Proposing on 6 December in Rovaniemi: Finland’s Independence Day, Two Candles in the Window and a Quiet Yes
6 December is Finland’s Independence Day, and in Rovaniemi it is one of the quietest, most candle-lit evenings of the year, a gift for a proposal. We are Joona & Alla, and we plan proposals through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings. Here is what the day is like, which settings work in early December, and how to keep it secret.

Yes, 6 December is a lovely day to propose in Rovaniemi. It is Finland’s Independence Day: shops and offices are closed, the town is calm, and the Finnish custom is to put two blue-and-white candles in the window as darkness falls, so the whole evening already glows. Early December is also before the Christmas crowds. The settings that work best are Yes Under the Aurora (from €1,500), The Fireside Proposal (from €1,400), Dinner in the Glass Dome (from €1,450) and The Path to Yes (from €1,500). The Ice Chapel opens in mid-December, so it is not an option yet. Through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, we plan, style and photograph the moment. Book as soon as you have your flights, because the first week of December fills early. See all Proposals in Lapland.

What 6 December Is Like in Rovaniemi
Independence Day on 6 December is a national holiday, and it is a quiet one. Most shops, offices and many services are closed, and Finns spend it at home. There are some formal events and a television reception that half the country watches in the evening, but nothing that crowds the town. For a traveller that means calm streets, a slower pace and a city that feels like it belongs to the people who live in it.
The tradition that matters for a proposal is the candles. On the evening of 6 December, Finns light two candles in the window, usually blue and white. Walk through Rovaniemi at dusk and you see small flames in almost every window. You do not need to explain this to your partner or make anything of it. It simply makes the day feel like a gentle occasion, and a proposal that follows it, dinner, a walk, a fire, sits naturally inside that mood.
One practical note: with the day closed, plan your arrival and transfers early. Restaurants, rentals and some transport run on holiday timetables, and the proposal itself is the one part of the day we can arrange to the minute.
Light, Cold and What to Expect in Early December
By early December Rovaniemi is in the polar-night season. Daylight is brief and soft, mostly a long blue-and-pink twilight rather than a bright day, which is excellent for photographs and candles. Temperatures are usually between about −5 and −15 °C, and there is typically snow on the ground, though we never promise a particular depth. Our guide to the polar night and proposals goes through the light month by month.

What that means for the plan: the afternoon blue hour (lovely, and warmer than the late evening) is the time to choose if you would rather be outside for 30 minutes than three hours. After dark, the forest is lit by candles and fire, and on a clear night the northern lights are possible. The aurora season runs from late August to April, but nobody can promise a display on a given night, which is why we always build a plan that works without them.
Four Settings That Work on 6 December
Not every proposal is available this early in the season, so here is our honest shortlist.

- Yes Under the Aurora, from €1,500. A private northern lights tour for two. Your guide is also a professional photographer, who knows where the sky is clearest, prepares flowers and candles while you watch the sky, and captures the moment you ask. All transport is included. If the lights do not show, you still have a private night in the forest with a fire and a proposal setting.
- The Fireside Proposal, from €1,400. Our private land outside Rovaniemi, with the laavu, a crackling fire, warm drinks and cookies, 30 roses and sparkling wine. In winter there is a reindeer to feed. This is the most forgiving option for a cold evening.
- Dinner in the Glass Dome, from €1,450. A private three-course dinner at Invisible Forest Lodge, with the décor waiting outside among the trees or at your table. Within 10 km of the town centre, transport included.
- The Path to Yes, from €1,500. A walk in Riisitunturi National Park or the Korouma canyon with your “guide”, really the photographer, and a campfire snack afterwards. Crown snow can be spectacular in early winter.
Two settings to leave for later: A Promise in the Ice Chapel only opens in mid-December, and On the Frozen Lake depends on the ice being thick and safe, usually December to March. We will tell you straight if the ice is not ready.
A Simple Evening Plan Around the Candles
This is how a 6 December can run for a couple arriving that morning or the day before. It is a template, and we adjust it to your flights and the weather.
| Time | What happens | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Late morning | Arrive, check in, quiet walk in town or by the river | The town is closed, so keep it slow |
| 14:00–15:00 | Warm lunch or a rest | You will be outside later |
| About 15:00 | Transfer to the setting (we arrange it) | Blue hour is soft and photographs beautifully |
| 16:00 onwards | The proposal, a toast, couple photographs | Candles and fire at their best in the dark |
| Evening | Dinner, then the two candles in your window | The Independence Day tradition becomes yours |
Because the proposal is built around one setting and one hour, the rest of the day can be as calm as you like. Our guide to the best time of day explains why mid-afternoon often wins.

From €1,500 · aurora season (late Aug–Apr). Everything you share stays between us — we never contact your partner.
Keeping It Secret on a Holiday
The hardest part of a 6 December proposal is that so many people are at home, and your partner may ask why you are not doing the tourist things. Our approach is the same as for any trip: give them a reason to be somewhere at a given time, and let the plan hide inside it. The reason is usually a “private evening tour”, a “dinner I booked”, or a “photo session I want of us”. If you choose The Path to Yes or Yes Under the Aurora, the photographer arrives as your guide, so nothing looks unusual.

We message only you, never your partner. We keep one point of contact, and everything is confirmed by you in advance. If you want a longer read, our guide to keeping a Lapland proposal secret has the full checklist.
What to Wear in Early December
Dress for the setting, not the photograph, and then choose the photograph’s outfit on top. Thermal base layers, a proper winter coat or overalls, insulated boots and a hat are the foundation. Bring a nicer layer for the moment itself: a good coat, a scarf in a colour that shows against snow, and warm gloves that you can slip off for the ring. Keep the ring in an inner pocket close to your body, because the cold makes it hard to handle with numb fingers. Our winter wedding and photo clothing guide works for a proposal too.
Remember that the cold also affects the flowers. We work with high-quality artificial and preserved flowers because fresh petals freeze at low temperatures, and our bouquet of 30 roses is made to look perfect in Arctic conditions.
What It Costs and What Is Included
For the four settings above, the from-prices are €1,400 to €1,500, and each already includes the planning and coordination, the set-up and removal, a bouquet of 30 roses and, in these four, a professional photographer who captures the moment and takes couple photographs right after the yes. Yes Under the Aurora and The Path to Yes include all transport; Dinner in the Glass Dome includes transport within 10 km of the centre. Add-ons include a videographer, a bigger bouquet or grander décor, and private transport beyond what is included.
If your budget is lower, Right Where You Are (from €650) brings a styled setting to the cabin or hotel you have already booked, and a photographer can be added. It does need the property’s agreement, which we arrange with them.
How to Plan It With Us
Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, so here is the process exactly as we run it. First, tell us the story: how you met, what they love, how you want it to feel. Second, we send an option and a clear quote within a few days, and hold your date. Third, quiet preparation: flowers, candles, photographer, transport and the weather plan are all confirmed before you arrive. Fourth, the moment: we set up while you are on your way, step out of sight, and you walk them in. We reply within one business day. Start with Contact Rovaniemi Weddings and tell us the date.
For a 6 December date, we suggest writing at least three to four weeks ahead if you can. Last-minute is sometimes possible, and we will say so honestly.
FAQ
Is 6 December a good day to propose in Rovaniemi?
Yes. It is a quiet national holiday, the town is calm, and the evening tradition of two candles in the window gives the day a warm, gentle mood. It is also before the main Christmas crowds.
Will the northern lights be visible?
They are possible. The aurora season runs from late August to April, but nobody can promise a display on a given night. That is why every plan we build works without them. Yes Under the Aurora is the setting designed around them.
Can we do the Ice Chapel proposal on 6 December?
Not yet. A Promise in the Ice Chapel runs from mid-December to March, when the chapel is carved and open. For 6 December we suggest the fire, the dome dinner, the aurora tour or the walk.
How much does it cost?
From €1,400 to €1,500 for the four settings above, including planning, set-up, 30 roses and a photographer. Right Where You Are starts at €650 with a photographer as an add-on.
Are things open on Independence Day?
Many shops and services are closed or on holiday hours. Our team works the day, and we arrange the proposal to the minute. Do plan lunch, rental and transfers in advance.
How far ahead should we book?
Three to four weeks is comfortable, and more is better for the first week of December. We reply within one business day and can sometimes help at shorter notice.
Our Honest Final Word
A proposal on 6 December is one of the best-kept ideas in Rovaniemi: the town is quiet, the blue hour is soft, and the candles in every window make the evening feel arranged for you. It is not the warmest or the brightest day, so choose a setting with a fire and a photographer you do not have to think about, and keep your plan simple.
We are the people who would set up the moment, and yes, it is our own business. We would rather you asked us questions than booked something that does not fit. When you are ready, tell us your date through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings, and choose between Yes Under the Aurora, The Fireside Proposal, Dinner in the Glass Dome or The Path to Yes.
