Your Perfect 3 Days in Rovaniemi This December: Which Tours to Book Together, and in Which Order (2026)
A day-by-day December plan for first-time adults: aurora on night one, huskies and reindeer by day, a back-up aurora night, and exactly what it costs to book it all together.

Every December our phones fill up with the same message from friends abroad: "We have three days in Rovaniemi, what do we actually book?" Three days sounds like plenty until you realise how short the light is, how far apart the husky farms and aurora spots are, and how quickly the good December slots disappear. Booking tours one by one, in whatever order you find them, is how people end up with two five-hour tours on the same day and no back-up night for the Northern Lights.
So this is the plan we send them now. Joona grew up with Lapland winters and has worked in tourism here for years; Alla came from Ukraine and plans everything like the AI engineer she is, with a spreadsheet and a fallback. Between us, this is the order that works for first-time adults in December 2026, built only from StayLapland tours you can book in one sitting.
For three days in Rovaniemi in December, book an aurora hunting tour on your first night (the Guaranteed Northern Lights Hunting Tour by Bus5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, from €109), the Nulkki Husky Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on day two (from €189, 4 hours, 5 km driving your own team), a Kuoksa Reindeer & Snowmobile Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on day three (from €249) and a cosy back-up aurora evening on the Northern Lights Tour Sleigh Ride5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €109). That is from €656 per adult for four tours, and our 5% reader discount works on every one of them.

How we built this December plan
A good three-day Rovaniemi itinerary in December follows three simple rules, and almost every disappointed traveller we meet broke at least one of them.
Rule one: the aurora goes early. The Northern Lights depend on clouds as much as on solar activity, and December can bring several grey nights in a row. If your only aurora tour is on your last evening, one bad forecast ends the hunt. Book it for night one and you have two more evenings to try again.
Rule two: one big daytime tour per day. December daylight is short, a few hours of soft blue light around midday. Husky and reindeer farms sit outside the city, and most tours include pick-up and drop-off within 10 km of the centre, so each half-day tour really is half a day. Two five-hour tours back to back is how people end up exhausted and grumpy by day three.
Rule three: put the "wow" animal first. For most first-timers that is the huskies. Driving your own team on the Nulkki Husky Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the moment people talk about at home, so we give it the best slot: day two, when you are rested and not yet rushing for a flight.
With those rules, the plan looks like this: aurora hunting on night one, huskies on day two with a relaxed aurora evening, then reindeer and a snowmobile on day three with free time at Santa Claus Village. If you are still deciding how long to stay, our general 3-day winter itinerary covers the non-tour side of the city too.
Day 1: arrive, rest, chase the aurora
Day 1 afternoon: land, check in, eat early
Whatever time you land, in December it will already feel like evening by mid-afternoon. Do not book a daytime tour on arrival day. Flights are delayed by snow often enough that a tight connection to a husky farm is a gamble you do not need. Check in, walk to the river to see the city lights, and eat a proper meal early. Aurora tours start in the evening and you want to be warm and fed before you go.
Day 1 evening: the hunting tour
Our first-night pick is the Guaranteed Northern Lights Hunting Tour by Bus5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, from €109 per adult, about 5 hours. Unlike a fixed campfire site, the guides choose the direction each night based on the weather, driving towards the clearest sky they can find. Professional photos are included, and if no aurora photos are captured, you get a 100% refund. On a first night, when you have no idea yet how the local weather behaves, that combination of mobility and a refund is exactly what you want.
Book this if you want the best realistic chance on your first evening. Skip it if a 5-hour night after a travel day sounds like too much; in that case move it to night two and use night one for an early night.
A quick tip from us: auroras often look stronger on camera than to the naked eye, especially when they are faint. Do not be disappointed if the first glow looks greyish-green; let the guide's camera show you what is there.
Day 2: huskies by day, sleigh ride by night
Day 2 morning: Nulkki Husky Adventure
This is the anchor of the whole trip. The Nulkki Husky Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €189 per adult, about 4 hours) takes you to Kuoksajärvi forest, where you learn how to mush and then drive your own team for 5 km. Afterwards there are cookies and warm juice in a teepee, and time with the dogs. Overalls, boots and gloves are included, and pick-up is included within 10 km of the city centre.
A December detail many people miss: between 1 December and 10 January, drop-off on this tour is only included to selected locations, namely Postmaster Hotel, Rovaniemi city centre, the Ollerovaara area and Santa Claus Village. If you are staying further out, plan your ride home from one of those points.
Book this if you want the classic Lapland moment and are happy to steer a sled. Skip it if anyone in your group is nervous about driving; a gentler option is in section 7. The tour can be cancelled or rescheduled in extreme cold (the limit is −35°C) or if fewer than 4 people are booked, so keep your phone on.
Day 2 afternoon: do nothing
We mean it. Go back, warm up, nap. This is the gap that makes day two enjoyable instead of a march.
Day 2 evening: Northern Lights Tour Sleigh Ride
Your back-up aurora evening is the Northern Lights Tour Sleigh Ride5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €109, about 4 hours). A snowmobile pulls you on a sleigh into a quiet forest spot, where you wait by the fire in a teepee with snacks and hot drinks. It is a fixed location, so it cannot chase clear skies like the hunting tour, but it is a lovely evening even if the sky stays shy. If you already saw a strong aurora on night one, this becomes the relaxed, cosy night of the trip.
Day 3: reindeer, snowmobile and Santa
Day 3 morning: Kuoksa Reindeer & Snowmobile Adventure
On the last full day we combine two experiences in one trip out of town with the Kuoksa Reindeer & Snowmobile Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €249, about 5 hours). You get a 2–3 km reindeer sleigh ride through the forest and about one hour of snowmobile driving, with warm clothing and pick-up included. Driving a snowmobile needs a driver's licence, and you must be 18 or older to drive; passengers do not need one.
Why a combo here? Because it saves a second transfer, which matters on a short trip. Price-wise it is honest value rather than a big saving: booked separately, the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €159) and the Arctic Snowmobile Tour on Private Trails5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €99) come to €258, so the combo is a little cheaper and needs only one pick-up.
Day 3 afternoon: Santa Claus Village on your own
The village is easy to reach from the city and adults enjoy it more than they expect: the Arctic Circle line, the post office, the lights. In December it is busy, so go in the late afternoon after your tour. If you would rather have a guide, lunch and the Santa meeting organised for you, swap this for the Santa Claus Village Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €169, about 5 hours), but then drop the reindeer and snowmobile combo; two 5-hour tours on one day is exactly what rule two warns against.
Day 3 evening: optional sauna, or a last look at the sky
If you have energy and budget left, the Private Wooden Heated Sauna and Ice Swimming5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the most Finnish way to end a trip: wood-heated sauna, a hand-cut ice hole, towels, snacks and winter clothing included. It is a private booking, so the per-person price (from €199) assumes at least two people. Otherwise step outside after dinner. If the forecast is good, you might get a last show over the city's darker edges.
If you only book 2, 3 or 4 activities
Not everyone wants four tours in three days, and that is fine. Here is how we would cut it down.
- Only 2 activities: the aurora hunting bus tour and the Nulkki Husky Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. Huskies by day, aurora by night, nothing else needed. From €298 per adult.
- Only 3 activities: add the reindeer and snowmobile combo on day three. You get every classic Lapland animal and machine. From €547 per adult.
- All 4: add the sleigh ride as a second aurora evening. This is the version that best protects you against a cloudy night. From €656 per adult.
On a tighter budget, replace the sleigh ride with the Northern Lights Tour At The Campfire5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €99, about 3 hours), and replace the combo with the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 alone (from €159). That brings the four-tour plan down to €556 per adult.
For more speed and less fluff, swap the combo for the Wilderness Snowmobile Safari5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199, about 5 hours, 2 to 2.5 hours of driving and a lunch by the open fire). It is the better choice for couples who care more about driving than about reindeer.
Book your whole plan in one go
Here is what the full four-tour plan costs per adult, using the lowest "from" prices in the booking calendar. The live price depends on the date and ticket type, so treat this as the starting point.
| When | Activity | Duration | Price per adult |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night 1 | Guaranteed Northern Lights Hunting Tour by Bus | about 5 h | from €109 |
| Day 2 morning | Nulkki Husky Adventure | about 4 h | from €189 |
| Night 2 | Northern Lights Tour Sleigh Ride | about 4 h | from €109 |
| Day 3 morning | Kuoksa Reindeer & Snowmobile Adventure | about 5 h | from €249 |
| Total for the plan | from €656 | ||
| Optional | Private Wooden Heated Sauna and Ice Swimming | about 4 h | from €199 |
The 5% reader discount applies to every booking, so on the four-tour plan it saves you around €33 per adult. Book the tours in the order of the trip, starting with the husky tour: it is the one we would lock in first, because it anchors the whole plan. Remember: type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off — on every activity you book.
Each button opens the live calendar right here on the page. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in every checkout, not just the first. Most tours above have free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, so booking early in December is low-risk.
Upgrades and swaps worth considering
A smaller aurora group. If the Northern Lights are the main reason for your trip, upgrade night one to the Small Group Northern Lights Hunting Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199). Groups are 2 to 8 people, the night usually runs 4 to 10 hours depending on conditions, photos are included, and there is the same 100% refund if no aurora photos are captured. Start times vary between 17:00 and 21:00 and are confirmed by email on the day.
A husky ride with reindeer. If someone in your group would like more than one animal on the day, the Kuoksa Husky & Reindeer Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 combines a 5 km self-driven husky ride with a 2–3 km reindeer sleigh ride and open-fire salmon soup in a teepee. It is a 5-hour tour from €349 with winter clothing and pick-up within 10 km of Rovaniemi centre included, so it is the pricier choice, best kept for a day with nothing else planned.
Everything in one day. If you want huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles on the same day, the Lapland Bucketlist Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €449, about 6 hours, lunch and photographer included) covers all three. It replaces both day two and day three morning tours, which frees a full day for Santa Claus Village or simply sleeping in. It is not cheaper than the separate tours, but it is simpler.

Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for Rovaniemi in December?
Yes, if you plan it. Three days gives you one husky tour, one reindeer and snowmobile day, two evenings to look for the Northern Lights and a few free hours at Santa Claus Village. It is not enough for a slow, rest-heavy trip, so book tours in advance and keep the order simple.
Which night should we book the aurora tour?
Book your main aurora hunting tour on the first or second night. If the sky is cloudy, you still have one or two evenings left to try again, which you lose completely if you leave the aurora to your last night.
Can we do the husky tour and an aurora tour on the same day?
Yes. The Nulkki Husky Adventure takes about 4 hours, so a morning husky tour and an evening aurora tour fit comfortably in one day. We would not add a third tour on top of that.
Do we need our own winter clothing?
Most of the tours in this plan include thermal overalls, boots and gloves. You still need warm base layers, a hat and wool socks underneath. Always check the "included" list in the booking window for each tour.
Are December tours sold out early?
The weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest of the season, so popular times fill up first. Most tours here have free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs you little flexibility.
How does the 5% discount work?
Type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout in the booking window. It gives 5% off, and you can use it on every activity you book, not just the first one.
Our final pick for 3 December days
If you only remember one thing: aurora early, huskies on day two, one big tour per day. Book the hunting tour for your first night, the Nulkki Husky Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for your second morning, the sleigh ride as your back-up aurora evening, and the reindeer and snowmobile combo before you fly home. That is four very different Lapland experiences, two chances at the Northern Lights and enough rest that you will actually enjoy day three.
Book them together now while December dates are still open, and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off each one.
