frozen Lake | €1,400 | Blue hour or candle-lit evening | Included | Deep-winter ice, candles and lanterns, a fire on the shore |
| Yes Under the Aurora | €1,500 | Night | Included (your guide) | Long dark evenings, aurora still in season |
| A Promise in the Ice Chapel | €1,800 | Any time the chapel is yours | Included | Candlelight through ice walls; only until the end of March |
| The Fireside Proposal | €1,400 | Afternoon or evening | Included | A fire, warm drinks and a reindeer to feed in the winter months |
| Dinner in the Glass Dome | €1,450 | Evening | Included | A private three-course dinner for two; the obvious Valentine’s dinner |
| Right Where You Are | €650 | Any hour you choose | Add-on | A styled setting waiting in your cabin or hotel |
Two of these are winter-only: the frozen lake needs thick, safe ice, and the Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos in Sinettä is carved every winter and melts every spring.
Please Do Not Propose on the 14th Itself
This is the advice couples thank us for later. If you arrive in Rovaniemi for Valentine’s and propose on the evening of 14 February, your partner has had the whole trip to wonder whether it is coming. Restaurants are full, everyone around you is on a date, and if a cloudy sky spoils an aurora plan you have no second night in hand.
Propose two days earlier instead. Book the trip openly as a Valentine’s getaway — that is the cover story, and it is true — then let us set up the moment on the 12th or 13th, on a quiet evening that your partner thinks is simply a private northern lights tour, a dinner in a glass dome or a walk to a frozen lake to see the candles. Valentine’s Day itself then becomes your first full day engaged — a far better way to spend it.
If your dates only allow the 14th, tell us and we build in a sheltered alternative so nothing depends on one night’s weather.
Our Three Favourites for a February Yes
On the Frozen Lake — from €1,400. A wide private lake just outside Rovaniemi, snow-covered pines all around, candles and lanterns set out on the ice for the time of day you choose. In February we would choose the blue hour: deep blue and pink sky over the snow, candles coming alive as it darkens, the fire with warm drinks waiting on the shore. Private use of the lake and the shore, a bouquet of 30 roses, sparkling wine and a professional photographer who captures the moment and then takes couple photos are all included. Available from December to March, whenever the ice is thick and safe.

Yes Under the Aurora — from €1,500. The option that hides itself best, because the cover story is exactly what you have booked: a private northern lights tour for two. Your guide for the night is a professional photographer who drives you away from the city lights to wherever the sky is clearest. While you watch the lights, the guide quietly prepares flowers and candles, photographs the moment you ask, then takes photos of you together under the aurora. All transport is included. No one can promise a clear sky, which is one more reason to propose early in the trip. Our northern lights proposal guide goes through the real odds and the cloud plan.
A Promise in the Ice Chapel — from €1,800. The Ice Chapel of the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos is carved from snow and crystal-clear ice every winter, with candlelight glowing through the walls and reindeer hides warming the benches. For the proposal it is yours alone, decorated by us, and the entrance ticket to the snow hotel is included so the evening continues after the yes with a toast in an ice glass at the Ice Bar. It sits at around 0 to −5 °C, so the moment is short and intense. Bookable from mid-December until the end of March.

A Four-Night Valentine's Week in Rovaniemi, Day by Day
Four nights is ideal for a February proposal trip: enough for a weather buffer, a daytime activity and a slow morning after.
- Night 1 (arrive, e.g. 11 Feb). The airport is about ten minutes from town. Settle in, walk the river, eat well, go to bed early. Do not propose jet-lagged.
- Day 2 — the proposal. Late afternoon for On the Frozen Lake at blue hour, evening for Yes Under the Aurora or Dinner in the Glass Dome, or the slot we agree for the Ice Chapel. Proposing on night two leaves two more nights if cloud or a snowstorm forces a change.
- Day 3 — the activity your partner came for. Huskies, a reindeer farm, a snowmobile or Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle about eight kilometres north of town. If you would rather ask during one of these, we also coordinate proposals on activities with the operator.
- Day 4 — Valentine’s Day, newly engaged. A long breakfast, a sauna, a quiet dinner. To style the evening, A Thousand Petals fills your room with petals, 70 roses and hearts at the ceiling while you are out.
- Day 5 — fly home.
With only a weekend, propose on the first full evening and keep the second as the buffer. Still deciding on the trip? Read our honest take on whether Rovaniemi is worth visiting in winter.
Keeping It a Secret on a Trip That Is Obviously Romantic
The strange advantage of a Valentine’s trip is that it is allowed to be romantic. A private tour, a special dinner, a visit to a snow hotel — none of it raises an eyebrow in February. You only have to leave out one detail.
On our side the rule is simple: we communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and we never contact your partner, your friends or the venue unless you ask us to. Everything is prepared before you arrive and quietly packed down after you leave. On your side:
- Book everything in your own name and keep the thread with us on a device your partner does not borrow.
- Keep the ring in your hand luggage, in a case you can open with gloves on, and in a zipped inner pocket on the day — not in a coat pocket you will empty for the sauna.
- Let the cover story be true. “We are going on a private northern lights tour” is accurate. “There is a dinner in a glass dome” is accurate.
- Do not over-dress the evening. A sudden shirt and jacket at −15 °C gives it away; dress warmly as usual.
What to Wear and What It Really Costs in February
Clothes. You will be standing still outdoors for a while, on ice or snow, at anything from −5 °C to −25 °C. Wool base layer, warm mid layer, insulated outer layer, mittens over thin gloves (so you can handle the ring), a hat and proper insulated boots. Our Lapland winter packing guide has the full list. For the photos, snow and night sky love a cream coat, a red or mustard scarf or a bright hat; avoid all-black. The same clothes work in the Ice Chapel; the glass dome and your accommodation are warm.

The roses. Fresh petals freeze within minutes at −20 °C, so our bouquets and décor are made for Arctic conditions and still look right in the photos an hour later.
Cost. Our ten signature proposals start between €650 (Right Where You Are) and €2,700 (The Grand Romance). The most asked-for winter options — the frozen lake, the fireside, the aurora hunt and the Ice Chapel — start between €1,400 and €1,800. Every price includes planning, coordination, set-up and removal, a bouquet of 30 roses and in nearly every case a photographer; a videographer, a bigger bouquet or a grand floral design are add-ons quoted separately with nothing hidden. Transport is included where the option says so and otherwise priced by distance from Rovaniemi.
How to Plan It With Us, Step by Step
February dates book early, because Valentine’s week and the school holidays overlap for many countries. The process is the same for every option and leaves you almost nothing to do on the day.
- Weeks before — tell us the story. Write to us through the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page: how you met, what matters to your partner, how you want it to feel, your dates and where you are staying. We reply within one business day and suggest the option that fits, or shape a custom one.
- Within a few days — option and quote. One clear quote with nothing hidden, the date held, the exact location and timing fine-tuned together.
- The days before — quiet preparation. Flowers, candles, photographer, transport, sparkling wine and the weather plan all confirmed, with a sheltered alternative agreed if your option needs one.
- The hour — the moment. We set up while you are on your way and step out of sight. You walk your partner in. The yes happens. We capture it, then quietly pack down.
And when the engagement turns into plans, the same team plans Weddings and elopements across Lapland.
FAQ
Is February a good month to propose in Rovaniemi?
One of the best. The snow is at its deepest, the lakes are frozen solid, the daylight is back to seven or eight hours with a long blue hour, and the northern lights are still in season. Every one of our ten signature Proposals in Lapland is possible in February, including the winter-only On the Frozen Lake and A Promise in the Ice Chapel.
Should I propose on Valentine's Day itself?
We suggest not. Propose two days earlier on a quiet weekday evening, use the Valentine’s trip as the cover story, and spend the 14th itself as your first full day engaged. If the 14th is your only option we will plan it, with a sheltered alternative agreed in advance.
How much does a Valentine's proposal in Rovaniemi cost?
Our signature proposals start between €650 (Right Where You Are) and €2,700 (The Grand Romance); the most popular winter options start between €1,400 and €1,800. Every price includes planning, coordination, set-up, removal, a bouquet of 30 roses and in nearly every case a professional photographer.
How cold is Rovaniemi in February, and what if it snows during the proposal?
Expect anything from −5 °C to −25 °C, so dress in wool layers with insulated boots and mittens. There is no rain in a Lapland winter; falling snow makes the moment more romantic, and we bring clear umbrellas if needed. The weather never stands in the way of a beautiful proposal.
Will my partner find out?
Not from us. We communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and never contact your partner, friends or the venue unless you ask. Everything is prepared before you arrive and packed down after you leave.
How far ahead should I book a February proposal?
The earlier the better — Valentine’s week and school holidays overlap, and the Ice Chapel and the frozen lake have a short season. Write to us as soon as your flights are booked; we reply within one business day and hold the date once the quote is agreed.
Our Honest Final Word
Plainly: Rovaniemi Weddings is our company, so of course we would like you to book with us. But we also live here, and February is the month we would choose for our own proposal trip. The light is back, the snow is deep, the lake is safe to walk on, the Ice Chapel is standing, and the aurora still comes out on clear nights. A Valentine’s getaway is the most natural cover story in the calendar — just do not ask on the 14th itself.
For a quiet, candle-lit yes at blue hour, start with On the Frozen Lake. If your partner wants the northern lights above everything, Yes Under the Aurora. If the words “ice hotel” have ever come up, A Promise in the Ice Chapel. And if none of those fits, see all ten proposals and tell us the story — we reply within one business day, and we never contact your partner.
