A Wedding or Proposal at Aurora Hill Resort: Rovaniemi’s Highest Hill, Glass-Roofed Suites and a New Restaurant

Ten minutes from the centre of Rovaniemi, on the city’s highest hill, Aurora Hill Resort has glass-fronted cabins, suites with glass roofs and a new restaurant opening at the end of October 2026. We plan weddings and proposals here through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, and this guide covers what the place offers, how a proposal or a wedding of up to 60 guests works, and where the honest limits are.

Short answer

Aurora Hill Resort is a hilltop resort of handcrafted wood, stone and glass cabins in Ollerovaara, about 10 km (ten minutes) from Rovaniemi city centre. It works for a proposal in your own suite, an intimate wedding or elopement, a vow renewal, or a wedding of up to 60 guests in the new Restaurant Roavvi, which is opening at the end of October 2026. The aurora season runs from late August to April, which is when most couples come. For a proposal, Right Where You Are (from €650) and A Thousand Petals (from €700) style your suite while you are out, and both need the property’s agreement. We do not quote resort prices here: availability and rates are confirmed with the resort and restaurant directly. Planning is through our own studio; see Weddings or Contact Rovaniemi Weddings and we reply within one business day.

Why Couples Look at Aurora Hill Resort

Most people who search for a wedding or proposal venue in Rovaniemi want the same few things: the northern sky close at hand, somewhere warm to retreat to, and a place that is easy to reach after a long flight. Aurora Hill Resort covers all three. It stands on Rovaniemi’s highest hill, in Ollerovaara, about ten minutes by car from the city centre, with cabins built by hand from wood, stone and glass, and beds turned towards the sky.

Full disclosure: Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company. We are Joona and Alla, and Alla founded the studio after planning her own wedding in 2024. We have styled rose petals across the bed, a Marry Me in candlelight and full suite stylings at the resort, so we write about it from experience, not from a brochure. We will also tell you where the limits are.

The venue is listed on our own venue page as well, but a travel guide should answer the questions a visitor really asks: when to come, how it fits a Rovaniemi trip, and how to keep a proposal secret.

The Place: Cabins, Suites and the Hill

The resort is a small collection of glass-fronted cabins rather than one large hotel. That matters for both a proposal and a wedding, because privacy is built in: you walk from your door to your terrace, not through a lobby.

Every cabin has its own bathroom and kitchenette, and breakfast is included. The reception desk is open daily from 7:00 until 1:30 at night, which suits late flights and late dinners. Guests also get the free Northern Lights Alert app, and the resort offers premium winter clothing rental and taxi and car rental, all useful when you have arrived from a warm country with a suitcase of the wrong coat.

Roavvi: The New Restaurant

At the heart of the resort is Restaurant Roavvi, a new northern restaurant opening at the end of October 2026. It seats up to 60 guests, and private use of the whole restaurant is possible. The kitchen’s focus is seasonal northern cooking, built around reindeer, northern fish, rye and barley.

We want to be careful here. The restaurant is new, and at the time of writing it has barely opened its doors, so we cannot give you a review of the menu or an account of how a wedding dinner runs in the room. What we can say is what the space makes possible: a ceremony before dinner in the restaurant, a seated meal for up to 60, or, if you are two people, a styled table for two inside your suite instead.

Menus and prices for a wedding dinner should be confirmed with the restaurant. We do not quote them, because we would rather you hear the correct figure from the people who will cook the food.

Proposing at Aurora Hill Resort

For a visitor, the simplest proposal at the resort is the one that happens in your own suite. You book the stay, and we do everything else while you are out for dinner or a walk. Two of our signature proposals suit it:

  • Right Where You Are, from €650. A styled proposal setting inside or outside your cabin, villa or hotel. It includes planning and coordination, décor at your accommodation, set-up within 30 km of Rovaniemi, a bouquet of 30 roses and sparkling wine.
  • A Thousand Petals, from €700. Rose petals in the room, a bouquet of 70 roses waiting on the bed, fifteen heart-shaped balloons and sparkling wine. Your partner opens the door and the room has changed.

One honest condition: staging a proposal inside someone else’s property needs the property’s agreement. We arrange that conversation, so you do not have to explain the plan at reception and give the surprise away, but we cannot promise a date until it is confirmed.

If you want a photographer for the moment, ask us. Nearly all of our proposals include one, and it can be added to any other. For the full range, see our Proposals in Lapland page.

Getting Married Here: Weddings, Elopements and Vow Renewals

The resort lists weddings of up to 60 guests, intimate weddings and elopements, vow renewals, anniversaries and styled wedding-night suites among the things it suits. There are three natural places for a ceremony:

  • Outdoors on the hillside, with the valley and the northern sky behind you.
  • Indoors in Restaurant Roavvi, before dinner, which is the practical choice in deep winter.
  • Inside your suite, for an intimate ceremony or a vow renewal with only a handful of people.

Legally, a civil ceremony in Finland is performed by a district court judge or another authorised official, in English if you wish, and foreign couples can marry without a residency requirement. You apply for an examination of impediments through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, which usually takes about seven working days at a fee of around €60. Start gathering your documents three to four months ahead. Many couples instead sign at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the hill, which removes the paperwork entirely. Our guide to Getting Married in Finland has the full list.

When to Come and How It Fits Your Trip

The resort describes aurora season, late August to April, as the heart of its year. That is also when the hill earns its name: dark skies a few minutes from town. We would not pin a wedding or proposal to a specific aurora night, because nobody can promise one, but over several evenings the chance is good, and the alert app helps.

For a proposal, a three- or four-night stay works well. Arrive on day one, spend day two on the activity you came for (husky, reindeer or Santa Claus Village), and keep the proposal for day two or three evening, so a cancelled flight or a cloudy night still leaves you a spare evening. If you come in December, read our Lapland Christmas season guide first, because that is the busiest month and the earliest to fill.

Aurora Hill also takes visitors from the airport easily: Rovaniemi Airport is about ten minutes from town, and the resort offers taxi and car rental if you do not want to arrange transfers yourself.

Keeping It Secret and What to Wear

Secrecy is mostly about channels. We communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and we never contact your partner, friends or the venue unless you ask. Everything is prepared while you are out and packed down afterwards. A simple trick: book the dinner or activity that takes you away from the suite for 90 minutes, and tell your partner you want to “get changed for dinner” when you return.

What to wear depends on the month. In winter the temperature can fall well below −20 °C, and a hilltop terrace is exposed. If you are proposing outdoors, wear proper layers, warm boots and a hat, and keep the ring in an inside pocket where it stays warm. The resort rents premium winter clothing, which is worth knowing before you buy anything. Our packing guide covers the layers in detail. If you are inside your suite, dress as you would for a nice dinner at home.

How to Plan It With Us, and the Honest Limits

For a proposal the process is short:

  1. Weeks before: tell us the story, how you met and how you want it to feel. We suggest the fitting option or shape a custom one.
  2. Within a few days: you receive a clear quote with nothing hidden, and we hold the date. Exact timing is fine-tuned together, and we speak to the resort.
  3. The days before: flowers, candles, photographer and the sparkling wine are confirmed.
  4. The hour: we set up while you are on your way and step out of sight. You walk them in, the yes happens, and we quietly pack down.

For a wedding, the path is: tell us about your day, a consultation and estimate, an agreement and deposit, planning together, and then the day itself. Start from our Lapland Wedding Planner page, or write through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings.

The limits, plainly: the resort and restaurant hold up to 60 guests, so a larger wedding belongs elsewhere. Availability must be confirmed with the resort and restaurant. We do not quote resort rates. And because the restaurant is new, we suggest asking early about dates in the first winter.

FAQ

Where is Aurora Hill Resort and how far is it from Rovaniemi?

It is in Ollerovaara, on Rovaniemi’s highest hill, about 10 km or ten minutes from the city centre. The resort offers taxi and car rental, and the airport is around ten minutes from town.

How many guests can a wedding there have?

Up to 60. Restaurant Roavvi seats up to 60 guests, and private use of the whole restaurant is possible. Availability is confirmed with the resort and restaurant, and we handle that conversation.

Can you set up a proposal in our suite?

Yes, with the property’s agreement. Right Where You Are starts from €650 and A Thousand Petals from €700. We style the suite while you are out and we never contact your partner.

When does Restaurant Roavvi open?

It is opening at the end of October 2026 and seats up to 60 guests. Because it is new, ask us or the resort for current dates and menus before you build a plan around it.

When is the best time for the northern lights?

Aurora season runs from late August to April. Nobody can promise a particular night, so allow several evenings. Guests receive the free Northern Lights Alert app.

Do we need to be legally married in Finland to have a ceremony there?

No. Many couples hold a symbolic ceremony and sign at home. A legal civil ceremony needs an examination of impediments, about seven working days and around €60, and should be started three to four months ahead.

Our Honest Final Word

Aurora Hill Resort is a good choice if you want a private cabin on a hill, glass above the bed and the town within ten minutes. It is strongest for in-suite proposals, intimate weddings, vow renewals and celebrations of up to 60 guests, and the new restaurant makes the larger day possible in a way it was not before. Its limits are that the restaurant is new, availability must be confirmed, and a proposal in a suite depends on the property’s agreement. We would rather say so than promise a date we cannot hold.

Since it is our own business, you should weigh our view accordingly. Start with Aurora Hill Resort and a note through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings, and if you only want the proposal, begin with Right Where You Are or A Thousand Petals.
