A Christmas Wedding in Rovaniemi: Dates, Venues, Cost and What the Day Actually Looks Like

Getting married in Rovaniemi at Christmas means a ceremony in blue twilight, snow that has been on the ground since November, candlelight everywhere and the northern lights possible above the reception. Through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, we plan and style weddings here all winter. This is the honest guide: which December dates to choose, where the ceremony can happen, what it costs and how a wedding fits into a Christmas trip for you and your guests.

Short answer

A Christmas Wedding in Lapland is entirely possible for foreign couples, and Rovaniemi is the easiest place to hold one: the airport is ten minutes from town, snow is reliable from November and the season runs from late November to early January. Our honest advice is to marry between 1 and 15 December — the atmosphere is identical, the town calmer and venues easier to secure — unless Christmas week itself is the point. Ceremonies happen in the Ice Chapel of the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos (from 15 December), in a glass igloo, on the pier or in the restaurant at Silver Birch Resort, or in a hilltop cabin at Aurora Hill Resort. Budget from around €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €10,000–€20,000 for 20–50 guests; start the paperwork three to four months ahead and book the venue eight to twelve months out. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and we reply within one business day through the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page.

What Christmas in Rovaniemi Really Looks Like

December in Rovaniemi is the polar night, or kaamos: the sun sits just below or barely above the horizon, and the middle of the day is a long blue twilight that turns pink and violet over the snow before the lights of the town take over. It is not dark in the way people fear; it is a few hours of the year’s most beautiful light, then candlelight. Snow is typically on the ground from November and stays. Temperatures sit between −5 °C and −15 °C most days, colder in a clear spell.

For a wedding this changes the shape of the day completely. The ceremony is planned around that midday twilight — an outdoor ceremony at 13:00 is in soft blue light, by 15:00 it is dusk — and the evening is long, dark and made for candles, fires and, on clear nights, the northern lights. December is prime aurora season, though no one can promise a clear sky.

The town is busy in December: Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle eight kilometres north, direct winter flights arrive from Helsinki, London, Paris and other European cities, and Christmas week is the busiest of the year. That is why we start with the calendar.

Which December Dates to Choose — and Why We Suggest 1–15 December

Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company — Alla founded the studio after planning her own wedding in 2024, and we are the team installing the candles while you are getting ready. So this is advice, not a review, and our first piece of it concerns the date.

The Christmas wedding season runs from late November to early January. Within it, the first half of December is the quiet secret: the snow, the polar-night light and the decorations are all there, but the town is less crowded, venues and accommodation are easier to secure and generally more affordable, and your guests are not competing with the Christmas rush for flights. The week of Christmas and New Year is the most atmospheric and by far the busiest; it is wonderful, and we plan it, but it needs the earliest booking of all.

Where the Ceremony Can Happen

Rovaniemi has a handful of venues we know intimately, all within about half an hour of the airport.

The Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos, Sinettä. Finland’s only full-size snow and ice hotel, built by hand on the shore of Lake Lehtojärvi every winter. The chapel — ice altar, candlelight glowing through the walls, reindeer hides on the benches — seats around 30–50 guests and hosts ceremonies from 15 December to 31 March, so it is only possible for weddings in the second half of December. It stays at around 0 to −5 °C, so the ceremony is short and everyone dresses warmly; afterwards there is dinner by the open fire in the kota, a toast in an ice glass at the Ice Bar and glass igloos for the night.

Silver Birch Resort, Lake Jyrhämäjärvi. A private peninsula about twenty minutes from the airport with five glass-fronted cabins and a lakeside restaurant seating up to 36. Vows on the resort’s own pier in the snow or inside the restaurant, which becomes your private dining room. Venue hire runs from €799 until midnight, with a four-course dinner from €60 per guest.

Aurora Hill Resort, Ollerovaara. Handcrafted glass-fronted cabins on Rovaniemi’s highest hill, ten minutes from the centre, with Restaurant Roavvi seating up to 60 and private use possible. Ceremonies on the hillside with the northern sky behind you, indoors before dinner, or inside your suite; the photo at the top of this post is a Christmas setting we styled here.

Arcticmint Villa, Lake Norvajärvi. A family-owned lakeside villa fifteen minutes from the airport, yours alone for a wedding of around fifteen guests, with the ceremony in the villa’s own yard and dinner brought in. The north-facing shore is one of the best places we know to watch the aurora.

Invisible Forest Lodge. Mirror-clad suites in a pine forest ten minutes from town, with glass dinner domes for two to six — made for an elopement dinner after vows in the forest. Our Wedding & Proposal Venues in Lapland page compares them all.

What the Wedding Day Looks Like in December

The daylight decides the timeline, so a December wedding day in Rovaniemi runs earlier than one at home.

  • Morning (9:00–11:00). Getting ready in blue half-light while we install the ceremony and dinner styling. At the snow hotel the Sky Bar doubles as a getting-ready room.
  • Midday twilight (12:00–14:00). The ceremony. Outdoors, we keep it to fifteen or twenty minutes with fire pits, blankets and heated drinks right there and a warm space steps away; in the Ice Chapel it is about twenty to thirty minutes with reindeer hides on the benches. Couple photos follow immediately while the sky is still pink and blue.
  • Afternoon (14:00–17:00). Dusk by three. A reindeer sleigh arrival fits here, then everyone moves indoors to candlelight, a sauna or a drink by the fire.
  • Evening. Dinner — a long table by a lake, a kota around an open fire, a hilltop restaurant — and on clear nights someone will come in and say the lights are out.

Styling for Christmas naturally leans into the season: deep red roses, white amaryllis, pine, spruce, eucalyptus and juniper, with candlelight everywhere, faux fur on the ceremony chairs and warm metallics on the tables. We use high-quality artificial and preserved flowers because fresh petals freeze within minutes outdoors in December — and the bouquet is still perfect at midnight.

The Legal Side for Foreign Couples

Finland allows foreign nationals to marry here; both partners can be foreign, and there is no residency requirement or waiting period. The process is the same at Christmas as in any other month, but the holidays slow everything down, so start early.

  • Examination of impediments to marriage. Applied for through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (Digi- ja väestötietovirasto). It typically takes about seven working days but can take several weeks for international couples, and the fee is around €60. Begin three to four months before the wedding so nothing depends on an office being open in Christmas week.
  • Documents. A valid passport for each partner, a certificate of no impediment from your home country, sometimes a birth certificate, and a divorce decree or death certificate of a former spouse if either of you has been married. Everything officially translated into Finnish, Swedish or English by a certified translator; some countries also require an apostille.
  • The ceremony. A civil ceremony is performed by a district court judge or another authorised official, can be held at virtually any location — the Ice Chapel, a lakeside pier, a glass igloo — and can be conducted in English. Religious ceremonies are possible through registered communities in Finland.
  • Afterwards. The officiant registers the marriage within days; Finnish certificates are internationally recognised, though some countries ask for legalisation.

Many of our couples complete the legal formalities at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Lapland, which removes every deadline from the equation. Our Getting Married in Finland page has the full checklist.

What a Christmas Wedding in Rovaniemi Costs

December is peak season, so budgets sit towards the upper end of the Lapland ranges; keep a contingency of around 10%. We do not publish a from-price for wedding planning — the quote follows a consultation, with no hidden fees — but the ranges on our Lapland Wedding Cost page are a sound start:

  • Overall: from around €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €30,000 or more for a larger celebration; €10,000–€20,000 for a beautifully styled wedding of 20–50 guests.
  • Venue: €500–€1,500 for a cabin or glass igloo for an intimate day; €2,000–€8,000 for a hotel or resort event space.
  • Styling: a full styling package €1,500–€5,000; elopement styling from around €800.
  • Photography: €1,500–€4,000 for full-day coverage; videography adds €1,500–€3,500.
  • Catering: a sit-down dinner for 20–50 guests around €50–€150 per person.
  • Reindeer: a sleigh ride for two with a short reindeer encounter from around €400.
  • Legal fee: the examination of impediments, around €60.

Guests’ flights and rooms are their own: return flights from most European cities roughly €150–€500, guesthouses €80–€150 a night, glass igloos and resort suites €300–€800 — all higher in Christmas week. Our Lapland Wedding Packages page explains how packages are built.

Fitting a Wedding Into a Christmas Trip for You and Your Guests

A Christmas wedding in Rovaniemi is also a Christmas holiday for everyone who comes, and the best ones are planned as a three- or four-night weekend rather than a single day.

  1. Day 1 — arrivals. Guests fly in, settle, and meet for an informal dinner. Our Lapland Christmas season guide covers what to book first for December.
  2. Day 2 — the wedding. Ceremony in the midday twilight, photos, dinner, candlelight, aurora if you are lucky.
  3. Day 3 — Lapland for everyone. Huskies, reindeer, Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle, a sauna by a lake.
  4. Day 4 — a slow breakfast and departures, or an extra night in a glass igloo for the two of you. Our Honeymoon in Lapland page shows how we style the days after.

Tell your guests what to wear. Under the dress or suit: a wool base layer. Over it, for every outdoor minute: an insulated coat, hat, mittens and proper winter boots — our Lapland winter packing guide is the list we send to every guest. There is no rain in a Lapland December; falling snow during the ceremony is a gift.

How to Plan It With Us, Step by Step

We plan weddings from two to over two hundred guests, as a full service or only the part you need. For Christmas only the calendar is tighter.

  1. Tell us about your day. Share your date or window, guest count, wishes and ideas through the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page. We reply within one business day.
  2. Consultation and estimate. A meeting in person or online to talk through venues and ideas; a price estimate follows during the call or shortly after.
  3. Agreement and deposit. A simple agreement and a deposit that secures your December date.
  4. Planning together. We finalise the plan, source and book the suppliers — and present you with options; you choose, we handle every booking and email.
  5. Your wedding day. We install every detail, run the timeline and quietly solve the small things while you are getting married.

If you would rather keep it to the two of you, our Elopement in Lapland page describes how we scout and style a ceremony for two, and our Winter Wedding in Lapland page covers the whole season from November to April.

FAQ

Can foreigners get married in Rovaniemi at Christmas?

Yes. Finland allows foreign nationals to marry with no residency requirement or waiting period. You apply for an examination of impediments through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (about seven working days, sometimes several weeks for international couples, fee around €60) and a district court judge can conduct a civil ceremony in English at virtually any location. Start the paperwork three to four months ahead because of the holidays.

What is the best date for a Christmas wedding in Rovaniemi?

Between 1 and 15 December if you can: the snow, light and decorations are all there, but the town is calmer and venues and flights are easier. Christmas and New Year week is the most atmospheric and the busiest, and needs the earliest booking. The Ice Chapel is only open from 15 December.

How much does a Christmas wedding in Lapland cost?

From around €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €30,000 or more; €10,000–€20,000 covers a beautifully styled wedding of 20–50 guests. December is peak season, so budget towards the upper end and keep a contingency of around 10%. Quotes follow a consultation, with no hidden fees.

How cold is it, and can the ceremony be outdoors?

December days sit between −5 °C and −15 °C. Outdoor ceremonies are possible and beautiful in the midday twilight; we keep them to fifteen or twenty minutes with fire pits, blankets and heated drinks on hand and a warm space nearby. The Ice Chapel is around 0 to −5 °C inside.

Will we see the northern lights at our wedding?

December is prime aurora season and the lights are possible on clear, dark nights, but no one can promise them. We plan the evening so that if they appear, everyone can step outside — and so that the day is complete without them.

How far ahead should we book?

Eight to twelve months for December, twelve ideally — it is peak season for tourism and weddings. Elopements can sometimes be arranged on shorter timelines; write to us and we reply within one business day.

Our Honest Final Word

Plainly: Rovaniemi Weddings is our company, so of course we would like to plan your wedding. But we also live here through every December, and the advice we would give a friend is this: the Christmas you are imagining — the snow, the blue light, the candles, the reindeer — is there from the first of the month. Marry in early December, bring your people for a long weekend, keep the ceremony short and the dinner long, and let the northern lights be a bonus rather than the plan.

Start with our Christmas Wedding in Lapland page, look at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos, Silver Birch Resort and Aurora Hill Resort to feel which setting is yours, and then tell us about your day through the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page. We reply within one business day, and from the first idea to the last candle it is one team.
